Chapter 494 Capturing Hansen
494
William Hansen's face was as gloomy as steel. He stopped in front of the huge control desk, looking at the alarms flashing on the screen, his heart filled with anxiety and uneasiness.
The entire base was in chaos. The shouts and explosions outside were clearly audible, but they could not contact the outside world. Even the signal from the submarine cable was interrupted.
"Damn it!" Hansen slammed his fist on the control desk. "When will the signal be connected as soon as possible?"
The technicians worked non-stop, sweating profusely. An engineer wearing gold-rimmed glasses replied tremblingly, "Colonel, it's possible we can't connect. The explosion destroyed the signal terminal outside, and it's impossible to repair it now."
Hansen's eyes were filled with despair and resignation. As the supreme commander of Base 5, he had never imagined facing such a dire situation. He didn't want to take that step until the very last moment.
Just as he was struggling with this, a commotion suddenly broke out outside. Hansen's face turned pale instantly. He knew that the enemy was coming. He quickly grabbed the gun at hand and looked at the door vigilantly.
But it wasn't the enemy that came in, but a panicked American squad. A captain with shoulder straps rushed in with an anxious look on his face. Hansen let down his guard when he saw the newcomer.
"Joseph, why are you here at this time? I need a reasonable explanation." Hansen couldn't help but be alert when asking.
Joseph rebelled? But he didn't look like it.
Joseph had no time to think about what Colonel Hansen meant. He reported anxiously, "Colonel, our weapons depot is gone."
Hansen's face paled. "What do you mean? Did they explode together?" No, that couldn't be possible. The weapons depot and the fuel depot were far apart. They were allocated this way just in case.
There was no way they could have made such a mistake. Joseph didn't know how to explain it, but that was the reality. Everything in their arsenal had disappeared.
"Colonel, it's all gone. There's nothing left. Colonel, retreat now. The current soldiers don't have enough bullets to last more than ten minutes."
Joseph was extremely anxious, but his team was out of bullets. Colonel Hansen's place was the safest in Base 5. Only by staying with Colonel Hansen could they have a chance of survival.
Colonel Hansen calmed down at this point. Since everything was in vain, there was no point in persisting. However, it was definitely impossible to just let it go.
"With all non-essential systems shut down, how long will it take for the self-destruct device to activate?" Hansen asked calmly.
The technician stared at the mechanical counter in front of him, his fingers nervously shifting the gears. "Sir, the backup power supply is unstable. The countdown will take at least ten minutes to start."
Hansen couldn't control his emotions anymore. He slammed his fist on the table, causing the thumbtacks on the map to bounce. "Ten minutes? We can't hold out that long!"
His fingers stroked the buttons. If he really pressed the destroy button, the entire command center would be razed to the ground, all the confidential information would disappear, and he would become a sinner of the United States.
However, if he doesn't press the button, he will also be killed once the base is captured by the enemy.
Hansen placed his finger on the destroy button, his gaze sweeping over everyone. "From now on, no matter how difficult it gets, you must hold on until the self-destruct mechanism activates."
Hansen's fingers exerted slight force as he spoke.
Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai were already prepared when Hansen said his last words. Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai exchanged a glance, a look of determination flashing in their eyes. They absolutely could not let this place be destroyed.
They quietly took out the small grenade Tang Yue had given them and unscrewed the safety cap. With two loud explosions, "Boom! Boom!", a large hole was blown in the ventilation duct. The two men flew down in the blast. Bullets and flying wood chips intertwined in the command room. The ultimate showdown began...
With two loud bangs, Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai flew down from the breach in the ventilation duct like ghosts. Chang Yin's gun was the first to burst into flames, accurately hitting the guard closest to Hansen, while Tang Shengkai, holding a dagger, went straight for another enemy who tried to stop him.
Hansen reacted extremely quickly and rolled sideways at the moment of the explosion, avoiding Chang Yin's first wave of attacks.
He seized the opportunity to rush to the self-destruct control panel, the crimson countdown display flashing wildly before his eyes. "The base can be lost, but it must not fall into Chinese hands!" he roared, his bloodshot hand slamming down on the activation button.
At the critical moment, Chang Yin pounced like a cheetah and kicked Hansen away from the console. The metal floor scraped against Hansen's cheek, sparks flew, and he was so angry that he pulled out his pistol and fired back.
The bullet grazed Chang Yin's shoulder, leaving a charred mark on the wall. Chang Yin rolled on the ground, hiding behind a large vacuum tube computer, and watched the surroundings with vigilance.
"Kill them!" Hansen shouted at the top of his lungs. The remaining guards immediately split into two groups. One group surrounded Chang Yin, while the other blocked Tang Shengkai's way.
Tang Shengkai faced the four guards without fear. The dagger in his hand flashed with a cold light and he engaged in close combat with the enemy.
He was agile, dodging left and right, and occasionally seizing the enemy's flaws to deliver a fatal blow.
As for Chang Yin, he knew that time was running out and he had to get rid of Hansen as soon as possible to prevent him from getting close to the destruction button again.
He took a deep breath, suddenly jumped out from behind the computer, and fired continuously with the gun in his hand. The two guards in front of Hansen fell to the ground. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Chang Yin rushed towards Hansen like an arrow.
Hansen threw away his empty gun, drew a saber from his waist, and engaged in fierce close combat with Chang Yin. Chang Yin didn't want the bullets to damage anything here, so he had been trying to control them. Now Hansen used the knife, which was exactly what he wanted.
The two men exchanged blows, swords flashing and sabers flickering, while Hansen kicked the surrounding equipment all over the place. While fighting with Hansen, Chang Yin kept an eye on the surroundings, and when he saw valuable equipment and documents, he quietly put them into the storage space.
Although Tang Shengkai was brave, the enemy was outnumbered, and he gradually began to feel the strain. A guard seized the opportunity and punched him in the stomach. Tang Shengkai groaned and stumbled back a few steps.
But he quickly steadied himself, a fierce look flashed in his eyes, and he suddenly jumped up, stabbing the dagger straight into the opponent's throat.
However, just as Tang Shengkai dealt with the guard, another guard took the opportunity to rush to the self-destruct device's control panel. Tang Shengkai was extremely anxious and did not even bother to wipe the blood from the corner of his mouth, and rushed towards the control panel.
As he was about to approach the guard, he pounced and knocked the other person to the ground, and both of them rolled on the ground.
During a lull in the battle, Hansen rushed toward the self-destruct device again. Chang Yin's pupils suddenly shrank, and he didn't bother to fight with the guards in front of him. He threw a smoke bomb with his backhand.
Thick white smoke instantly filled the control center. Relying on his memory of the terrain, he shuttled through the smoke and finally knocked Hansen to the ground the moment his fingertips touched the button.
The two men rolled and wrestled on the ground. Hansen pulled out a small pistol from his sleeve, but Chang Yin held his wrist tightly.
Hansen strained to aim his gun at Chang Yin, veins bulging as sweat dripped from his forehead onto the back of Chang Yin's hand. Chang Yin gritted his teeth, gripping the man's neck with his free hand and driving his knee hard into Hansen's abdomen. With a dull thud, the small pistol clanged to the ground.
Almost at the same time, Tang Shengkai eliminated the last guard and hurried to support him. Chang Yin took the opportunity to put the muzzle of the gun to Hansen's head and shouted, "Don't move!" Hansen gasped, his eyes full of unwillingness and despair, and finally collapsed to the ground.
At this time, the control center was in a mess, and the smell of smoke and blood was pungent.
Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai exchanged a glance, each seeing the joy of having survived. But the battle wasn't over yet; they had to quickly eliminate the remaining enemies and ensure the safety of the control center in order to fully control this once impregnable underground fortress.
"Kill me!"
