Chapter 23 Winning Over the Father-in-Law

Wang Minzhi found it amusing. Xu Damao, usually so sharp-tongued, was surprisingly nervous. But since she had chosen him, she couldn't let everyone look down on him, so she introduced him to everyone, breaking the awkward atmosphere.

"Mom and Dad, brother and sister-in-law, this is Xu Damao. Damao, this is my dad, mom, brother and sister-in-law."

With Wang Minzhi's introduction, Xu Damao also calmed down. He used his usual boasting skills to greet the people who would determine the success or failure of this mission.

"Hello, Uncle and Aunt, hello, Brother and Sister-in-law. It's my first time visiting, so I didn't know what to bring. I just bought some cigarettes and alcohol, and a few bottles of face cream." Xu Damao really didn't know what to bring for the women, so he bought cosmetics from this era, following the practice of later generations.

"Since you're here, why bother buying anything? Da Mao, have a seat. Jianguo, go make some tea for your brother Da Mao."

Wang Minzhi's mother was delighted to hear that she received something of her own. Her family wasn't lacking in such things, but this was the first time someone had given her a gift. She had a very good first impression of her future son-in-law.

"Mom, let me do it. Damao, sit down and make yourself at home." Wang Minzhi, who was about the same age as Xu Damao, was a very kind person.

"Thank you, Mom, thank you, sister-in-law. Then I won't stand on ceremony." After saying that, Xu Damao didn't sit down. Instead, he took out a pack of good cigarettes that he had prepared in advance and handed them out to Wang Minzhi's father and brother.

Three grown men and a little boy, four people in total, sat chatting in the living room. The three women went to the inner room and the kitchen to prepare lunch.

"Brother, you train conductors have traveled to many places, which place do you think has the best scenery?"

Wang Minzhi's older brother, Wang Shusheng, is a train conductor, which means he travels to more places than most people. Xu Damao's question was like scratching an itch for him.

"Da Mao, I mainly drive the Northeast route now, but I've also driven with many other vehicles before, covering quite a few places all over the country. Let me tell you, in terms of scenery, each has its own unique charm."

Wang Shusheng, a typical Beijinger, was very eloquent and couldn't stop talking once he started. Wang Minzhi's father, who had also traveled by train in his younger days, was also very knowledgeable. As they talked, the conversation drifted off-topic, and the group began to discuss the supernatural events they had encountered on the train.

Xu Damao, having convenient transportation in his later years, had traveled to many places and watched numerous travel documentaries. Now, he frequently goes to rural areas to show movies, having heard and seen a great deal, so his cooperation with the two of them is quite suitable.

Wang Jianguo, that kid, is precocious despite his young age. He likes to listen, but the more he listens, the more scared he becomes, yet he can't bear to leave.

When the women brought the dishes to the table, Wang Jianguo shrank to their feet and hugged Wang Shusheng's leg. He looked absolutely hilarious.

"What are you talking about? Look how scared Jianguo is," Wang Minzhi asked curiously.

"Haha, it's nothing. Jianguo, what we're talking about today, don't go around saying it outside. These things are considered feudal superstition now, and you can't talk about them outside," Wang Shusheng instructed.

"Brother, I know. But next time you have time and we're home, tell me about it." This kid is really fascinated by these things.

The Wang family had prepared a particularly lavish lunch for Xu Damao's arrival. But Xu Damao wasn't there for the food; he planned to get his father-in-law and brother-in-law drunk first, and then everything would be easier.

The Wang family are now Beijing residents, but their ancestors were from Shandong, where drinking is also very common. Once Xu Damao started offering toasts, the three men couldn't stop.

Later on, the three men were practically sworn brothers.

"Da Mao, I agree to your relationship with Min Zhi. And since I agree, it's settled. Now, when do you want to marry Min Zhi?"

Let me tell you, although our Wang family isn't a wealthy one, we can't let our daughter suffer. When Minzhi marries you, you'll see what my dowry will be like.”

When Mr. Wang got so happy after drinking, he immediately wanted to marry Wang Minzhi off.

"Yes, Da Mao. Your drinking habits reflect your character. You drank well today, so I believe you're a good person too. I feel at ease knowing my sister is looking for you. Let me tell you, I have many friends in Beijing. If you ever have any problems you can't handle, come to me, and I'll take care of them for you."

Wang Shusheng thumped his chest loudly.

Three women and Wang Jianguo watched the three men calling each other brothers, speechless. How did this hierarchy even begin?

The meal didn't end until Wang's father and Wang Shusheng crawled under the table.

"Mom, my parents would like to meet with you two. When would be a good time for them?" After making arrangements for the two of them, Xu Damao remembered his parents' instructions.

"We do need to meet them. We've already agreed to your relationship with Minzhi. After meeting with your in-laws, we'll finalize things."

"So, your older brother will be going with the car soon, and it will take him a few days to go back and forth. After he returns, our two families will have a meal together. This time, let's go to your house, how about that?" Wang's mother was a virtuous woman who handled things in an orderly manner.

“Sure, whatever you arrange is fine. I also need to go to the countryside in the next few days to show a movie, so the timing works out perfectly,” Xu Damao replied.

Having stayed long enough, and with the two men already asleep, it was no longer appropriate for Xu Damao to stay any longer, so he prepared to go back.

"Minzhi, go and see Damao off," Wang's mother instructed.

After leaving the house, Xu Damao saw that it was still early, so he suggested that they go for a walk together.

"You've had quite a bit to drink, you're not going to make me fall over, are you?" Wang Minzhi asked cautiously, her expression incredibly cute.

"Don't worry, I can drink another pound of liquor without any problem. Come on, get in the car, I'll take you." Xu Damao was getting a little cocky.

On the way, Xu Damao deliberately ventured into less crowded alleys, occasionally braking to feel the soft, delicate body behind him. Although not drunk, he was quite intoxicated, and Xu Damao's courage grew.

"You're a bad person. Stop doing this, it won't be good if others see." Wang Minzhi was very happy today, her parents were very satisfied with the man she had chosen, so she was being a little indulgent towards Xu Damao.

Xu Damao, recognizing the person's voice, immediately rode his bike to a park, found a secluded grove of trees, and went inside.

"Oh, Da Mao, what's up?" Wang Minzhi asked, feigning reluctance.

Upon hearing that sweet, coquettish voice, Xu Damao could no longer resist and pulled her into his arms. This man, who had been single for decades, had finally found a real woman.

The two held each other the whole time, doing nothing else. Even so, the girl in their arms trembled slightly.

Finally, Wang Minzhi realized it was getting late, so she gently broke free from Xu Damao's embrace.

"It's getting late, I have to go back. Otherwise, my mother will worry."

"Alright, let's continue next time." Xu Damao chuckled.
