Chapter 72: The Place That Sells DVDs
The days passed uneventfully, and soon the school's patriotic song competition was held as scheduled.
Class 1 was quite simple, wearing their school uniforms for the competition, but their overall performance was excellent. Their final three-part chorus performance amazed the judges, making them the first class to go on stage and setting a great precedent.
Fang Yuenian was blinded by the lights on stage and couldn't even make eye contact with Cheng Bing.
However, Cheng Bing stared at him intently throughout the entire song from the audience.
During the long wait between Class 2 and Class 17, Fang Yuenian was distracted and didn't even pay close attention to the performances of the key competitor classes. When Class 18 finally came on stage, they had indeed ordered a complete set of performance costumes. The student in charge of the performance was even wearing a gorgeous tuxedo, which made everyone gasp in amazement as soon as they appeared.
Fang Yuenian originally wanted to listen to Class 18 sing, but his attention was successfully diverted, and he kept staring at Cheng Bing, who was wearing a little dress. Li Peixiang had to nudge him several times to bring him back to his senses.
"Hey, hey, holy crap, this is unfair! Class 18 is definitely going to be number one. Look, the teachers taking pictures are going crazy."
"Huh?" Fang Yuenian was confused. "Originally, you sang quite well."
"Sigh, our class lost because of the costumes and props. It's all the homeroom teacher's fault for not spending money. Oh well, friendship first, competition second." Li Peixiang accepted it quickly.
"Brother Cheng in his little suit is really..." Fang Yue Nian muttered to herself, "He didn't even let anyone know."
However, once he got back to his dorm that night, he immediately messaged Cheng Bing: "You looked absolutely stunning today! You're the most handsome guy in the school!"
Cheng Bing replied shortly after: "Mm".
"No, keep the dress safe and wear it again when you have the chance. I want to take a picture and send it to Sister Jun and Sister Xiaoxiao."
"good."
After the patriotic song competition, the only fun that Class 18 had came to an end.
There's no way around it; their homeroom teacher is too terrifying. It makes them feel like they're in deep trouble once they enter the classroom. They even have to sign in for self-study sessions on weekends.
The midterm exams were scheduled for Thursday and Friday, so Fang Yuenian made a special appointment with Cheng Bing to walk around the school on the Sunday night before.
The school has many winding paths and excellent greenery. He even bought milk tea on purpose—milk tea is a recently popular drink that many young couples love to drink. When he bought it, the shopkeeper quietly asked if it was for a girl, which made him repeatedly say no.
Cheng Bing searched for him for a long time before finally finding him in the gaps between a row of oleander trees outside the small volleyball court.
"Brother Cheng!" he said, as if he were from an undercover operation, "I'm here."
Cheng Bing walked over and found the place to be exceptionally secluded, and thought the person was a little genius.
"Here you go," Fang Yuenian offered the milk tea, "Try it and see."
Cheng Bing took it, inserted the straw, took a sip, and found it to be incredibly sweet.
"How is it? Is it too sweet? I asked the owner to put less sugar in it, but he said that girls all like sweet drinks."
Cheng Bing's eyebrows twitched. "A girl?"
Fang Yuenian laughed and quickly said, "He thought I bought it as a gift for a girl, and said he's seen plenty of girls like me."
Cheng Bing glanced at the cup in his hand, which he had just inserted the straw into but hadn't drunk from yet. Fang Yuenian then said, "Would you like to try mine?"
"Mmm." Cheng Bing took a sip from his hand, and it was still incredibly sweet. "Too sweet," he commented.
Fang Yuenian: "Really?"
Although they both said the milk tea was too sweet, they still drank it anyway, chatting casually as they drank.
For Fang Yuenian, this midterm exam was particularly important, as it concerned Cheng Bing's deskmate. Fang Yuenian asked, "How is Zhang Qing doing?"
Cheng Bing said, "It seems okay, but we haven't talked much. We occasionally chat about homework."
“My God, I now actually wish she would continue to be number one,” Fang Yuenian sighed. “It’s so frustrating.”
"That's her own business. She's already very strong, but others are improving too. I can't take responsibility for her," Cheng Bing said in a low voice.
Fang Yuenian hummed in agreement but didn't say anything.
He had a lot to say; before today, he and Cheng Bing hadn't seen each other for almost a week.
However, once he actually sat there, he didn't have anything he wanted to say, and it seemed like he could just sit there doing nothing.
It would be even better if Cheng Bing could take the initiative to say something.
But he didn't.
Cheng Bing had to return to her dorm before finishing her milk tea. On the phone, her dorm supervisor, acting on orders from the class teacher, was instructed to ensure everyone went to bed early every night during exam week.
Fang Yuenian said, "When I go back and tell Meng Xiaoyang about this, he will have another reason to say that he is lucky not to be in the top class."
Cheng Bing said, "It doesn't seem right for you to keep reminding him of this."
Fang Yuenian realized what he meant when he said that, "Oh right, then I won't mention it."
Midterms are a major exam, and in the days leading up to them, everyone looked serious, as if facing a formidable enemy.
The most relaxed one should be Meng Xiaoyang. Mainly because he was always very calm. He was the same during exam week as at other times and did not do any last-minute cramming. That's why he seemed to handle things with ease. Although Fang Yuenian was used to Cheng Bing's composure, she still admired him a little.
However painful the process may be, it will eventually pass, and the night after the exam will immediately become a happy night.
The exams are over, but the results haven't come out yet. If not now, when? Especially on Friday.
Before they could even find their own fun, their homeroom teacher generously offered to show a movie. This quickly drew in about half of the students from the class, which originally only had boarding students and a few day students. Li Peixiang, who had already gone home, rushed over upon hearing the news, bringing a bag of snacks with him. He was truly unmatched in creating a lively atmosphere.
Fang Yuenian pulled Meng Xiaoyang to sit with them and had just asked him the answers to two multiple-choice questions when Li Peixiang interrupted him: "What are you two doing? The homeroom teacher has already shown us a movie to de-stress, and you're still comparing answers?"
The homeroom teacher was struggling to set up the multimedia equipment and told everyone to keep a low profile and not make a scene. Everyone laughed and agreed, praising the teacher as "awesome."
Li Peixiang then asked, "What movie are we watching today?"
Fang Yuenian said the name of that famous movie and asked, "Have you seen it?"
“No, but I’ve heard of it,” Li Peixiang tore open a bag of potato chips and handed it to Meng Xiaoyang. “Have you seen it?”
Meng Xiaoyang waved his hand to indicate that he didn't want to eat, "I've seen it, it's very touching."
Li Peixiang's eyes looked a little strange. "Oh."
"I'll eat it," Fang Yuenian snatched the potato chips, then felt a little tempted. "What do you guys think? Can I secretly call Cheng Bing over later? Anyway, the lights are all off now, so no one will see us."
"It's not a big deal to see him, is it? Any teacher would like a student like Cheng, the school heartthrob. By the way, I wonder if he can get into the top five this time? I heard that some people are betting on it." Li Peixiang started to exude the charm of the king of gossip again, "They said they bet a week's worth of breakfasts."
Fang Yuenian was speechless: "Who would be so bored as to gamble with someone else's grades?"
"Mind your own business," Li Peixiang scoffed. "Just a bored person."
Meng Xiaoyang coughed. "Alright, the movie is about to start."
Fang Yuenian hurriedly said, "Did you bring your phone? I'll give it to Cheng... Oh no, he definitely didn't bring his phone. Never mind, I'll go downstairs and call him."
“Are you really going?” Li Peixiang said. “I thought you were joking. Okay, hurry up and go. The opening credits will probably be a minute or two long. Run fast.”
"OK!" Fang Yuenian quietly got up, crouched down, and ran out.
I ran down to the first floor, went around to the outside of their corridor, and used the three large ironwood plants that their class kept as cover to quietly sneak to the back door.
As is customary, self-study is not mandatory on the night after the exam. Even in the top classes, there weren't many people there tonight. Fang Yuenian looked around but couldn't find Cheng Bing.
That's really strange. I didn't hear him mention any other plans during lunch this afternoon. Could he be in his dorm?
—Cheng Bing really wasn't in the dorm.
Today is their dorm leader's birthday. He only found out after dinner that the dorm leader's parents had sent over a cake for the kids to eat together. But there were only three people in the dorm, so the atmosphere wasn't quite right. The dorm leader then invited three other boys from the class to the boys' dorm, and the group secretly lit candles together.
When boys get together, they become less refined. Besides, exams have just ended, and it's a rare time to relax. After noisily eating cake, one of the boys suggested, "Shall we go out for a walk?"
The oldest student in the dorm was happy and excitedly nodded, "Okay? Where to? The internet cafe?"
The boy said, "That's boring. I know a store that sells DVDs. Want to go?"
The atmosphere immediately became awkward after those words were spoken.
