Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Person Behind It
Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Person Behind It
Having survived a brush with death, Old Master Gu lost interest in everything.
His family could only comfort him and tell him to rest and recover.
It's been almost three years in the blink of an eye.
Grandpa Gu also began a new life, relearning and joining the research group.
Everything is moving in a positive direction.
Until that day, a rural woman came to visit with a two- or three-year-old child.
She said she was Mr. Gu's wife.
The woman was dark-skinned, and her face looked tired.
Upon seeing this woman, Old Master Gu immediately ordered her to be driven away.
A woman was crying and making a scene at the door with her child.
Then Old Master Gu appeared and said that he no longer had a wife.
He threw the divorce papers in front of the woman.
It turns out that back then, when the woman saw that Old Master Gu was beyond saving, she forced him to sign the divorce papers and even got the brigade leaders to witness it.
The other members of the group offered a few words of advice.
If we divorce now, wouldn't that be sending Old Master Gu to his death?
The woman refused to agree and insisted on a divorce. In the end, Mr. Gu, despite his physical condition, personally signed the papers.
But fate had other plans, and Old Master Gu was alive and well.
What Grandpa Gu didn't know was that for a long time after he left, everyone in the village said that women were jinxes, and that Grandpa Gu had been unlucky ever since he married her.
Now that they're divorced, Grandpa Gu is actually doing better; he's even become more capable and can be seen on television.
In the eyes of the villagers, anyone who can appear on television is an exceptionally capable person.
In comparison, the reputation of women being jinxes is well-deserved.
Because of the woman's family background, people didn't dare to say it to her face, but they talked about her a lot behind her back.
The woman's later husband died unexpectedly, and her mother-in-law was a tormenting person.
Seeing that Old Master Gu was doing well, the woman came looking for him, hoping to gain some benefits.
Old Master Gu showed her no mercy, just like back then, and threw the divorce papers in front of her.
They forced the person onto the train, along with the child who was with them.
Those around who knew about this said that the old man was heartless, abandoning his wife and even his children.
Some say that Master Gu did the right thing; you have to be tough on these kinds of people, otherwise they'll stick to you before you know it.
In short, opinions vary widely.
I never saw that woman and that child again.
If that child were alive, he would be about the same age as them. If he had a son, he would be about the same age as Xia Chenggan and the others.
Zhou Ran, who had eaten a handful of melon seeds, asked curiously.
"So what exactly happened? The old man doesn't want the children anymore, and he doesn't want the Gu family either?"
"Oh, I heard that the child isn't the old man's. He didn't even touch that woman. Who knows whose child it is?"
"Awesome."
Master Gu is a ruthless man. He knows exactly how to use someone. He wanted to take advantage of the marriage and the woman's status. He really did take advantage of her.
"Have someone check where they're from."
"Okay, it's been a long time, so it might be difficult to investigate."
"Hmm, do you have a topographical map of the mountain where the Gu family's old house is located? I need a very detailed one."
Zhou Ran searched online and found that because it was private property, the map only roughly marked the area.
Zhou Ran watched as the sour grapes of resentment towards the rich welled up inside her.
"You suspect those people are hiding in the mountains? That's impossible."
That place has dense forests and good ecological protection. There are no wild beasts there, but there are also wild animals that hide deep inside. The Gu family also regularly cleans it up. How could it be hiding there?
"I don't know, I suspect it, send it to me."
These were minor matters for Xiahou Nan, and he quickly sent the map over.
Zhou Ran frowned as she carefully examined the map data.
Xia Chengping curiously leaned closer, wanting to see what he was looking at.
Zhou Ran pushed Xia Chengping's head away, disgusted by his dog-like curiosity.
Xia Chengping did see the map; it was a 3D mountain map.
While Xia Chengping and the others were getting bored, Zhou Ran put the map away.
"Let's go, we'll get some weapons from your father and go find your brother. Now it's time to switch sides."
"Awooo! Let's get that bastard!"
They quickly got into the car to find Xiahou Nan.
An unfamiliar environment, an unfamiliar place.
Xia Chenggan woke up from his coma, his mind still a little groggy.
He was stunned for a moment before he remembered what had happened.
Oh, he was kidnapped.
You woke up earlier than expected.
Upon hearing the sound, Xia Chenggan looked in the direction from which it came and saw a large loudspeaker on the corner wall.
The sound coming from the speaker appears to have been processed and is somewhat distorted.
Xia Chenggan was certain that it wasn't a voice he was familiar with.
"What do you want from me?"
Without asking why it was him, without asking what would happen to him, Xia Chenggan asked him what he wanted.
"Haha, interesting, interesting, Young Master Xia, you truly are someone else's child, you are indeed very smart."
"You'd better make your demands quickly, or you might miss your chance."
Xia Chenggan believed that his family would find him soon.
“Your family is too busy taking care of themselves right now to come and save you. We have plenty of time to have a good chat.”
The voice coming from the loudspeaker was confident.
"Oh, so what do you want to talk about?"
Villains die from talking too much. Since he wants to talk more, I don't mind listening.
"Your life is worth a lot!"
"Yes, I have assets worth tens of billions, not counting other miscellaneous money. Of course I'm very valuable."
Xia Chenggan tried to move his hands and feet, but they were all tied up and he couldn't break free. He could only sit in the chair in one position.
"Haha, it seems they underestimated your price. Luckily it was me who came. If it were someone else, they would have let you go for the money."
"Yes, probably. After all, money can solve 99% of problems. If you have enough money, you can even buy your life."
Xia Chenggan readily admitted that he had always thought so.
"Heh, your money can't buy your life now."
"Really? I don't believe it. Maybe you're not rich enough. When you're as rich as me, you'll know."
The person on the loudspeaker was very angry at Xia Chenggan's arrogant attitude. "So what if you're rich?"
Now he's caught them, hasn't he? They're locked up like dogs, unable to move!
Even as she tried to comfort herself, the breath coming from the loudspeaker seemed heavier.
Reason held back the outburst.
"If you weren't after my money, why would you bring me here? You're just jealous of what I have. What I have so easily is something you could never obtain even if you struggled your whole life and used every means possible."
Xia Chenggan added fuel to the fire.
Sure enough, as soon as he finished speaking, a sharp horn blared, and the other party angrily smashed the horn.
Xia Chenggan raised an eyebrow; she was dumber than he had imagined, but smarter than most people.
After he cried out, the area where he was stood returned to calm.
Xia Chenggan stretched his neck, his hands also busy, fumbling for the small buttons on his cuffs.
It's specially made; it has a small blade inside. With a clever twist, it can be used as a small knife, a backup plan for crucial moments.
The knife popped out, its blade, only half the size of a fingernail, was incredibly sharp.
He carefully cut the rope binding his hands, but the rope didn't move.
He wanted to understand the surrounding situation before taking any action.
If he escapes one danger only to fall into another, he will be in grave danger.
The monitoring room was a complete mess.
A middle-aged man was slumped in a chair, and everything around him was probably his doing.
One of his men knocked on the door and only entered after receiving permission.
"What's wrong?"
The middle-aged man asked in a harsh tone.
"The people we went to deal with Xia Chengping have disappeared."
"What do you mean by missing? We need to see them alive or dead."
Upon hearing his subordinate's words, the middle-aged man jumped up from his chair.
He was furious. If he hadn't smashed everything around him, he would have given his men a good beating right there and then.
"They've lost contact. The people we sent out again have also lost contact."
"Who else could be there besides Xia Chengping?"
The sudden disappearance of his subordinate gave the middle-aged man a bad feeling.
"According to our information, the person living inside is Zhou Ran, the good-for-nothing young master of the Zhou family who was replaced."
"Zhou Ran? The son Zhao Feng switched?"
The middle-aged man fell into thought. Zhou Ran's son was crazy enough to keep Xia Chenggan occupied, and he had helped him a lot before.
This kid has been acting increasingly erratically lately; I wonder what he's done this time.
"yes."
Where is Zhao Feng?
"At the company."
“Call him and tell him to go find his son, by any means necessary, to separate him from the Xia family, and not let him ruin things.”
The middle-aged man paced back and forth, his mind constantly replaying the plans and their current implementation.
"No, how could Xia Chenggan be so honest? Send someone over to fix the surveillance cameras and guard the entrance, not allowing anyone to enter or leave."
"yes."
Xia Chenggan is too clever to be easily controlled, and even now that he has been arrested, it doesn't put anyone at ease.
Fortunately, he not only had Xia Chenggan under his control, but also Xia Chengan, who was far inferior to his brother.
The middle-aged man entered another room, where Xia Cheng'an was lying on the bed, still unconscious.
"I have high hopes for him."
"yes."
The middle-aged man left without noticing that Xia Cheng'an's eyelashes twitched slightly in the room.
Xia Cheng'an had already woken up.
The hand against the wall pressed down hard on the wrist until it felt something break, then the hand relaxed.
Unbeknownst to these middle-aged men, he was still on the phone, checking on the situation in other places, trying to cause more trouble for the Xia family.
In the mountains, Gu Tingxiao pulled Shen Shuyun to lean against a large, moss-covered rock.
Hearing the approaching footsteps, they covered their mouths and noses, trying not to let their breathing reveal their location.
The footsteps grew louder, and so did the heartbeat.
Gu Tingxiao knew this was caused by excessive nervousness; he could hear his own heartbeat.
Shen Shuyun's eyes widened, fear evident in them. What kind of danger had she gotten herself into?
Finding a rich husband isn't that a death sentence!
Gu Tingxiao had no time to comfort Shen Shuyun; he held her down tightly to prevent her from showing herself and being discovered.
"Not here."
"Damn, how can this kid run so fast?"
"Once I catch him, I'll break his legs first, then let him run away."
"Have they found it over there?"
"No."
"Keep searching!"
"If we can't find it today, we can't go back!"
The complaints gradually faded away.
Gu Tingxiao relaxed; they had escaped a disaster. He released his hand that was pressing down on Shen Shuyun.
Shen Shuyun opened her eyes wide in horror and stared blankly behind him.
Gu Tingxiao turned around stiffly, and upon seeing what it was, his eyes widened in equal terror. Author's Note: Thank you to my mentor 9492239 (9492239) for your support! For more exciting content, please leave a message for this book on Liancheng Reading.
