Those qualified to live in military compound are mostly family members of high-ranking officers and some important scientific researchers.
Therefore, security becomes of paramount importance.
Even though it was already night, the guards at the entrance of the compound were still on duty.
As the guards were cautiously surveying the surrounding night, they suddenly noticed Song Mingqian walking towards them alone, and they instantly tensed up in fright.
"Mr. Song, it's so late, why are you out alone?"
Seeing that the guards all looked like they were facing a formidable enemy, Song Mingqian couldn't help but chuckle.
“We’re all grown men, so there’s no danger for us to be out alone. Besides, our identities are confidential; there are very few people in the entire capital who know about them.”
"I can guarantee my safety, so you can rest assured."
Song Mingqian spent a long time trying to comfort them, but instead of relaxing, the guards became even more sweaty.
They knew the habits of these researchers; they were used to a frugal life and were unwilling to be too extravagant.
Not only Song Mingqian, but many senior researchers are like him.
When he occasionally goes out, he wanders around on his own, unwilling to have a bodyguard follow him, feeling it's too conspicuous.
If any of these rare talents were to die unexpectedly, it would be a tremendous loss to the country.
The guard wanted to offer some words of advice, but unfortunately the organization was short-handed.
Since Song Mingqian didn't take the initiative to ask his superiors for more people, they couldn't say much and had no choice but to open the door and let him in.
"It's getting late, Mr. Song, you should go back and rest early."
"Okay, you've all worked hard too."
After greeting several guards, Song Mingqian walked along the road inside the military compound.
Although it was already evening, it was still hot, and many family members were strolling around the compound to cool off.
Many women brought their children to play in the courtyard square. The children's clear laughter was as melodious and pleasant as silver bells.
Song Mingqian unconsciously slowed his pace, staring blankly at the harmonious and loving scenes before him.
Suddenly, it occurred to me that their family was like this many years ago.
Every summer, whenever he's home, he'll take his wife and daughter out to play after dinner.
He would buy his beloved daughter a paper windmill, and watching the little girl in her floral dress smile sweetly at him, he would mumble a few words:
"Thank you, Daddy!"
That scene was so similar to what was happening before my eyes.
Song Mingqian couldn't help but immerse himself in the story. Watching the children jumping around in the square, he felt as if he had traveled back in time.
One wave of people walked past him, and for a moment, he seemed to see a little girl in a floral dress running towards him with light, bouncy steps.
"dad!"
Song Mingqian's hands, hanging limply at his sides, began to tremble uncontrollably.
He watched that small figure run closer and closer to him, and almost couldn't help but reach out and hug her.
The little girl brushed past him at that moment and ran into the arms of the person behind him.
"Dad, why are you walking so fast? I can't keep up with you!"
Her sweet and gentle voice is simply irresistible.
A soldier patted his daughter's head affectionately, then looked up at Song Mingqian shyly and said:
"My daughter has a rather mischievous personality. I'm sorry, Mr. Song, did I scare you?"
Song Mingqian remained in the same position as before.
After an unknown amount of time, he stiffly withdrew his hand, like a rusty robot, and mechanically shook his head.
"It's okay, your daughter is very cute."
The soldier couldn't help but smile, and proudly picked up his daughter, lifting her above his head so she could sit on his shoulders.
"Sweetie, what are you standing there for? Hurry up and call for help."
The little girl gripped her father's epaulets firmly with both hands, her gaze towards Song Mingqian filled with curiosity.
But she wasn't shy at all; she called out to him sweetly:
"Hello, Uncle Song."
That beautiful and fragile dream, like a bubble, shattered in the blink of an eye.
Looking at the warm and harmonious scene between the father and daughter in front of him, Song Mingqian felt an unbearable heartache.
After giving a hasty reply, he made up an excuse and left as if fleeing.
When the night wind blew, my cheeks felt icy cold.
Song Mingqian subconsciously reached up and touched his face, only then realizing that he had unknowingly shed tears.
"It's getting windy, we should go back and rest early."
He murmured to himself, it was unclear whether he was speaking to someone else or to himself.
But his steps quickened, as if he had some unbearable pain in his back that made him want to escape far away.
Walk past the auditorium, then turn a few corners, and you'll be home.
Just as Song Mingqian let out a breath, he saw a figure walking towards him on the side path.
He paused, and the next second he saw Lin Banxia gracefully approaching from another direction.
She looked like she had just finished a performance, with her face still covered in exquisite makeup.
A fitted long dress accentuated her slender figure, and her half-up hairstyle fell over her shoulders, adding a touch of elegance to her overall look.
Lin Banxia now is just as calm and composed as she was when we first met in our youth, and her beauty remains unchanged.
Song Mingqian's feelings were extremely complicated in an instant, with both the joy of reunion and the shame of not daring to face her.
Unexpectedly, she also lived in the military compound. That's right, now she and he are the same, but their identities and missions are different from back then.
