Chapter 100: Guidance
Chapter 100: Guidance
Fang Yuenian was stunned by the barrage of words and inexplicably thought of his and Cheng Bing's junior high school days.
Li Peixiang started talking non-stop: "Well, once we got to high school, we broke up, and he became ascetic again. Damn, it's like he'd lose a piece of flesh if I smiled. I don't dare say a single out-of-the-box thing for fear of upsetting him. Brother Nian, what can I do?"
"But if he wanted to reconcile with He Linjie, they would have done so long ago."
"He doesn't want to make up, and he doesn't want me either. If he had just looked at me even once, would I have held back for three years?!"
As she spoke, she started shouting, so Fang Yuenian quickly coaxed her, "Oh, okay, okay, I understand. But have you considered that Meng Xiaoyang might not know what you mean?"
Li Peixiang was stunned for two seconds, then roared, "Are you that slow-witted? I've practically been worshipping him!"
I don't know if you've managed to provide for him or not, but it's very possible that Meng Xiaoyang is completely unaware of it, Fang Yuenian thought to herself.
Cheng Bing listened to the whole thing from the side, and finally reached out to take the phone. She said calmly, "Have you ever thought that since you were rejected after your confession, even the level of close care that He Linjie showed you back then will no longer be defined as love in Meng Xiaoyang's heart?"
Fang Yuenian clapped softly: "That's right!"
Li Peixiang took two seconds to react. "You mean... damn it, that idiot He Linjie really ruined me!" he said angrily. "Meng Xiaoyang must be scared of him and won't dare to think nonsense anymore."
Fang Yuenian nodded repeatedly, "That's the idea, understand? If you understand, then take action immediately."
A second later, only the dial tone remained on the other end of the phone.
Fang Yuenian felt both amused and emotional, and concluded, "If they can get together, the two of us will have played a crucial role."
Like a puppy suddenly overjoyed, he clung to Cheng Bing's arm, about to say something more, when Cheng Bing suddenly said, "There are people ahead."
The tone didn't sound like a lie. Fang Yuenian looked up and saw mosquitoes flying around under the dim light in front of her. It seemed like there were indeed two people standing there. Upon closer inspection, she was shocked to see a couple kissing.
Fang Yuenian paused instinctively, her voice as low as if she were cheating on a test: "Holy crap—"
The taller and slightly chubby boy was not only kissing, but one of his hands was even... groping the girl...
Cheng Bing stiffened, and without saying a word, grabbed Fang Yuenian and ran away.
They ran all the way back to the men's dormitory, taking three steps at a time up the stairs. Fang Yuenian's breathing was erratic, and Cheng Bing's was also not very steady. After entering the dormitory and closing the door, the two of them finally stopped and started catching their breath.
Fang Yuenian, still panting, insisted on asking, "Did you see it?"
Cheng Bing glanced at him but didn't answer.
Both of them knew what was going on, and their cheeks flushed.
Fang Yuenian, unable to bear it any longer, was about to step forward when Meng Xiaoyang pushed open the door and entered the room.
Carrying fruit in one hand and an umbrella in the other for rainy days, Meng Xiaoyang paused for a second after entering the room, "What are you doing?"
Fang Yuenian was stunned for a long time, speechless, and then said, "It's nothing, I'm going to take a shower."
"Um..." Meng Xiaoyang was puzzled. "Well, I brought some fruit back."
Cheng Bing nodded politely: "Thank you."
Half an hour later, Fang Yuenian slowly emerged from the bathroom, her hair still wet, her clothes neatly arranged, and her face flushed as if she had just taken a hot shower.
Meng Xiaoyang wasn't there. On the table was a box of bright red cherry tomatoes. Cheng Bing was brushing his teeth on the balcony. When he heard the door open, he turned around and even smiled.
Fang Yuenian put a towel over her head and asked vaguely, "Where is Meng Xiaoyang?"
Answer the phone.
"oh."
The way he dried his hair became increasingly rough.
Cheng Bing couldn't bear to watch any longer, so she got up and went over to take the towel and help.
Fang Yuenian's ears were still flushed, and she tried to make conversation: "Whose call was that?"
Cheng Bing: "Li Peixiang, I guess."
This guy was probably finally about to blurt things out, and Fang Yuenian got excited again, "How long have you been chatting?"
"The phone rang as soon as you went in." Cheng Bing was drying her hair when she suddenly noticed a few strands of towel hair on the back of his neck. Without thinking, she reached out to touch them, but the moment her fingertips touched the skin, Fang Yuenian flinched away. "What are you doing?!"
His reaction was just like that of a respectable young man who had been teased. Cheng Bing's hand was outstretched in mid-air, and his gaze was slightly unfocused.
After her initial shock, Fang Yuenian reached up to touch the back of her neck and said sheepishly, "Is there... something there?"
"It's nothing," Cheng Bing handed him the towel. "It's all done."
Fang Yue Nian looked at Cheng Bing, and couldn't understand why she would cower after being touched.
It must be because they saw something they shouldn't have seen.
When Meng Xiaoyang returned to the dormitory, the two people were lying on their beds, completely silent.
He breathed a sigh of relief and was about to go wash up when Fang Yuenian jumped up from the top bunk, nearly hitting her head on the ceiling. "Wait a minute!"
Cheng Bing also put down her phone.
With both of them staring at him, Meng Xiaoyang was a little confused, wondering if...
Fang Yuenian said, "We understand!"
Meng Xiaoyang's heart skipped a beat. Still fearing it was a ruse, he forced a smile and asked, "What do you know?"
Fang Yuenian became anxious: "What's going on with you? You don't have to tell us either, do you?"
As expected, it had already been announced to the world. Meng Xiaoyang sighed. He was too tired after the day. He dragged his feet to the table and sat down. "Nothing's wrong." Before Fang Yuenian could speak, he added, "Nothing's wrong right now, but I know what I need to know."
Fang Yuenian: "What about He Linjie?"
“I’ve said everything I needed to say,” Meng Xiaoyang sighed again. “To be honest, after confessing to He Linjie in my third year of junior high, I felt like I should have…”
His pause startled Fang Yuenian so much that she almost fell off the bed.
Cheng Bing couldn't sit still either, and straightened up to glare at him.
"Oh," Meng Xiaoyang smiled when he saw their expressions. "Don't be nervous. It was just a period when there wasn't much to talk to, so I got a little stuck on things. Later, I was too busy with exams, so I forgot about it."
This reason is truly both laughable and pathetic.
Fang Yuenian pursed her lips, thought for a moment, and asked, "What are your plans?"
“Nothing long-term, but I plan to move my things to my grandma’s house tomorrow. Li Peixiang will help me book a car, and I estimate I can leave around nine or ten in the morning.”
Fang Yuenian and Cheng Bing exchanged a glance. Although it wasn't perfect in one go, it was still a pretty good result. So they said, "It's settled. We'll help you move it tomorrow."
"What about you two? When are you planning to leave?" Meng Xiaoyang asked.
Fang Yuenian turned her gaze to Cheng Bing, who said, "Tomorrow or the day after is fine, maybe we can go together."
Leaving school together would be perfect, and Fang Yuenian immediately agreed: "Great, great, perfect, let Li Peixiang come over and do the hard work."
Meng Xiaoyang rolled her eyes at him. "Alright, have you explained everything? Can I go take a shower now?"
"Hurry up and go," Fang Yuenian waved her hand, then remembered something, "We need to go to the dormitory manager's place to return the key and settle the campus card tomorrow morning."
Meng Xiaoyang nodded: "Mm."
Cheng Bing was texting on her phone. Lin Guohui had asked her twice in the past two days, saying that she should let him know in advance if she was coming back.
Shortly after the text message was sent, Lin Guohui replied, saying he would come to pick them up at ten o'clock the next day.
So tonight became their last night staying in the dormitory at school.
I stayed for four days after the exam, which is long enough; it's time to leave.
The next day, Li Peixiang arrived very early and brought the three of them hot pancakes and steamed buns for breakfast.
After the group finished all the formalities, they started moving their belongings downstairs. They were probably shocked by the sight of the senior high school students clearing out their dormitories. When the van driver they had arranged arrived, he looked shocked and got out of the van to help move things.
Just as they finished putting Meng Xiaoyang's things into the trunk, Lin Guohui arrived.
Because we had arranged with the security guard in advance that we were picking up graduating students, the car drove directly to the dormitory entrance.
Fang Yuenian was unusually well-behaved when she saw Lin Guohui, which made Li Peixiang quite uncomfortable, and he chuckled quietly several times. Lin Guohui was happy to see these young men and invited them to have lunch, but Li Peixiang's car was booked and he had to decline.
After the three students had moved all their belongings down, the dormitory supervisor came to the door to say goodbye. The three boarding students bowed to thank him in turn, and the four of them said goodbye in pairs. Although they would soon have to come back to check the answers and estimate their scores, as well as provide guidance on filling out college applications after the scores were released, and then pick up their admission notices, there were still many things to do and the meetings would never end, but it was still time to say goodbye.
With adults around, the boys all behaved themselves. Meng Xiaoyang's eyes were a little red. Li Peixiang put his arm around his shoulder and said with a smile that they should come for hot pot next time.
Fang Yuenian didn't dare to put his arm around Cheng Bing's shoulder, even though he knew it wouldn't make Lin Guohui think too much. He restrained himself and went over to whisper to the two of them for a while before Meng Xiaoyang pushed him and said, "Let's go."
And so, we parted ways.
In fact, from the moment the exam was over, their entire high school life was over, like sand slipping through their fingers, impossible to hold onto.
They postponed their parting for a while with revelry and tedious wrap-up work. Their unrestrained behavior was understood by everyone. The last photo of the summer campus was enough.
On the way back, Lin Guohui asked the two boys: How did the exam go? Did you drink at the party? Did you thank your teachers?
All the other questions were easy to answer, but when it came to alcohol, Fang Yuenian said she hadn't drunk any. Lin Guohui clearly didn't believe her: "I've seen high school seniors stay up all night for days on end, and you two don't even drink? Sigh, this is terrible, you've neglected your studies."
Fang Yuenian laughed heartily, then suddenly remembered that three years ago, after the middle school entrance exam, the person who came to pick him up was also Lin Guohui, and the person beside him was naturally Cheng Bing.
The six years of his middle school years were like colorful film silhouettes. For the first time, he felt that time flies by and waits for no one. He felt inexplicably sad and boldly hooked his finger with Cheng Bing's in the back seat.
The van traveled smoothly all the way to Shuibiwei. After crossing the dam, the scenery outside the window became both familiar and unfamiliar.
When Fang Yuenian went home last time, he jokingly told Cheng Bing, "When we come back next time, we'll be soon-to-be college students." Now, looking at the metasequoia trees lining the road, Cheng Bing asked him, "Do you get carsick?"
"I'm not dizzy."
I no longer experience any motion sickness symptoms, which is one of the most heartening changes from my three years of high school.
Lin Guohui said, "You weren't used to it when you were little, but you'll get used to it after sitting in it a lot. When you go to university in the future, you'll be able to travel by train and plane all over the place without any problems."
Fang Yuenian agreed; he was already looking forward to university, just two hours after leaving high school. (Author's note:)
