Chapter 65: Setting Up the Tent

Chapter 65: Setting Up the Tent

While everyone was setting up the tent, Ling Yun picked out more than 20 young people and asked Jiang Goudan to lead them back to look for the lost luggage.

The men who stayed behind looked for suitable trees around for support, while the women gathered together to sew together the hyena skins they had obtained earlier.

"Sew a few smaller ones first, and then put them together to make the roof later," Mrs. Wu said loudly as she sewed.

Hyena skin cannot be sewn with embroidery needles, so the older women, led by Mrs. Lu, sharpened small branches into sharp wooden needles; the girls in the family were now twisting ropes as thick as noodles.

"Second sister, can this rope be made?" Shen Qingxiao asked Shen Qingman uncertainly while rubbing the soft layer inside the bark.

The sisters, Shen Qingyu and Shen Qingning, took the other kids, including Shen Zhe, to collect firewood nearby.

Shen Qingman and Shen Qingxiao were responsible for kneading the bark and rolling the softened bark into ropes respectively. They were not very good at it at first, but became proficient after a cup of tea and now looked quite capable.

"Since Mrs. Lu said it's okay, there should be no problem." Shen Qingman carefully mixed the two pieces of bark in his hands together and replied casually.

Shen Qingxiao was still skeptical. "If it's mixed together bit by bit, will it break if the wind blows?"

This is for sewing tents. If it gets blown off at night, they will freeze to death.

"Don't worry, Third Sister," Shen Qingqian said. She had just given Liang the medicine and watched her fall asleep before coming over to the sisters. "The bark itself has resin. When you rub it, it softens. Once it's sewn onto the hyena skin, it will become strong when the wind blows."

She had already seen that the bark chosen by the Lu family was one of the earliest trees used to make adhesives. Shen Qingqian couldn't remember the name of the tree for a moment, but she remembered the working principle of this adhesive.

"Ah, it can be like this?" Shen Qingxiao was stunned by Shen Qingqian's explanation.

Shen Qingqian chuckled, "Grandfather has always told me that the world is vast and full of wonders. There are still many magical things in nature. Third sister, why don't you take advantage of our time in the mountains to experience them carefully."

After saying this, she also sat down and rubbed the bark with Shen Qingxiao.

It is not easy to sew together more than a hundred hyena skins. A lot of ropes are needed, and the mixed bark is not enough. Half of the ropes brought by Shen Qingqian and others were used to make up for it, and the ropes made of mixed bark were added, which was barely enough.

There were many of them, but the conditions did not allow them to set up elaborate tents, especially since they had just come out of heavy snow and rain a few days ago and it was still very cold at night. They could only use hyena skins to build a large tent that was just big enough to accommodate so many people.

"I've already driven the stakes in here!"

“I’ve got it done here too!”

"I also"

Li Laosan wiped the sweat from his face, glanced around, straightened up, and shouted, "As soon as the stakes are driven in, quickly build a scaffold. Don't be lazy! That person, Chen Er, I'm talking about you!"

At first, Chen Er worked hard because Sheng Ze was next to him, but after Sheng Ze went to look for wood, he started to slack off.

After being yelled at by Li Laosan, Chen Er slowly stood up and shouted: "Who is being lazy? I am tired and squatted for a while. I will tie the frame now."

This group of people didn't have any carpentry tools, so there was no way they could build a rack with mortise and tenon structure, but they could probably just tie it up with some straw ropes.

A group of people worked hard, and when it got dark, a simple large tent was set up.
