Yi Zhonghai's face was numb. After a while, he sighed deeply and reached out to wipe away the tears of the old woman.
"This is our fate, it has nothing to do with you. We've managed all these years without children, why make things difficult for yourself!"
Hearing Yi Zhonghai's words of comfort, the old woman cried even harder.
The neighbors felt bad for them. Some women who usually got along well with the older woman wanted to help the two up, but their husbands pulled them back.
Why are you pulling me? Let go.
Aunt Wang from the Intermediate People's Court turned around and glared at her husband, "You're afraid of offending Yan Bugui and Liu Haizhong, but I'm not."
Uncle Wang could only shake his head helplessly: "It's not about offending anyone, I just can't stand what Yi Zhonghai did before."
Aunt Wang frowned: "Why didn't you say anything before when you couldn't stand it? Now that this old lady is crying like this, how can I just ignore it?"
"What's wrong with bringing it up now? I'm already being kind by not kicking you when you're down."
Uncle Wang glared at him, then angrily turned and walked away.
Aunt Wang stepped forward, helped the older woman up, and after comforting her for a while, the two of them helped Yi Zhonghai up as well.
It has to be admitted that Yi Zhonghai is still vigorous despite his age, able to stand up after being beaten like that. I wonder if Jia Zhangshi and her son nearby are faking it, since they've been lying on the ground for so long.
Yan Jiecheng had gotten up from the ground long ago. While everyone was watching Yi Zhonghai get beaten, he would occasionally go over and kick Jia Zhangshi and Jia Dongxu a couple of times.
He was sitting on the steps under the window of Sha Zhu's west room, smoking and staring at Jia Zhangshi and her son.
Seeing Yi Zhonghai's horrific state after being beaten, an older woman thought of reporting it to the police, but Yi Zhonghai objected.
"Go check on Dongxu and his wife. If they're alright, then forget it. Even though I'm no longer the head of the compound, as a member of the compound, my principles will remain the same. We'll handle things behind closed doors, without causing trouble for anyone or the police."
Yi Zhonghai's teeth were sore from Xu Damao's beating that he could barely open one eye, yet he still spoke with righteous indignation.
Hearing this sound from not far away, Wang Dabao almost couldn't help but applaud Lao Yi.
"Hmph, what a hypocritical old man, acting like nobody's afraid of calling the police." Liu Guangtian sneered, glancing at Wang Dabao. "Uncle Dabao, what do you suggest we do next?"
"Yeah, Da Bao, look how Yi Zhonghai and his apprentice have messed up the normal election process like this. Do we even want to continue?"
Liu Haizhong, supporting his back, asked Wang Dabao for instructions.
"Keep going, why don't you keep going?"
Wang Dabao patted Liu Haizhong on the shoulder, "Old Liu, you were very brave to subdue the troublemakers just now. Next, get everyone back to their seats, and then let Da Mao speak. That will confirm his position as mediator."
Liu Haizhong nodded, then turned and said a few more words to Yan Bugui before walking towards the crowd.
"Everyone, please be quiet and listen to me."
"That was just a farce. Someone tried to disrupt the campaign, but the situation has been calmed down. Now everyone, please return to your seats and let's continue with the unfinished process."
Yan Bugui seized the opportunity to say a few words, took off his glasses and wiped them, and found that there was a crack on the left lens.
This terrified Yan Bugui. He examined the glasses from all angles and finally confirmed that there really was a crack. His face fell immediately; repairing these glasses would cost a lot of money.
Seeing that Yan Bugui's face was so gloomy it was almost dripping with water, Xu Damao leaned over to take a look and asked, "Uncle, how much does it cost to repair these glasses?"
"That must cost more than two yuan!"
Yan Bugui's eyes were lifeless, and he was almost crying. "Sigh, I was careless. The loss is huge now. I would have been better off taking a few more kicks."
Xu Damao was still excited and full of anticipation for the mediator position he was about to get. "How about this, Uncle, you can make do with these for now. It's almost Chinese New Year, and I'll have more opportunities to show movies in the countryside. I'll pay for your glasses repairs then."
After saying that, Xu Damao raised his big head, as if he was taking care of me.
Yan Bugui was stunned. He slowly looked up at Xu Damao, his eyes filled with hope: "Damao, are you serious? You can't be making fun of Uncle San!"
"It's definitely real! I, Xu Damao, am a man of my word, how could it be fake!" Xu Damao seemed dismissive of Yan Bugui's doubts. "If you don't believe me, you can go and fix it yourself. Just give me the receipt and I'll reimburse you."
"Then...then you can help Uncle San fix it."
After receiving confirmation, Yan Bugui put on a fawning smile: "Da Mao, those two votes from the Third Uncle were all for you. You really didn't disappoint me!"
Xu Damao smiled and said, "Just you wait and see. I'll definitely do a better job than Yi Zhonghai."
Before the election, Liu Haizhong said that whether he could hold his position as mediator depended on the supervision of the other two mediators. At this point, it would be impossible not to offer some benefits to bribe Liu and Yan.
The older woman originally intended to help Yi Zhonghai home, but Yi Zhonghai insisted on sitting back in the seat where the meeting had taken place, to watch what would happen next.
The Jia Zhang family was already in a terrible situation, and Aunt Wang couldn't bear to make things worse for them, so she helped them back to where they had been sitting.
Although Sha Zhu didn't win the election, he was quite happy after watching a great show. However, when he sat down and saw Xu Damao in front of him, the smile on his face quickly disappeared.
The thought of Xu Damao constantly showing off in front of him made him feel like he had a stone stuck in his chest, making it hard to breathe.
