In terms of sheer busyness, the steel rolling mill office is definitely number one. The office has many departments, primarily serving the factory leadership, so the staff are all very careful, afraid of making too much noise and disturbing the leaders.
In the morning, many people hadn't arrived at the University of Science and Technology's office yet, but a young man came early to clean and fetch hot water—a necessary task for every new employee.
The young man's name is Wu Da. He's only been with the company for less than a month. He's not doing many things very well, but he's ambitious and thinks he can become a section chief or factory director after a few years. Yesterday, a colleague from the armed forces department was helping him, but he went home, so Wu Da had to work overtime last night.
Therefore, Wu Da harbored resentment towards the people in the Armed Forces Department. However, after hearing from his section chief that, following communication with the leadership, more people might be coming from there, he felt a little better.
While Wu Da was busy wiping the table, Xu Damao knocked on the door and came in. Seeing that it was a stranger, Wu Da guessed that it was from the Armed Forces Department.
"Are you from the Armed Forces Department?" Wu Da asked.
As an office clerk, Wu Da naturally looked down on the Armed Forces Department, a marginal department, and his tone inevitably carried arrogance.
“Yes, didn’t you send us over to help you?” Xu Damao said.
After Lei Min spoke to him yesterday, he decided to come to the office in person today. Everyone else in the Armed Forces Department is busy and has no free time, so if he doesn't come, who will?
“Oh, right. But you don’t seem like a newcomer. What’s your name?” Wu Da asked.
“My surname is Xu, and I’ve worked at the steel rolling mill for about seven or eight years,” Xu Damao replied.
"Since you're older than me, I'll call you Old Xu. Old Xu, since the Armed Forces Department sent you here, you can help me wipe the table." As someone working in the office, Wu Da conscientiously assigned tasks to people in peripheral departments.
Xu Damao hadn't wiped tables for anyone in quite a few years, but he hadn't lost his skills. He rolled up his sleeves and got to work. And let me tell you, with his long arms and legs, Xu Damao wiped tables much more efficiently than Wu Da.
"Old Xu, after working for so many years, aren't you at the deputy section chief level?"
Seeing that Xu Damao was serious about his work, Wu Da's attitude improved considerably, and he took the initiative to start a conversation.
“I’m not a deputy section chief,” Xu Damao replied.
"Hey, I can tell without even thinking that you're not a deputy section chief. If you were a section-level cadre, you'd be a leader, no matter how small, how could you be assigned to do odd jobs in the office?"
Let me tell you, even though I'm new to this job, I already know that you have to be obedient to your boss to get ahead. Also, you should show your boss some appreciation. You're clearly the kind of person who doesn't know how to do that; you just bury your head in your work.
Before I even started working, my family contacted our section chief and brought him two bottles of good wine. And sure enough, the section chief treated me well, assigning me the task of cleaning the factory manager's and director's offices.
Don't think this is just hard work; many people wouldn't even imagine it. Think about it: you go cleaning every day, and you might occasionally run into the boss. Over time, the boss will get to know you, and when it comes to promotions, they might consider you.
Wu Da probably doesn't have anyone to chat with normally, but when he's with Xu Damao, he talks non-stop, expressing everything he can and can't say.
Xu Damao hadn't chatted so candidly with grassroots employees in a long time, occasionally offering encouragement and prompting conversations, which made Wu Da's desire to express himself even stronger.
The two quickly finished cleaning the office of the director, and then Wu Da took Xu Damao to the office of the director, Zhou Fenglin.
When they finished cleaning Zhou Fenglin's office, many people had already arrived for work. The two left Zhou Fenglin's office and continued on to the office of Deputy Factory Director Qiao Erbao.
As soon as they left, Zhou Fenglin came to the office. He looked at the two people who walked out and felt that one of them looked familiar from behind, but he just couldn't remember who it was.
Since his leg injury, Qiao Erbao has been abandoned by Huang Xian and returned to a state of powerlessness. However, he has not made any progress over the years, and now that he is close to retirement, he has lost the will to continue fighting. He has become much more amiable in his dealings with people and things, which has earned him the affection of many people in the office.
When Wu Da and Xu Damao finished cleaning Qiao Erbao's office, Qiao Erbao arrived. Seeing Xu Damao cleaning for him, Qiao Erbao felt fear; he thought it was a conspiracy against him.
Over the years, he had fought with Xu Damao many times, but he always ended up losing. It was really frustrating to think that a deputy factory director couldn't beat a section chief.
"Xu Damao, what are you doing cleaning my office? Let me tell you, don't try to scam me. I'm retiring in two years." Qiao Erbao said warily.
Xu Damao hadn't expected to run into Qiao Erbao, but he knew what the other man meant from his expression. Thank goodness, Xu Damao really was there to clean.
"Director Qiao, I really just came here to clean. I was called here by the office to do odd jobs, so I came early this morning to wipe tables and sweep the floor. But I've cleaned your office, the department offices, and the director's office as well."
"If you don't believe me, ask Xiao Wu," Xu Damao said sincerely.
Wu Da hadn't expected that Xu Damao was familiar with Factory Director Qiao, but he still nodded, confirming that what Xu Damao said was true.
Hearing Xu Damao's words and Wu Da's nod, Qiao Erbao's uneasy heart calmed down a bit, but he knew that this kid was definitely up to no good and that someone was going to be in trouble.
There's a saying that goes, "The person who knows you best is your enemy." Years ago, to deal with Xu Damao, Qiao Erbao studied him thoroughly, knowing Xu Damao was definitely not a good person. Now, pretending to wipe the table for others, someone else will suffer the consequences.
He knew Xu Damao had been targeted recently, but didn't understand why. However, he knew Xu Damao wouldn't give up so easily and would definitely retaliate one day. Youth is the greatest asset; this kid was already a division-level cadre before he was even 30, and even if he worked his way up to retirement, he could still become a deputy director-general.
"Haha, Xu Damao, you're not being fair. If you want to wipe the table, go to Lao Li's or Lao Yang's office. Why are you wiping it here?"
"I don't care what you do, just don't hurt the innocent. I just want to retire quietly." Qiao Erbao forced a smile.
“Boss, look at what you’re saying. Is this the kind of person you think I, Xu Damao, am? This time, the office needs to borrow people from the Armed Forces Department, and I really can’t spare any manpower. I’m the only one who’s free, so I had no choice but to come here on my own initiative.”
Besides, it's an honor for me to be able to serve the leaders so closely in the office. I've already decided that I'll take advantage of this time in the office to learn from the leaders and improve my personal abilities and skills." Xu Damao spoke as if he were serious.
"Old Joe, what's all the fuss about? I could hear your laughter from far away." As the two were chatting, another person entered the office.
