A crowd gathered at the door to watch Xu Damao and Yi Zhonghai put up the couplets.
Sha Zhu joked from the side, "Hey Xu Damao, this represents the good fortune of our whole courtyard. You'd better put it up straight, otherwise if everyone has bad luck this year, they'll have to come to you."
Xu Damao rolled his eyes at Sha Zhu, "You talk too much nonsense. If you have so much free time, why don't you help Uncle Yi and me move our stools? Besides, you're just having bad luck, why are you blaming others?"
Sha Zhu looked at Wang Dabao and Liu Haizhong: "Look, I was the one who was in the wrong for trying to remind him."
Just then, Yan Bugui rushed out in a hurry.
"Da Mao and Lao Yi, you two have to make sure you put up the couplets on time, as it signifies a year of celebration for our courtyard."
Sha Zhu curled his lip and said, "See what I told you? You still didn't believe me. Although we can't promote superstition, there are some things that you really can't help but believe in."
Yan Bugui glared at Sha Zhu with his small eyes: "Go away, go away! I'm a teacher, and you're talking to me about superstition? I think you ate too much this morning."
"Alright, Second Uncle, it's the New Year today, I won't hold it against you. I won't bother you on New Year's Eve, but I definitely won't let you off the hook on New Year's Day."
Sha Zhu chuckled and stood to the side, his hands tucked into his sleeves.
After the couplets were pasted up, everyone was admiring them when Qin Huairu returned from the street with locust blossoms.
"Wow, once these couplets are up, it immediately feels like the New Year," Qin Huairu said with a smile.
When Sha Zhu saw Qin Huairu, he quickly went up to her and said, "Sister Qin, if you need anything at home, just let me know."
Qin Huairu looked at Sha Zhu gratefully, "It's almost done, thank you Zhuzi. Just come over early tonight to make dumplings."
Alright.
Sha Zhu happily agreed.
Qin Huairu left with a message that everyone was busy, and then took the locust flowers into the courtyard.
