Chapter 9: Became the Team Leader

Around 10 a.m., while Xu Damao was trying to curry favor with the radio station, Section Chief Gao came in.

“I knew you’d be here. Come on, let’s go to your office. The appointment document for your team leader has come down, and the apprentice you were assigned to is here too,” Gao Jin said as soon as he came in.

"Xu Damao's already a team leader? Boss, when are you going to appoint me as a team leader too?" Before Xu Damao could even speak, Li Tong started complaining.

In her opinion, Xu Damao was generally unreliable, either loitering around at work or going to the countryside to fool the people. Why should he be promoted to team leader?

This group leader position is equivalent to a section chief, and is a necessary step towards becoming a deputy section chief. Although Xu Damao currently does not have cadre status, it is only a matter of time before he obtains cadre status as the group leader.

She had everything: a privileged family background, professional skills, and everything else, yet Xu Damao surpassed her. This is a classic example of how choices determine destiny, as the saying goes. Xu Damao had no competitors for his position; it was vacant. With the right strategy, she would succeed sooner or later.

The current team leader at the broadcasting station is young, unable to advance or resign, so the others at the station are also stuck. Unless, of course, Li Tong applies for a transfer.

Li Tong was making a fuss, but Wang Minzhi was very happy. Xu Damao had been coming more and more frequently lately, and she had started to soften her stance. Just now, taking advantage of Li Tong's absence, she even agreed to go out with Xu Damao this weekend.

“Li Tong, why can’t I be the group leader? Let me tell you, once I become the group leader, I’ll apply to be transferred to the broadcasting station and keep an eye on you every day,” Xu Damao said.

"Alright, Damao, stop provoking Li Tong. Go to your office, the section chief is waiting for you here." Wang Minzhi said as she pushed Xu Damao out the door.

"Okay. Minzhi, tell me quickly, is there something I don't know about you and this Xu Damao? You keep calling him Damao, Damao. And you're helping him so much." Li Tong deliberately questioned Wang Minzhi after Xu Damao and Gao Jin left the office.

"No way. I was just trying to help you, okay? You always lose to Xu Damao in arguments. By the way, the station manager just delivered a manuscript, you should take a look at it quickly, it's going to air later," Wang Minzhi changed the subject.

Over there, Xu Damao arrived at his office and saw a tall man, about 1.9 meters tall, standing at the door. His robust physique really startled him. In this day and age, due to nutritional problems, it was rare to see someone over 1.9 meters tall, let alone someone so strong.

"Section Chief, where did you find him? He'd be perfect for sports." Xu Damao looked at Gao Jin. In this era, martial arts were valued, and physical fitness was very popular.

“You have good taste, kid. His name is Chen Changqing. He used to play basketball. But he couldn’t make it into the professional team, so he became a forging apprentice at our factory. His father and I are neighbors, and he asked me to find him a skilled job so he can find a wife,” Gao Jin said.

“Hello Changqing. It’s really good to have such a big build to carry the projector; it’ll be safer to go out together in the future. However, the blacksmith’s side is short of a skilled worker. Also, our salary increases here will be much less than those at the blacksmith’s.” Xu Damao said.

"It's nothing. Hello, Team Leader Xu. My dad said my family doesn't need my salary, so he wants me to find a decent job. From now on, this job of carrying the projector will be my responsibility," Chen Changqing replied.

Judging from this, the family is well-off and can support the child. Otherwise, he probably wouldn't have grown so tall and strong.

Xu Damao gave a brief introduction to the work of the projection team; the specifics will have to wait for further practice.

"Da Mao, come to my office for a moment. Chang Qing, stay here for a while. Learn well from your team leader and don't let your father down." After Gao Jin finished speaking, he returned to his office.

"Da Mao, I need to talk to you about something. The factory's HR department has already issued a document stating that you will be the official projection team leader from now on, and you'll receive a monthly allowance of 3 yuan."

"Besides, Changqing was transferred from the blacksmith's shop, which means they'll be short-staffed. But his family has connections, so they managed to keep that position. Changqing's father's idea is to give you that position as a thank you for teaching Changqing," Gao Jin said.

"Thank you for your consideration, Section Chief. Also, isn't this a bit too much?"

Xu Damao knew that the group leader position was only a matter of a document; there was no public announcement or announcement. Apart from personnel and their publicity department, no one else knew about it.

But the projectionist job was in high demand. Xu Damao couldn't decide who to hire, but he could decide whether or not to teach.

As one of the eight key personnel, the projectionist held considerable prestige and enjoyed substantial benefits. Chen's father, worried that Xu Damao was merely hiring a laborer and wouldn't be willing to put in the effort to teach him properly, offered this perk.

The actual operation of replacing a projectionist with a full-time position is just normal, but at least it shows their good intentions. Previously, Xu Damao expressed his willingness to train people through Gao Jin, so he knew that someone would be willing to make the sacrifice, but he didn't expect it to be just a single work position.

“It’s alright, their family doesn’t need this extra job. Just take over and mentor Changqing well, he’s my nephew after all.” With that, Gao Jin handed the letter of introduction directly to Xu Damao.

"Don't worry. I'm about the same age as Changqing, so I don't let him call me master, otherwise it wouldn't sound good. But don't worry, after learning from me for a year or two, Changqing will be able to go out and screen films on his own."

Xu Damao assured him. Actually, film projection is just a window into the world; with someone to guide you, you can get the hang of it after a few tries. But how to handle emergencies and how to perform simple repairs—those are things that require serious learning.

Xu Damao may seem unreliable, but he's been tinkering with these things since he was little, following in his father's footsteps, and he's got a talent for it. Otherwise, the factory wouldn't have let him show the films outside by himself.

After leaving Gao Jin's office, Xu Damao pondered what to do with the workstation. He realized he didn't have any relatives who needed it, so he decided to sell it.

Currently, a regular permanent job on the black market costs at least 800 yuan, while large factories like steel rolling mills charge 1000 yuan or more. There's no way around it; the benefits of large factories are unavailable to smaller ones. After selling the job, he'll have enough money to stockpile some grain.

After some consideration, Xu Damao decided to sell the position to Uncle San. Firstly, Uncle San had the means. Don't let his constant scheming fool you; this old man is actually quite good at saving money. Besides his salary, he might also fish and sell the catch.
