On the second day after moving into the new house, Xu Damao got up very early, while Wang Minzhi was still sleeping; she was too tired last night.
Yesterday, the two of them were so focused on moving in that they forgot to invite their relatives and friends. So they decided to get up early, buy some groceries, and cook dinner at home for everyone.
Nowadays, the variety of vegetables in the market is limited, but the meat selection is much better. Xu Damao has money and coupons, but nowhere to spend them. However, the crowds everywhere in the early morning invigorated Xu Damao, who hadn't had much rest lately. This must be the lively atmosphere of everyday life.
After strolling around for a while and buying some groceries, Xu Damao returned to the courtyard house when it was almost time. But as soon as he got home, there was someone waiting for him inside.
"Rain, what brings you here so early in the morning?"
Sitting in his living room was none other than Sha Zhu's younger sister, He Yushui. This girl had gone back to school after being scolded by Sha Zhu at the last donation event, and hadn't been seen for a long time.
"Da Mao, you're finally back! Yu Shui came over as soon as you left, but she wouldn't tell me anything. Yu Shui, your brother Da Mao is back, tell me quickly," Wang Minzhi said to Xu Da Mao.
It seems this little girl has been here for a while.
When He Yushui saw Xu Damao enter, she immediately stood up from her seat, greeted him, and then stood there silently until Wang Minzhi spoke.
"Brother Da Mao, um, I need your help with something!"
It seemed as if she had used all her strength to finally utter those words from her thin body. After speaking them, He Yushui seemed to have been relieved of a heavy burden; her previously hunched body straightened up a bit, and she finally dared to meet Xu Damao's gaze.
Seeing the questioning look in Xu Damao's eyes, He Yushui seemed to remember something and quickly rummaged in her pocket. After a while, several ten-yuan bills appeared in her hand.
"Brother Da Mao, I have money! But this is all I have for now. Take it first, and I'll pay you back slowly after I start working." He Yushui stuffed all the money into Xu Da Mao's hand.
This completely baffled Xu Damao. He turned to his wife for help, but Wang Minzhi gave him a look that said, "Don't ask me, I don't know." Sigh, this girl didn't ask for any favors, she just threw money at him. How could she be so worldly, just like Xu Damao?
"Yushui, stop pulling and tugging, sit down and talk." After saying that, Xu Damao and his wife finally managed to persuade He Yushui to sit down.
"Tell me, what exactly happened?" Xu Damao asked.
"Brother Da Mao, I know you are a capable person, a leader, and the highest-ranking person I know. I only came to you because I had no other choice."
I'm a senior in high school and will be graduating soon. I know that with my grades, I almost certainly won't get into university, and I'm not really interested in going to university; I just want to start working as soon as possible. However, I've heard that ordinary high school graduates are only randomly assigned to factory jobs, while those with connections can get into factories or other organizations and find good positions.
My classmate secured a position at the steel rolling mill early on, and I heard it's in an office in the management department. She told me that you have to find someone early and it costs money, otherwise you'll definitely end up working in the workshop later.
So, after thinking about it for a long time, I can only...
He Yushui spoke slowly, finally revealing her purpose for coming: to find a good job. She emphasized that this was true not only now, but also 60 years from now—a unique characteristic indeed.
For Xu Damao, this was no big deal at all. In this day and age, high school students were considered highly educated, and the government could basically arrange jobs for them. Besides, the auto repair shop was newly established and constantly expanding, so it was in dire need of all kinds of talent. Arranging a job for He Yushui was just a favor, and there was no need for any job quota.
But the He family is different from other families; helping them might backfire and cause trouble. Sha Zhu, with his personality, isn't a reasonable person; he lives entirely according to his own logic.
"Have you asked your brother about this? Or does your brother know you came to see me?" Xu Damao asked the crucial question.
The two siblings are still blood relatives. Even though their relationship seems to be in trouble now, they are still siblings. Who knows, one day Sha Zhu might bring this up and say that Xu Damao is meddling in other people's business.
“I haven’t asked him, and he hasn’t paid any attention to my affairs. Now he’s only thinking about the Jia family.” He Yushui said, sounding aggrieved.
“Rain, we’re all from the same compound, so if I were able, I would help you with your problem. But you know your family situation, especially your brother’s personality. If I help you directly, he might smash my window.”
So, regarding your job situation, either you should directly ask your brother for help—he knows quite a few leaders—or have your brother come to me, or you could get your uncle to come to me, and I'll get it done for you too.”
Xu Damao did feel some sympathy for the young girl, but he didn't want to get involved with the He family. He was willing to help, but he wanted Sha Zhu or Yi Zhonghai to do it, so as not to end up pleasing neither side.
He Yushui hadn't expected that what she had been thinking about for so long, seemingly with some progress, also seemed to have brought her back to square one. She knew her brother's personality perfectly well; he was absolutely unwilling to stoop so low as to beg Xu Damao, whom he had looked down on in the past. It seemed she could only ask Uncle Yi.
As for contacting the leaders her brother knew, she hadn't even considered that possibility. Sha Zhu often boasted about knowing many high-ranking officials, and he had indeed benefited from it, but whether this would actually get things done was another matter.
Besides, judging from her brother's appearance, he was determined to support the Jia family. The more she asked her brother for help now, the more the Jia family might squeeze from her later. He Yushui's biggest wish now was to find a good job and a good family as soon as possible, so she could have less contact with Sha Zhu.
She sought help from Xu Damao, even if it cost a little money, it was within her means. But if she were to become involved with the Jia family, she would never be able to distance herself from them for the rest of her life.
He Yushui went out anyway, and Yi Zhonghai was probably already at work, so there was nothing to do in the morning.
"This little girl is really something, having to take care of everything on her own at such a young age."
Looking at He Yushui's worried expression as she tried to find a good job, Wang Minzhi thought about how she had been lucky to have hooked up with Li Tong back then. Otherwise, she didn't know what would have become of her now, and she certainly wouldn't have met Xu Damao.
“She has seen through Sha Zhu and the Jia family, so she is eager to break away. Her father was unreliable when she was young, and her brother was unreliable when she grew up, so it’s no wonder that she has a somewhat cold personality,” Xu Damao said.
"Help as much as you can," Wang Minzhi said to her husband.
The two quickly ate something, left the child with Xu's mother, and went to work. As for notifying people to come over for lunch, Xu Damao planned to make a trip there at noon.
