Silver rails extend endlessly into the distance, as if a stairway to an earthly paradise.

On New Year's Day of the new millennium, Xu Lan, the proprietress of the Red Sail Video Store, mysteriously dies. Her body is recovered from a discarded well, along with a videotape recording a murder plan.
