Chapter 31

Chapter 31

I will keep an eye on you

Afternoon.

The sky was clear and cloudless.

A cool breeze drifted in through the slightly ajar window of the ward, brushing against Jiang Fengyi's heart and stirring up ripples.

The wind also ruffled the stray hairs on Xu Que's forehead. She tilted her head slightly, holding her breath as she stared intently at Jiang Fengyi, seeking an answer.

Jiang Fengyi put down the porridge in her hand and replied softly in return.

"Isn't it obvious?"

Upon hearing Jiang Fengyi's admission, Xu felt as if fireworks had exploded in his heart. His heart briefly lost control, its rhythm erratic, and all he could hear was the pounding of his own heart.

Jiang Fengyi's voice did not stop.

“I thought you had noticed it a long time ago.” She looked back at Xu Que. “Strictly speaking, it’s not entirely because of you; I also have my own reasons.”

"Over the years, she has repeatedly exhausted my expectations of maternal love."

Xu took Jiang Fengyi's hand, which was resting on the edge of the bed, and quietly conveyed warmth.

"You are very good."

Xu, however, did not want to see any sadness in Jiang Fengyi's beautiful eyes.

"It's because she doesn't know how to cherish you."

"You are beautiful, outstanding, smart, and kind... There are countless people who want to walk alongside you. Don't let one person's indifference make you completely deny yourself."

She grasped the other person's hand and said sincerely.

"At least in my eyes, you are the best."

"Without exception."

Xu chose to return to work on the first day after being discharged from the hospital.

Jiang Fengyi didn't quite agree: "Why not rest at home for a few more days?"

"I'm so bored staying at home all day, I'm about to grow mushrooms on my head." Xu changed her clothes and went out with Jiang Fengyi. "I'm all alone at home, it's so lonely."

Actually, Xu rarely saw Jiang Fengyi because he stayed at home for long periods of time. If he wanted to see Jiang Fengyi at the company, he only needed to walk into her office.

"Besides, the residual medication in my body was metabolized completely before I was even discharged from the hospital, so you don't need to worry about me."

The two rode in the same car to the company. When they were still a block away from the company, Xu quickly called the driver to stop.

"Stop here for a moment, I'll get off here, so my colleagues won't see you and me getting off in the same car."

Although she regretted choosing to hide their relationship at the company, she would keep her promise and fulfill it unless the other party changed his mind.

Jiang Fengyi lifted her eyelids to glance at her, her eyes revealing no emotion.

"what ever."

Xu got out of the car as he wished, and the car continued to move forward.

She followed behind the car, striding longingly towards it.

When she arrived at the company, Xu's nose was covered in a thin layer of sweat. She thought to herself, "I'll just treat this as morning exercise. Sharing a car with Jiang Fengyi will give me at least fifteen more minutes of time together every day."

Arriving on the twenty-second floor,

Having not seen Xu Que for a few days, He Shuyi took the initiative to ask with concern, "I heard you took sick leave these past few days. Have you recovered yet?"

"If you feel unwell, never try to tough it out."

Xu vaguely replied, "I'm almost fully recovered."

"It's gotten colder these past few days, and people with weakened immune systems are more prone to illness. You've just recovered, so try to avoid going out in the wind," He Shuyi reminded her before turning to talk about other things.

"I just discovered something very coincidental."

Xu knew gossip had arrived, so he quickly leaned closer and asked, "What is it?"

“During the days you took leave, President Jiang rarely appeared at the company. He would show up briefly and then disappear again.”

"And today you and President Jiang arrived at the company one after the other," she winked at Xu and joked, "Anyone who didn't know better would think you and President Jiang live in the same neighborhood and agreed to leave together this morning."

Xu chuckled dryly, "Ha, ha, ha, what a coincidence."

"How could a lowly employee like me have the money to live in the same neighborhood as President Jiang? You think too highly of me."

He Shuyi nodded: "You're right."

But logic aside, these two are just so adorable!

Xu couldn't understand the light in He Shuyi's eyes, but she saw the words 'I will keep an eye on you two' on her face.

Xu quickly made an excuse that he needed to deal with work, in order to avoid the interrogation of the other party's eyes.

Because of He Shuyi, Xu didn't dare to go into Jiang Fengyi's office all morning, for fear that she would find out another coincidence.

As evening approached,

Jiang Fengyi had already suspected that Xu Que was subtly rejecting her because he had offered to get off the bus that morning, and this incident only confirmed that suspicion.

For an entire day, Xu did not enter or leave her office even once.

In the past, she would go in and out at least a dozen times a day.

It seems that Xu started to distance herself from her after she revealed her feelings in the hospital; this is the only reason Jiang Fengyi can think of.

But didn't she say that she was the best person in her eyes?

It could also be a subordinate praising their superior.

Jiang Fengyi felt as if two little people were fighting in her mind. One said that Xu was rejecting her, while the other said that Xu might just be busy.

Two conflicting thoughts were swirling in her mind, making it impossible for her to concentrate on her work and causing a significant drop in efficiency.

This can't go on.

Jiang Fengyi dialed the internal telephone on her desk.

"Xu Que, bring the monthly financial statements in and come see me."

The one who tied the knot must untie it; Jiang Fengyi is adept at finding the root of the problem and solving it.

Since Xu is preventing me from concentrating on my work, I might as well call her in. Whenever thoughts about her resurface, I should look up at her and clear my mind of those distracting ideas.

Let's restore work efficiency first and finish today's work first.

There was no one at Xu Que's workstation, so He Shuyi, who was next to her, kindly answered the phone for her.

"President Jiang, Xu just happened to come to your office to see you."

As soon as she finished speaking, Xu pushed open the door in front of her, and Jiang Fengyi saw that she was pretending to be holding a document in order to avoid being noticed.

"Come in and get my signature?"

After closing the door, Xu casually tossed aside the documents in her arms: "It's not for a signature." She walked straight toward Jiang Fengyi.

"It's almost time to get off work. Come in and ask what you'd like to eat? I'll make a reservation in advance."

Jiang Fengyi was still working: "Anything to eat is fine." Being in the same room with Xu Que, her work efficiency did indeed improve considerably.

“If there’s nothing else, just sit here and wait for me to finish,” she said without looking up. “Once I’m done, we can go eat together.”

Xu simply brought her computer in and worked alongside Jiang Fengyi. During breaks, she would occasionally look up in Jiang Fengyi's direction.

Every time I looked at her, she was sitting upright at her desk, staring intently at the screen, completely unaware of Xu's prying gaze.

"Hiss~"

While working, Jiang Fengyi suddenly clutched her stomach, a dull pain shooting through her abdomen, forcing her to temporarily abandon her work.

"What's wrong?"

Xu rushed to Jiang Fengyi, bent down and saw Jiang Fengyi clutching her stomach. He asked with concern, "Is your stomach upset?"

Jiang Fengyi curled up in pain, her face pale, and beads of sweat forming on her forehead. She spoke to Xu in a hoarse voice.

"Help...help me get the stomach medicine out of the first-aid kit." She took a breath. "The first-aid kit is in the bottom drawer of the table."

Without saying a word, Xu quickly opened the drawer and precisely located the stomach medicine.

"I'll get you some water."

The warm water in the glass and the unpacked medicine were brought to Jiang Fengyi's lips.

"Swallow one pill first." She put the pill into Jiang Fengyi's mouth, then personally held the water glass and tilted it slightly to feed her so she wouldn't choke.

After swallowing the medicine, Xu stared anxiously at Jiang Fengyi: "Are you feeling any better?"

Jiang Fengyi felt much better after drinking the warm water, but she couldn't help but laugh when she heard Xu Que's question.

"Medications don't work that quickly."

Xu put down his glass and made a gesture to help Jiang Fengyi up: "I'll take her to the hospital for a check-up."

Jiang Fengyi didn't take the stomach pain seriously: "It's an old problem, it'll be fine after taking the medicine, you don't need to worry too much."

Hearing the other party's casual tone, Xu surprisingly adopted a firm stance.

"No, you need to see a doctor!"

She stood right in front of Jiang Fengyi, with an attitude that she would stay there and not leave until Jiang Fengyi agreed to her request. "You don't take your health seriously at all."

In the end, Jiang Fengyi gave in to her.

Xu was about to take a taxi to the hospital when Jiang Fengyi stopped her.

“Just have my private doctor come to the company,” she said, getting down to business. “See if there are any restaurants nearby that you'd like to go to, and we can go eat together after the doctor’s appointment.”

"Don't eat out anymore, your stomach isn't good. Ask the auntie to make some light dishes, we'll eat at home for lunch." She thought for a moment, "Never mind, whatever you want to eat, I'll just make it for you."

"We can buy groceries on our way back."

Xu planned methodically, while Jiang Fengyi listened with great interest. At this moment, the two seemed like a real couple.

Jiang Fengyi said, "I want to eat yam and pork rib soup." Yam is good for the stomach and is a common dish, and Xu is best at making home-style dishes.

Xu Que: "I'll go to the supermarket later to buy some pork ribs and yams."

While the two were chatting, the doctor arrived at the office and conducted a basic consultation and examination on Jiang Fengyi.

"President Jiang, you should eat regularly and in appropriate portions. I suggest you eat more easily digestible foods, such as millet porridge, yam, soft noodles, steamed egg custard, etc. Avoid spicy, greasy, raw, and cold foods."

Jiang Fengyi listened perfunctorily, knowing she couldn't do it; meetings, business trips, busy work... any of these could potentially delay her mealtime.

If you can't do something, just pretend you didn't hear it.

Xu listened intently, carefully taking notes of what the family doctor said.

Xu Que: "Is there anything else?"

Doctor: "It is not advisable to lie down or sit for a long time immediately after meals to avoid reflux. It is recommended to take a walk for 15-20 minutes to aid digestion."

After the doctor checked and found nothing seriously wrong, he left quickly.

The medicine Jiang Fengyi had taken was now taking effect, and her pale face gradually regained its color.

"I'm fine now."

Jiang Fengyi logged out of her account, shut down her computer, stood up, and said to Xu Que, "Let's go buy groceries and go back for dinner."

Xu, who was in the office, stared at Jiang Fengyi for a long time. Before the other party could begin to suspect that something was wrong with her, she said, word by word.

"From now on, I will keep an eye on you."

"To keep an eye on whether you eat on time."
