Chapter 51: Building a Firewood Shed Together

After lunch, Yun Guyuan cleaned up skillfully.

Then Yi Qingqing began to try out the bow. She could just pull Yun Guyuan's bow to its full length.

"Don't you feel tired?" Yun Guyuan asked.

Yi Qingqing shook her head, "It seems just right."

Yun Guyuan had a deep understanding of her strength this time, "Okay, I understand."

"Then let's stop here today?" Yi Qingqing said.

Yun Guyuan said, "Wait, I'm going to build a bacon shack anyway, do you want one?"

Of course Yi Qingqing wanted it. She planned to ask Uncle Yougen for help under the pretext of needing a woodshed. If the woodshed was a little bigger, it could be used to store firewood and smoke meat. So what did he mean?

Yun Guyuan glanced at the firewood in Yi Qingqing's backpack and said, "You are storing firewood for the winter, right? It's better to put it in a place that can be sheltered from the rain so that it can be burned when it's needed. I also want to build a firewood room and use it to smoke meat. Why don't we do it together?"

Seeing Yi Qingqing was a little hesitant, he added, "This firewood shed is built in a corner of the yard. It has two walls that can be shared with the yard wall and the back wall of the house. We just need to build two more walls and add some thatch to make the roof. The two of us can work together and divide the work. I'll get the soil for the wall and you'll be in charge of mowing the grass, so it'll be faster."

What he said does make sense, but she is still taking advantage. Yi Qingqing doesn't want to owe anyone a favor, and this person doesn't want any money. He can't postpone the deadline for teaching cooking, right?

"If you think I'm at a disadvantage, then after the woodshed is built, just cook me a delicious meal," said Yun Guyuan.

How come this man seemed to know what she was thinking? By making a delicious meal, judging by the standards of the last time she treated everyone, she wasn't taking advantage. After all, food was expensive these days. It was almost the same as asking Uncle Yougen to help. It was hard to refuse, as she still depended on him for her bow and rocking chair.

"Okay, then I'll go mow the lawn in the afternoon," Yi Qingqing agreed.

Yun Guyuan nodded and watched her go. He actually wanted to go mow the grass with her, chop trees and get wood with her, and be by her side all the time, but if he acted too hastily, he would scare her away.

She had no choice but to ask him for the rocking chair and hunting bow, but with her relationship with the villagers in Jianchaifang Village, she could have asked someone else. Although he forced her to come this time, she gave in, which was a great improvement.

At least we can spend more time together through this incident.

…………

After the two separated, Yi Qingqing first carried the firewood in the basket back home, and then went to cut grass.

The cut grass was spread out in the yard and dried on the land where no crops were planted.

These fields are reserved for the seedlings to grow and then be transplanted.

Afterwards, she cleared out a space in the corner of the wall near the house to build a firewood shed in the future.

After finishing these, she started cooking.

We had meat for lunch, so we had a light meal at night. I made three servings of leek pie and egg drop soup.

Yi Qingqing estimated that with one afternoon today and the time after work tomorrow, the woodshed would be almost ready, so she decided to be responsible for Yun Guyuan's two dinners.

But it can't be too sumptuous. In this era, even wealthy families can't have meat and fish for every meal.

So let’s keep it simple tonight and make something oily tomorrow night.

Of the three pies, two were reserved for her, for two meals in the evening and tomorrow morning, and the other one was for Yun Guyuan.

When she was done, she went over and knocked on the door.

Yun Guyuan opened the door quickly.

"This is tonight's meal," Yi Qingqing handed him the two bowls in her hand, "Today's meal is simpler, I'll make you something better tomorrow."

Yun Guyuan originally thought that he could only eat the meal she cooked tomorrow, but he didn't expect to have it today. It was a pleasant surprise. "My hands are a little dirty. Come in and help me put it on the table."

Yi Qingqing had only come in on the first night, when she, Qian Lailai and the other two were cleaning the dust on the kang. The last time she saw the stove he had built, she had only glanced at it from the door. At that time, the room was still very simple, and the newspapers were only pasted on the side close to the kang.

This time when she came in, she saw that there was a bookshelf on the kang with many books on it, a notebook on the kang table, and newspapers on several walls, which were posted more neatly than hers. There were also many more objects and furniture in the room.

"After I finish my meal, I will come to help you tread the soil," Yi Qingqing put the bowl on his table.

"No need, I'm almost done. You can rest early after eating. You still have to go to work tomorrow. Don't get too tired," said Yun Guyuan.

During these few days of vacation, she has been busy all the time, and he feels sorry for her seeing this.

"Okay, then I'll leave," Yi Qingqing didn't insist after hearing him say that he was almost done.

After going back to eat and wash up, I went back to class.

She also slept lightly, and in the second half of the night, she suddenly heard a soft rustling sound.

I opened my eyes suddenly. There couldn’t be a mouse!

She listened carefully and found that the sound came from the wall beside the kang on the left.

It didn't sound like a mouse stealing food, but rather like something drilling into the wall.

She turned on the flashlight and tiptoed out of bed, but as soon as she got out of bed, the sound disappeared.

After stopping and listening for a while, she seemed to hear the door of the room next door creak slightly, followed by the sound of footsteps going away.

That’s not right. No one lives in the room next door. Who is in there and what are they doing?

She remembered the sound of drilling in the wall just now, which also came from the wall of the uninhabited room, as if it was on the kang near the window. She turned on the flashlight and checked the wall carefully.

"Why is there a hole here?"

If she hadn't noticed a small amount of dust on the straw cloth covering the kang, and checked upwards from that place, she would not have discovered that there was a place where her feet were caught in the cracks between the bricks, and that there was a small hole the size of a chopstick head in the newspaper she had just pasted yesterday.

The hole was covered by torn newspaper and could not be seen unless you looked carefully.

Someone was drilling a hole in the wall late at night. Who was it? What did he want to do?

But even if she didn't hear the sound tonight, she would be able to find this pinch of dust at the latest tomorrow at noon when she was eating on the kang. This was because after the newspaper was pasted on the kang, there would not be so much dust on the kang in a short period of time, and the straw felt was covered with light-colored cloth, so the dust was very conspicuous.

But if she hadn't pasted so many newspapers, or hadn't covered the straw mat with cloth, this little bit of dust would have been very inconspicuous, and even the small hole in the wall would have been difficult to detect.

This shows that the person who drilled the hole didn't know the structure of her house, otherwise he would not have acted so rashly.

Then anyone who entered her room can be ruled out as a suspect.
