Early the next morning.
Wang Dabao took his identification, gun, and uniform he received at the police station, pushed his bicycle, and went out the door.
He didn't wear the uniform, firstly because it was too conspicuous in the compound, and secondly because working at the steel rolling mill was different from working at the police station; perhaps the steel rolling mill would issue a different set of uniforms.
The security department's office was located in the steel rolling mill, which was supposed to be under dual jurisdiction, but in reality, it was not under the jurisdiction of the steel rolling mill.
Pushing my bicycle to the front yard, I saw Yan Bugui sitting listlessly at the door, staring blankly at a few potted flowers from afar.
Wang Dabao was stunned. This old Yan really lived up to his reputation as the gatekeeper of the compound. He looked like he was about to die yesterday, and he wasn't in much better shape today. Even in this state, he was still watching the gate and sticking to his post!
Hearing the noise, Yan Bugui slowly turned his head. His numb and empty eyes regained a glimmer of life when he saw Wang Dabao, but his voice was still weak and listless.
"Oh, it's Da Bao! Why are you leaving so early? Where are you going?"
"Old Yan, if you're not feeling well, go lie down on the kang (heated brick bed). What are you doing sitting here?"
When Wang Dabao saw Yan Bugui pull out a crumpled cigarette box, he knew that the old man had dried the cigarettes that were wet yesterday. He quickly took out his own cigarettes and said, "Alright, don't smoke those anymore. Otherwise, someone else will get poisoned."
Yan Bugui took the cigarette and lit it: "Hey, I'm not addicted to cigarettes. A pack of cigarettes can last me half a month, so I'll just make do with it."
"By the way, you still haven't told me what you're going to do there?"
Wang Dabao thought the topic had been blown out of the way, but Yan Bugui brought it back again.
"Oh, so the work that's not listed above has been assigned. I'm going to report for duty today."
"Wow, that's great news! Where have you been assigned? What's the job?"
Wang Dabao getting a job is a big deal for Yan Bugui. He'll probably have to cook some meat that night to celebrate, and his family can benefit from it too.
"Sigh, I was just a lowly worker at a steel rolling mill."
Seeing Yan Bugui's eagerness to inquire, Wang Dabao could guess that the news of his joining the steel rolling mill would spread throughout the compound within half a day. "Alright, you're busy, I'll be going now."
"Hey, Da Bao, don't go yet, let's chat a little longer..."
Yan Bugui stood up, wanting to inquire further, but Wang Dabao ignored him and pushed his bicycle away.
Shaking his head, Yan Bugui hurried back into the house to report to his third aunt the news that Wang Dabao was about to join the steel rolling mill.
As Wang Dabao rode his bicycle toward the police station, he pondered along the way that his test of Yan Bugui was not thorough enough.
Director Zhao Mingyuan and instructor Liu Changshan had been waiting for Wang Dabao for a long time. After exchanging pleasantries, the three of them headed to the Hongxing Steel Rolling Mill.
Hongxing Steel Rolling Mill is a large state-owned enterprise in Beijing.
At that time, the factory had nearly 10,000 employees and numerous workshops of all sizes.
Deputy section chiefs like Wang Dabao basically just coast along in the office.
Of course, this is assuming no one is being troublesome.
As for the workers in the steel rolling mill, from engineers to apprentices, no one dared to easily provoke the security personnel. It's a joke; if the security staff wanted to punish someone, it would be incredibly easy—they could just fabricate a charge and the person would be in for it.
The guards at the gate were all heavily armed; this was no joke.
Wang Dabao presented his identification and a letter of introduction.
Upon seeing the letter of introduction, one of the security guards visibly paused, then hurriedly ran to the nearby reception room. Within ten seconds, a man in his forties strode out of the room.
The man approached Wang Dabao and his two companions with his identification. The first person he saw was Zhao Mingyuan. "Are you Director Zhao?" he asked.
Zhao Mingyuan smiled and nodded, "Hello comrade, I am Zhao Mingyuan. I am here today to report for duty with Deputy Section Chief Wang."
"Deputy Section Chief Wang?"
The man's eyes swept over Wang Dabao and instructor Liu Changshan.
Zhao Mingyuan put his arm around Wang Dabao's shoulder: "This is your future Deputy Section Chief Wang. He was injured and retired from the front line. The higher-ups have assigned him to work at your steel rolling mill."
"Hello, Section Chief Wang."
The man quickly saluted Wang Dabao, "I am Zheng Jun, the captain of the first squadron of the security team of our security department."
After saying that, Zheng Jun handed the documents and letter of introduction back to Wang Dabao.
Zhao Mingyuan chuckled and said, "Then I'll trouble Captain Zheng to take us to see your Factory Director Yang. I've already forwarded Deputy Section Chief Wang's appointment documents, and I believe Factory Director Yang has been waiting for Deputy Section Chief Wang to take office."
"Please come this way, gentlemen. I'll take you to Director Yang's office."
Zheng Jun was very respectful, constantly sizing up his new superior along the way.
He was also a soldier, and he could clearly feel the unique killing intent of a soldier in Wang Dabao. At the same time, he was shocked to see that the other party was imposing and walked with a powerful stride, obviously at least a company commander in the army.
The Security Department is an independent department with a wide scope of management. Without certain qualifications, one cannot become the department head.
Of course, if he hadn't been a cadre transferred to civilian work, he wouldn't have been able to take up the position of deputy section chief.
What surprised Zheng Jun was Wang Dabao's age; he was so young, looking to be only in his early twenties, which showed the deputy section chief's competence.
The group of four turned two corners and soon saw the government building not far away.
On the way, through Zheng Jun's brief introduction, Wang Dabao learned that the security department had about 240 people.
This included the security team, the public order team, the workers' militia armed team protecting the factory, and the equipment department that managed firearms.
Security captain Zheng Jun couldn't figure out the deputy section chief's temperament, so he didn't say much and just gave a brief introduction.
Upon entering the third floor of the government office building, the group soon stopped in front of a door marked with the words "Factory Director's Office".
