Chapter 39
I don't have any shares.
"Then I'll come find you now!"
Grandma Zhao assumed she had run away secretly, so she didn't dare ask any more questions and only said she was looking for her.
Jiang Xuan glanced at the pitch-black sky: "It's too late today, let's do it tomorrow."
Shocked, Old Mrs. Zhao regained some of her composure: "Then I'll bring Rufei and Ruxuan to see you tomorrow. The two children haven't seen you for days and keep talking about you."
Jiang Xuan was exhausted from her journey, and the early bedtime routine she had developed at the sanatorium made her sleepy after only a few words.
"Just wanted to let you know I'm out." She yawned. "If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now."
After hanging up the phone, Jiang Xuan fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow. She slept very well and, not being a fan of checking her phone, didn't see the news about Jiang Fengyi's "car accident."
Young people don't go to bed that early.
Jiang Fengyi rarely had the leisure time, so she and Xu nestled on the sofa to watch a movie.
The main lights in the home theater were off, and only the light from the movie screen flickered.
The movie was chosen by Xu Que; it was a highly-rated romance film, but the relationship between the main characters progressed rather slowly, so the two of them couldn't help but start chatting.
Xu glanced sideways at Jiang Fengyi's profile and asked, "Why did you bring your mother out again?"
Jiang Fengyi kept her eyes fixed on the curtain, the light falling on her face as if a layer of soft white moonlight had been applied.
The scene changed several times, with the light source shifting between bright and dark, but Jiang Fengyi's face remained clearly reflected in Xu Que's eyes.
Jiang Fengyi revealed without reservation: "Because Wu Qi discovered that the Zhao family was looking for a share transfer agreement."
Xu vaguely remembered: "Was it the share transfer agreement that she gave you when I accompanied you to your mother's house for dinner last time?"
“No,” Jiang Fengyi turned her head and stared into Xu Que’s eyes, “It was after my mother’s people took you away that I told her I was willing to exchange 10% of my shares for you.”
“I had already drafted the contract, and she could sign it as long as she was willing.”
Jiang Fengyi spoke casually, but every word she uttered weighed heavily on Xu's heart, resounding with profound weight.
The two lead actors on screen are performing an intimate scene.
The two figures off-screen were also huddled together.
"Just when I thought you were good enough to me, I was always surprised to find that you were much better than I thought."
Xu, however, had nowhere to express his love and could only convey his joy through kisses.
"Hmm..."
Jiang Fengyi reached out and covered her lips, gently pushing them away.
"no......"
Xu's eyes immediately showed a hurt expression: "Why?"
Jiang Fengyi walked around her, craning her neck out and staring intently at the movie screen.
"Because I want to see the ending of the movie."
Xu was both amused and exasperated. He returned to his seat and sat down to watch the movie's ending with Jiang Fengyi.
I secretly thought to myself: She definitely won't choose a romance movie next time.
As the movie ended, Xu received a goodnight kiss from Jiang Fengyi, once again thwarting her desire for intimacy.
"Go to bed early, there's a good show to watch tomorrow."
The next day,
Jiang Fengyi was still asleep when she heard a noise beside her pillow. She vaguely heard someone calling her name.
But I'm so sleepy~
My eyes were so sleepy I could barely keep them open. My thick eyelashes only trembled a few times when I heard my name called, and then fell silent.
The person in front of her turned over and continued sleeping, while Xu continued her morning wake-up service.
Last night, Jiang Fengyi repeatedly told Xu to do whatever it took to get her out of bed.
Xu then placed his hand on Jiang Fengyi's cheek, his fingers involuntarily squeezing it.
"So soft!"
She pinched his cheek, making it puff up with chubby flesh. Pressing down with her finger felt like poking a soft, plump glutinous rice ball, leaving a shallow indentation where she touched it. Xu couldn't resist poking it again from a different spot.
The other person's skin was so tender it looked like you could squeeze water out of it. She clearly didn't use much force, but after she let go, a faint red mark was left where she had pinched.
Xu quickly withdrew his hand as if he had made a mistake.
But the red mark on Jiang Fengyi's face was still staring at her, as if accusing Xu Que, the culprit.
The fair skin seemed to be draped in the halo of the cold moon, radiating a lustrous glow. The red marks faded and spread into a larger area.
Her skin was fair with a pinkish tinge, just like a ripe peach. If you looked closely, you could see the fine downy hairs on her cheeks, rising and falling with her breath.
I really want to take a bite.
Jiang Fengyi dreamed that she transformed into a glutinous rice ball, without hands or feet, only a round body. As a glutinous rice ball, she was thrown into a pot, and the heat made her sweat profusely.
Just as I was complaining about the heat, someone suddenly bit my cheek.
Help! Someone is eating glutinous rice balls!
"ah!"
Jiang Fengyi suddenly opened her eyes and saw Xu Que beside her. Without saying a word, she threw herself into Xu Que's arms and said aggrievedly, "I just had a nightmare."
Xu gently patted her back and comforted her, "It's okay, it's okay. Dreams are just dreams. You won't be afraid when you wake up. I'm here for you."
Seeing that Jiang Fengyi in her arms looked much calmer, she asked curiously, "What did you dream about?"
"I dreamt that someone bit me!"
The hand that was patting her back paused for a moment, and Xu stiffened up, stammering, "That...that's really bad."
Jiang Fengyi, still shaken, echoed, "That's right, that's right, so wicked!"
*
Because of his recent routine, Jiang Xuan woke up as soon as it was light.
A well-rested person wakes up feeling refreshed. She jogs around the house a few times to exercise, and when she returns, her aunt has already prepared breakfast.
Jiang Xuan took a bite of a shrimp dumpling and called out to the kitchen auntie, "Prepare one more serving for each person in the morning from now on."
The aunt asked in confusion, "Is Fengyi going to live at home?"
"No, it's just that I've had a better appetite lately."
Strangely enough, after staying in the sanatorium for a few days, apart from her being angry every day, her health, sleep, and appetite all improved.
She could clearly feel that her body was much healthier than it had been before.
Jiang Xuan finished off the breakfast on the table all by herself.
After the meal, she went for a walk in the garden to digest her food. The warm morning light shone on her shoulders as she enjoyed the sunshine and admired the blooming flowers.
The Zhao family arrived at that moment.
When the old lady Zhao saw Jiang Xuan living such a leisurely life, she gritted her teeth to keep the jealousy and resentment in her eyes from showing.
Regardless of what she was thinking, she wore a warm smile and waved to Jiang Xuan from afar.
"So you're in such high spirits today? Enjoying the beautiful scenery in the garden so early in the morning."
Upon closer inspection, it became clear that Jiang Xuan looked quite well. It turned out that neither Grandma Zhao nor the two younger relatives had slept well the previous night, and they had to use thick concealer to cover the dark circles under their eyes.
Jiang Xuan let out a lazy sigh: "I only realized how beautifully the flowers in the yard are blooming when I woke up this morning."
She gestured for the three of them to sit down: "It's a pity that these flowers are blooming here but no one appreciates them. If you have time, come and see the flowers more often, and also come and see this old woman living alone."
Zhao Rufei immediately chimed in, "Aunt Jiang is not an empty-nest elderly person at all. So many people want to keep you company but can't find the opportunity." She then sat down next to Jiang Xuan.
“If you don’t mind, we’ll come here every day to bother you.”
Jiang Xuan smiled and took her hand: "You should ask your grandmother how she raised you to be so considerate and good at coaxing people."
"Why don't you stay here for lunch? I'll have Auntie make whatever you'd like to eat."
Before the Zhao family could refuse, she added, "It's too lonely eating at home alone."
Grandma Zhao readily agreed: "Then I will respectfully accept your offer. As I get older, I love to have a lively meal."
Everyone sat in the flower-filled courtyard, chatting and laughing happily. However, the Zhao family members had different thoughts and their attention was not on admiring the flowers. Instead, their eyes were all on Jiang Xuan, who was at the center of the conversation.
In the courtyard, the only person who truly appreciated the blooming flowers was Jiang Xuan.
As the sun rose higher, the sunlight became increasingly intense.
The group reluctantly went inside, and before leaving, Old Mrs. Zhao said, "Next time the flowers bloom in your yard, remember to call me to come and see them."
"Definitely, definitely."
As soon as she stepped into the air-conditioned living room, Mrs. Zhao took a deep breath. At her advanced age, she was finally relieved that she no longer had to sit outside in the sweltering heat and feed on mosquitoes.
Trying to please Jiang Xuan is such a difficult task!
Grandma Zhao hadn't forgotten the purpose of her trip. She didn't even bother to find out how Jiang Xuan had sneaked out of the sanatorium; she only wanted to find out about the shares Jiang Xuan owned.
She guessed that she had probably secretly contacted a bodyguard to pick her up. There was nothing to ask about it; it was far less important than the shares.
Grandma Zhao first prepared her thoughts in her mind, then casually began to chat: "I really envy your life. You don't have to think about anything every day, and you're surrounded by people who serve you."
She said this from the bottom of her heart; she genuinely envied Jiang Xuan's good fortune.
Jiang Xuan gave her a strange look: "Don't you live a similar life? Don't you have any servants? Do you cook and clean by yourself?"
"We're pretty much the same, why are you envious of me for no reason?"
Grandma Zhao shook her head repeatedly: "How can a retired old lady like me compare to you..." As she spoke, she looked at Jiang Xuan's expression, hoping that he would continue.
Jiang Xuan nodded, "That's true. I haven't retired yet, and I still have to take time out of my schedule to go to the company for meetings every week. Your life is much more comfortable than mine."
The Zhao family: ......
Grandma Zhao: Is that what I meant?
"I envy that you can still work at the company. Interacting with young people helps you maintain a youthful mindset."
Jiang Xuan looked at her with a "Are you crazy?" expression, about to retort, when she thought of the project reports that couldn't be implemented every time she attended a meeting, and her vision went black.
"Thinking about it carefully, you're right. When you see the project plans your subordinates submit, you get so angry you turn into a grandson. Doesn't that make you look younger?"
Grandma Zhao choked again.
She glanced at Jiang Xuan, stopped beating around the bush, and finally revealed the purpose of her trip.
"Even if you don't work, the company's stock dividends will add up to a considerable amount over the years."
Jiang Xuan nodded: "So I've delegated all the company's affairs, big and small, to Jiang Fengyi. I only need to attend a meeting occasionally."
With a genuine smile on her face, she said, "It's really nice to be able to collect money without having to work." Her gaze swept over Old Mrs. Zhao, "But it's still not as good as you. You can collect money without even having to attend any meetings."
Grandma Zhao tried to steer the conversation back on track: "Stop teasing me. How can a pension compare to the dividends from your company shares?"
"I don't own any company shares."
"What!"
Grandma Zhao was so shocked that she stood up, her disbelief even more intense than that of Jiang Xuan, the person involved.
"You're a director of Jingjiang, how could you not have company shares?"
She stared intently at Jiang Xuan, determined to find a loophole to prove he was lying.
"I don't believe it!"
You're definitely lying to me!
