Chapter 18 Stealing Hearts (3)

As the car stopped, Ruan Qingqing rushed to the window.

But the brief glance just now seemed like Ruan Qingqing's illusion. Luo Pingjiang looked normal. He glanced behind her and frowned, "Get in the car!"

Ruan Qingqing turned around and ran to pick up Doudou. Luo Pingjiang also got out of the car and ran to the eaves almost at the same time as her and took Doudou first.

Although he only had one hand that could be used, he could easily pick up a child of five or six years old. He protected the child tightly, and his tall body shielded the child from all wind and rain. Ruan Qingqing finally felt relieved, and Zeng Xi was so surprised that she almost cried.

Luo Pingjiang put the child in the back seat, Ruan Qingqing and Zeng Xi got in the car one on the left and one on the right. The car door slammed shut, instantly isolating them from all the cold and fierce wind and rain, leaving only safety and warmth.

Luo Pingjiang: "Where are you going?"

Ruan Qingqing: "People's Hospital."

Luo Pingjiang stepped on the accelerator and the car sped out.

In a blink of an eye, we were on the main road. There weren't many cars, but it was still raining heavily. Luo Pingjiang's speed seemed out of place in the traffic flow, and he kept overtaking left and right.

Ruan Qingqing: "You don't have to drive so fast, safety first."

"It's okay. I know my limits."

"Thank you so much, I hope I didn't delay you."

"No. What happened to the child?"

"I have a fever. It had gone down during the day, but it suddenly shot up just now. Antipyretics don't help. We wanted to take a taxi but couldn't."

Luo Pingjiang opened the storage compartment in front, took out a bottle of water and handed it over: "There is only one bottle of water left, give it to the child."

"Thanks."

Ruan Qingqing and Zeng Xi carefully fed the child some water. Luo Pingjiang handed over a paper box. Ruan Qingqing took it and saw that it was soft cotton tissue paper.

He said, "You guys wipe it too."

Ruan Qingqing said again, "Thank you." She drew two cards, handed them to Zeng Xi, and drew one for herself, wiping it slowly.

Luo Pingjiang: "You can lean back and rest for a while, we'll be there soon."

Ruan Qingqing: "Okay, thank you."

His fingers were clasped tightly around the steering wheel, and his jawline moved slightly.

"That's enough! You don't have to keep thanking me."

Ruan Qingqing was stunned. There was actually some anger in his tone, but he didn't know where the anger came from.

There was a crackling rain outside the car, and the sound of vehicles and horns continued. The car became very quiet. Ruan Qingqing looked at the rain curtain outside the car window with an expressionless face.

Zeng Xi poked her gently underneath with her hand and signed: I recognize him, he has been to the center several times to deliver food and donated money once.

Ruan Qingqing: He is Chen Muyun’s cousin.

Zeng Xi: Oh, so he’s one of us. He is so nice.

Zeng Xi: What's wrong? You look sad.

Ruan Qingqing paused.

Zeng Xi: Don’t worry, Doudou will be fine, just need to go to the hospital.

Ruan Qingqing nodded.

When they arrived at the hospital parking lot, Ruan Qingqing was about to tell Luo Pingjiang to go first, but he had already gotten out of the car and took the child from her arms. This time his tone was much softer and his expression was normal: "Go quickly, I'll hold the child."

Ruan Qingqing immediately said: "We can go by ourselves, don't waste your time any more."

Luo Pingjiang glanced at her and said, "Don't delay me. I have nothing else to do."

No one expected that there would be so many people in the emergency room in the middle of the night. Luo Pingjiang handed the child to Ruan Qingqing and went to register himself.

Someone was just leaving, and Zeng Xi was quick to take up two empty seats and called Ruan Qingqing over. After Ruan Qingqing sat down, she subconsciously looked at Luo Pingjiang's back.

He was wearing a black hooded casual jacket today, looking a little empty. His shoulders were slightly wet. He stood at the end of the team, his back tall and straight, and slowly moved forward with the team. After a while, Ruan Qingqing reacted and immediately looked away.

Not long after, Luo Pingjiang came over with the number and medical record and handed them to Ruan Qingqing. Ruan Qingqing looked and saw that there were 20 people waiting in front.

She said, "How much?"

"No, it's only a few dollars."

"Thank you so much today. Why don't you go back first? We still have to wait for a long time. We can do it on our own."

Luo Pingjiang stood beside her without moving, answering the question irrelevantly: "Why don't you call Chen Muyun and ask him to come over to help?"

"He was on a business trip yesterday and won't be back until Sunday. Besides... I don't want to trouble him with everything about our center."

Luo Pingjiang did not comment and said, "You guys take a rest first." Then he left the waiting room.

Zeng Xi: This brother is really a nice person.

Ruan Qingqing: Yes, he has always been a very good person.

Luo Pingjiang seemed to have calculated the time precisely. When two more people arrived at Doudou, he came back with a plastic bag in his hand containing several bottles of water and bread and biscuits.

He handed the plastic bag to Zeng Xi, who was flattered and quickly gestured to express her gratitude. To Ruan Qingqing's surprise, he actually made accurate and beautiful sign language: You're welcome, have it to eat when you're hungry.

Ruan Qingqing suddenly remembered that she and Chen Muyun had been together for more than a year, but he didn't know any sign language. She once wanted to teach him on a whim, but he was not interested and asked what was the point of learning it.

What followed was a period of chaos, with the three of them running around the hospital. See a doctor, pay the fee, get blood tests, pick up medicine, get the results, and finally go to the emergency observation room for infusion.

Luo Pingjiang did almost all the errands by himself, and they only had to look after the children.

He also paid the money in advance. When Ruan Qingqing wanted to transfer the money to him, he did not refuse and said, "I'll give it to you when we're done."

The few beds in the infusion room had long been full, and there were only rows of chairs. Ruan Qingqing was holding her child and receiving an IV drip, while Luo Pingjiang was sitting opposite her.

Zeng Xi leaned in the chair next to her. After all, she was just a child and could not stay up all night, so she fell asleep soon.

The infusion room was silent, with only the occasional sounds of other children crying and parents talking. The rain outside is still pouring down.

Ruan Qingqing whispered, "You can go back and rest. You don't have to stay with us."

Because he lowered his voice, it seemed deeper than usual: "Staying up all night is nothing for someone like me."

"Did you often stay up late in the past?"

"We worked day and night. During the first one or two years after the store opened, we were also very busy."

He said that back then, Ruan Qingqing remembered what Chen Muyun had said, and her eyes slid across his left hand, which looked normal at the moment.

"How did your left hand get injured?"

He raised his left hand, revealing two scars on his wrist: "I was stabbed twice, but I caught the criminal and sentenced him to life imprisonment, so it was worth it."

She looked at him without saying anything.

"It's okay." He said softly, not knowing who he was comforting.

Ruan Qingqing's heart was alerted, and she forced a proper smile on her face: "Fortunately, you are living well now."

"Yes, I'm living a good life now," he said slowly.

Ruan Qingqing lowered her head, touched Doudou's forehead and hands, and was pleasantly surprised: "The temperature seems to have dropped!"

Luo Pingjiang went to borrow a thermometer from the nurse. After taking the temperature, it was 38.3 degrees. Ruan Qingqing breathed a sigh of relief, as it was almost 40 degrees.

She couldn't help but look up and smile at Luo Pingjiang. He smiled too, tilting his head and slightly raising his chin, looking a little smug. Ruan Qingqing looked away.

"How about I hold you while you take a nap?" Luo Pingjiang asked.

Ruan Qingqing: "No, I'm not sleepy at all." As soon as she finished speaking, she sneezed three times. Luo Pingjiang frowned. Although the heater was on in the observation room and such a long time had passed, the wet parts of their clothes had basically dried, but her clothes still looked thin. He took off his coat.

Ruan Qingqing hesitated for a moment and said, "No need! I'm fine, my nose just itched... A-choo!"

"Don't be polite, and don't be disgusted. I just changed it today. Not only for you, but also for the child. Don't let him get cold."

Luo Pingjiang wrapped his coat around her and gently gathered them together, enclosing both her and the child.

Ruan Qingqing could smell the fresh and clean scent of his coat, and he was only wearing a T-shirt, sitting next to her with his long arms casually folded, and he really didn't look cold at all.

Ruan Qingqing couldn't utter a word, but that familiar bitter feeling surged into her heart again. She immediately suppressed the feeling and held it back.

After a while, Luo Pingjiang stood up and said, "I'm going to go out for a walk. If you have anything, call me. The number is..." He gave a string of numbers.

It was the middle of the night, the wind was strong and the rain was heavy. The temperature dropped suddenly. I had been wearing thick clothes, and if I suddenly took them off, even the strongest person would feel cold.

Luo Pingjiang came out of the infusion room and walked forward a little. When he was sure that Ruan Qingqing could no longer see him, he crossed his arms and shivered violently.

Late at night, there was no one in this corridor, only the rain was still hitting the windows and a dim light was hanging overhead.

Luo Pingjiang began to jog back and forth in the corridor, and after a while, his body finally warmed up.

He then leaned against the wall, took out his cell phone, and saw that there was a new friend request on WeChat.

"I'm Ruan Qingqing."

He stared at these words for more than ten seconds and clicked to accept.

Stop at the conversation page.

She didn't speak, and neither did he.

Luo Pingjiang exited the page and saw Chen Muyun’s profile picture at the bottom. He clicked on it and typed in the dialog box: Come to the Fourth Hospital... Halfway through the call, he was distracted for a moment, suddenly deleted the sentence, and put the phone back in his pocket.
