Chapter 56

Chapter 56

Let them leave

The night was dark and desolate.

Wealthy people own more than one property, so the occupancy rate in the villa area is not high. In addition, the extensive greenery blocks out the light, making the streetlights much dimmer than those on the street at night.

As Jiang Fengyi got out of the car, a cold wind hit her face.

Xu took off his thin coat and draped it over Jiang Fengyi to protect her from the chill that was coming from all directions.

She immediately went to the property manager to delete the registration information that Jiang Xuan had processed for the Zhao family, so that no one from the Zhao family would have the opportunity to enter her house in the future.

He then walked towards his home with his bodyguards and property staff.

"Sister, Jiang Fengyi might not show up all night, right? Perhaps we should..."

Zhao Rufei, however, was certain: "She will definitely show up!"

Footsteps sounded from behind.

The two Zhao sisters turned around at the same time, and the person they had just been talking about appeared in front of them.

Zhao Rufei quickly had the housekeeper bring forward the apology gifts and said to Jiang Fengyi, "We've come to apologize to you. Whether you forgive us or not, we accept it."

"I hope you will accept these gifts as a token of my apology."

Jiang Fengyi glanced at her indifferently and then said to the property staff behind her, "Tell them to leave and not to appear at my door again."

Property staff immediately stepped forward to separate the Zhao family members from Jiang Fengyi.

"Miss Zhao, please don't make things difficult for us."

Zhao Rufei's smile froze on her face.

"You...you..."

This was the first time in her life that she had suffered such blatant humiliation in front of so many people, and she was so angry that she couldn't speak for a moment.

Zhao Ruxuan stepped forward, blocking her way, ignoring the staff's attempts to leave, and began to hurl insults at Jiang Fengyi.

"You shameless Jiang Fengyi! My sister came to apologize out of kindness, and you humiliate her like this! Don't push your luck!"

"Sister, let's go. Who would want to stay in this awful place like this? We're exposed to the cold wind and have to put up with this suffocating atmosphere!"

Jiang Fengyi completely ignored the two of them, and only turned her head to instruct the property management behind her: "Don't let just anyone in from now on."

Zhao Rufei's smile faded, and when she spoke again, her voice was icy: "Jiang Fengyi, was it necessary to be so ruthless?"

"It's because you didn't leave yourselves a way out."

"Sister, why waste words with someone like this? Let's go!"

Hearing this, Xu was displeased: "What do you mean by 'this kind of person'? Explain yourself! It's clearly your Zhao family who have been clinging to her and sucking her dry."

"She simply rejected you, and you've slandered her as if she left no room for negotiation, as if she suffered some great injustice. She's the victim!"

When Zhao Ruxuan saw Xu jump out, she immediately turned her anger on her.

"I don't know what method you used to trick Jiang Fengyi into marrying you. You just got lucky. What right do you have to talk about us? Aren't you also clinging to Jiang Fengyi?"

"She's my wife, of course I want to be inseparable from her!"

Zhao Ruxuan rolled her eyes at her: "Stop pretending to be a loving couple in front of me. You're just an excuse Jiang Fengyi uses to reject my sister!"

Jiang Fengyi's heart tightened. Her mother had indeed arranged a blind date for her with Zhao Rufei. Although she didn't go because she was busy with work, she wondered if Xu would feel resentful after finding out.

She glanced at the person next to her with concern.

Neither of them spoke. Zhao Ruxuan thought she had hit Xu Que's sore spot, and her face became even more smug.

"What? Jiang Fengyi didn't tell you that both of your elders have been trying to match her up with my sister? It seems your relationship isn't that great."

Xu sneered, "You really know how to flatter your sister. From the moment Jiang Fengyi appeared until now, has she even glanced at your sister?"

"I just feel sorry for Jiang Fengyi. If it weren't for her mother, how could she have gotten involved with people like you with such terrible personalities?"

"Who are you calling a bad person!"

Zhao Ruxuan was so angry that she wanted to rush forward, but Zhao Rufei held her back tightly.

"We came here today to apologize in good faith. Since you are unwilling to accept it, then we have nothing more to say."

After saying that, she pulled the furious Zhao Rufei into the car and drove away.

After the person left,

Xu Que, who had been standing in front of Jiang Fengyi, then walked into the house with her side by side.

Jiang Xuan was not there; the large mansion was only occupied by the butler and servants. Jiang Fengyi was arranging matters with the butler, while Xu, feeling bored, wandered around.

The old house only bears traces of Jiang Xuan's residence; there's very little trace of Jiang Fengyi's life there. The guest room she stayed in felt more like a temporary lodging in a hotel, cold and devoid of any warmth or homely comfort.

Xu returned to Jiang Fengyi's side, just as the other person stopped talking.

"Everything has been arranged, let's go back."

The vehicle drove out of the villa area, escaping the thick darkness of night.

The distant neon lights and streetlights intertwined and flickered, pulling them back into the bright world.

Xu gripped the steering wheel, having only eaten about 70-80% full for dinner. After all that commotion, she felt that the food in her stomach had been mostly digested.

Are you hungry...?

"Gurgle~"

The sudden sound gave her an answer.

Jiang Fengyi awkwardly pressed her hand to her stomach. She had been forced to leave halfway through dinner and had been busy until now, and her stomach was starting to protest.

She prayed, but Xu in the driver's seat did not hear her.

The carriage fell silent for a moment. Xu listened intently, but Jiang Fengyi's stomach made no further sound, as if the sound just now was merely his imagination.

She asked, "Would you like to get something to eat?"

Jiang Fengyi hummed in agreement and said somewhat embarrassedly, "I am a little hungry."

She glanced at the time: "But it's so late, are there still any shops open?"

Xu Que's laughter entered her ears, sending shivers down her spine like ants crawling on them.

"That's exactly when the best food is available!"

He turned the steering wheel and headed towards the place with the most delicious food.

After getting off the bus,

Xu then led Jiang Fengyi to the bustling night market.

This place is enveloped in the aroma of various foods.

Passersby thronged the area, some stopping in front of the stalls, their conversations, calls to customers, and the sounds of food being stirred in pots filling the air.

The sizzling sound of fresh meat being grilled over charcoal, mixed with the aroma of cumin, wafted into Jiang Fengyi's nostrils, attracting her to stop.

Xu, who was standing right next to her, also stopped in front of the barbecue stall at the same time.

Would you like this?

Upon seeing customers arrive, the shop owner enthusiastically shouted, "My red willow branch lamb skewers are absolutely amazing! Every customer who's tried them raves about them!"

"Red willow branch lamb skewers?"

Seeing that Jiang Fengyi was interested, Xu said directly, "Then let's first serve us a few skewers of the red willow branch lamb skewers that you've been praising so much."

"Alright, would you two like anything else to eat?"

Xu then picked out other meat skewers and vegetables and handed them to the staff to grill together.

She instructed the owner, "Just make it mildly spicy."

Worried that Jiang Fengyi wouldn't be used to barbecue skewers, she also ordered a clay pot porridge and prepared some cooling herbal tea for her.

After finding a seat, Jiang Fengyi smelled the aroma of meat wafting from the next table. Her stomach, which had only been slightly hungry, was now churning wildly, constantly urging her to eat something.

Just as she was eagerly waiting, their kebabs were finally served.

Thick, meaty pieces of mutton are skewered on thick red willow branches, still sizzling and dripping with oil after being removed from the blazing fire. Spices are evenly sprinkled on top, and the aroma of the meat spreads powerfully in all directions.

"It smells so good!"

Jiang Fengyi picked up a skewer and bit off the meaty piece at the very top of the red willow branch.

"It's so hot."

The mutton was stir-fried on her tongue, mixing more thoroughly with the spices. Jiang Fengyi carefully chewed while sucking air into her mouth.

The unique fragrance of red willow branches completely eliminates the mutton's gamey smell. As the meat is constantly turned and roasted, this fragrance permeates the meat, greatly enriching its flavor.

"tasty!"

Before she could even swallow the mutton in her mouth, Jiang Fengyi couldn't help but praise it.

You should try some too!

The lamb skewers were freshly grilled, and even the mildly spicy flavor was a bit too spicy for Jiang Fengyi. She tilted her head back and gulped down a large mouthful of ice water to relieve the spiciness in her mouth.

Not long after,

The skewers in front of them were now just bare sticks, the food on them completely eaten up.

"I'm so full."

Xu leaned back in his chair, sipping his cold tea intermittently.

"This tea is very refreshing; would you like to try some?"

She handed over the herbal tea she was holding.

Jiang Fengyi leaned forward, got closer to Xu Que, put the straw in her mouth, and took a small sip.

"It has a herbal medicine smell."

She stood up and reached out her hand to Xu.

"I'm a little too full from eating too much, I'll go for a walk to digest."

The other person placed their hand on her mouth as soon as she opened it.

The two walked out of the night market hand in hand.

It was already late at night, but the place was still bustling with activity.

The noise felt like a continuation of the daytime, or perhaps it was only at this time that one could completely let go of the daytime work and freely control their own time.

After walking along the road for several tens of minutes, away from the night market, the noise gradually faded away, and the tranquility of the late night was finally revealed to them.

Once on the bus,

Once the car door was closed, the noise was completely shut out.

Jiang Fengyi: "It's suddenly become so quiet, I'm not used to it yet."

Xu pressed the button, and soothing instrumental music flowed quietly through the carriage.

"It's not quiet anymore."

After eating her fill, Jiang Fengyi listened to soft music, her eyelids slowly closing together. Feeling sleepy, she simply closed her eyes for a short rest.

The vehicle was traveling at a steady speed on the road home, and just as it was about to arrive, it suddenly braked sharply and stopped at the side of the road.

"What’s wrong with you?"

Xu quickly turned off the music and turned around to check on Jiang Fengyi's condition.

Where does it hurt?

She was clutching her stomach, the intense pain causing a fine layer of sweat to appear on her forehead, and her body was burning up.

"My stomach feels a little uncomfortable, and I feel a bit nauseous."

"I'll take you to see a doctor!"

Xu started the car again, this time changing his destination from home to the hospital.

She carried Jiang Fengyi directly to the emergency department, registered, and the on-duty doctor examined her and informed her.

"Acute gastroenteritis, let's start with an IV drip."

After receiving intravenous fluids for half an hour, Jiang Fengyi recovered.

She looked up at Xu Que, who was so nervous that he was circling in front of her, and called out to her.

"What's wrong?" Xu immediately knelt down in front of her, asking with a worried expression, "Is there anything else that's bothering you?"

"I'm fine now. I just wanted you to sit down and rest for a while."

Xu looked remorseful and said regretfully, "It's all my fault for taking you to eat barbecue. If we hadn't gone, you wouldn't have had to suffer from stomach pain caused by gastroenteritis."

Jiang Fengyi comforted her, saying, "It's just that I ate something bad. Besides, I only ate this barbecue because I was hungry."

"The food from that restaurant was fine, and you ate it just the same way and you're perfectly healthy, aren't you?"

"It's because I eat too many different kinds of food, both spicy and cold, and my stomach can't handle the alternation between hot and cold."

As the two were talking, the sound of footsteps approached them.

"Jiang Fengyi?"

The visitor looked delighted.

"It really is you!"
