Since the matter could no longer be concealed, Shen Zhihuan remained silent for a moment before confronting them in as calm a tone as possible.
"Shen Yongcai and Fang Qiaolan did do some bad things to me, but that's all in the past."
"I will have no further involvement with them."
Grandpa Xie and Grandma Xie vaguely sensed something was amiss from her words, but considering Shen Zhihuan's feelings and seeing that she didn't choose to speak directly, they didn't insist on asking further.
"From both a moral and logical standpoint, we should let you stay."
Grandpa Xie emphasized, "Back then, Old Shen saved me many times on the battlefield, and I always talked about repaying him."
“Zhihuan, you are his granddaughter. I already feel guilty for not being able to protect you in the past. Now you don’t even have a place to live. If I don’t let you stay at home, I will feel guilty to death.”
In order to completely dispel Shen Zhihuan's concerns, Old Master Xie even made some harsh remarks.
"Zhihuan, please give me a chance. If we don't repay this kindness, then the Xie family will truly be ungrateful."
The old man's scolding made Shen Zhihuan feel immense pressure.
She knew that Grandpa Xie said these things entirely for her own good, but that was just her personality; she never liked to trouble others.
They felt guilty even for having a meal with me, let alone staying overnight.
Shen Zhihuan bit her lip, extremely hesitant, but then Old Madam Xie joined in persuading her.
"Zhihuan, just listen to Lao Xie this once."
“We’re both so old, practically half-buried in the ground. We could be gone any day now. Just consider this as fulfilling one of our wishes.”
The couple responded in unison, putting on a two-person act.
"I hope you can give this marriage a good consideration. This marriage is definitely what Old Master Shen would like to see."
“Zhihuan, I hope you can give Lanshen a chance. Don’t rush to refuse. There’s still plenty of time.”
Grandpa Xie nodded repeatedly: "That's right, Zhihuan, you should take this opportunity to stay here and try getting along with Lan Shen first."
"Wait a week... no, let's stay for half a month first. During this time, Lanshen Rehabilitation will need your guidance."
“That guy surnamed Huang really scared us two old folks today. We don’t feel at ease if you’re not here, Zhihuan.”
Shen Zhihuan was both amused and exasperated. Since the two elders had said so, it would seem rather unreasonable of her not to agree.
Three pairs of expectant eyes looked over, and Shen Zhihuan hesitated.
A familiar voice suddenly rang out from outside the courtyard gate.
"Zhihuan, are you doing alright in there?"
Is there anything we can help you with?
It sounds like the voices of Sister Liu and Aunt Zhang.
Shen Zhihuan was taken aback, and quickly opened the door to see that it really was them.
"Aunt Liu, Grandma Zhang, you haven't left yet?"
The two nodded, and seeing that Shen Zhihuan was alright, they breathed a sigh of relief.
"We were thinking that it's usually the parents who handle things like breaking off an engagement."
“You’re just a young girl, and now you’ve cut off all ties with your family. No one will be there to support you.”
"We're worried you might run into trouble that you can't solve. We've watched you grow up, so we're waiting here for you to see if we can help."
They were originally just waiting at the entrance of the alley.
They were surprised that Shen Zhihuan hadn't come out for so long, and they had originally planned to knock on the door and ask her about it.
Before they could even get close, several People's Liberation Army soldiers suddenly appeared.
"Oh dear, that really scared us!"
As she spoke, Aunt Zhang patted her chest.
"Those PLA soldiers jumped straight out of the car, rushed into the yard, and didn't come out."
“We thought something serious had happened to you, but we didn’t dare interfere with the People’s Liberation Army’s work. We had no other choice but to shout outside the courtyard.”
As they talked, the two looked back and forth at Shen Zhihuan and the Xie family, who were standing beside them with friendly expressions.
"But it seems like everything's alright now?"
Grandpa Xie smiled and waved his hand.
“It’s alright, it’s alright. Those PLA soldiers are my grandson’s comrades-in-arms. They’re always efficient and have a strong sense of time, which is why they rushed in.”
The fewer people who know about this enemy spy affair, the better.
Grandma Xie smiled, her eyes crinkling, and stepped forward to hold Shen Zhihuan's hand. She briefly explained that they were old acquaintances of Grandpa Shen and that they wanted her to stay at their home for a while.
Upon hearing this, and seeing that the Xie family elders truly adored Shen Zhihuan, Sister-in-law Liu and Aunt Zhang felt gratified.
This also relieved Shen Zhihuan.
"So you and Mr. Shen are old acquaintances, that's wonderful!"
A friend of Mr. Shen, there's no mistake!
“We were worried before… Alas, Zhihuan has such a hard life. From childhood to adulthood, only the Shen couple have ever loved her.”
"It's a pity that Old Master Shen passed away so early, and Zhihuan has been all alone all these years, otherwise she wouldn't have suffered so much..."
Although they didn't spend every day with Shen Zhihuan.
But as neighbors, what they hear and see every day is enough to make them feel extremely sorry for Chen Zhihuan.
Thinking about what Shen Zhihuan has gone through over the years, both of them couldn't help but feel a lump in their throats.
Upon hearing this, Old Xie was taken aback, his smile vanished instantly, and he frowned.
"What do you mean by that? After Old Shen passed away, Zhihuan didn't have a good life in the Shen family?"
Sister-in-law Liu and Aunt Zhang exchanged a glance and then sighed.
There are too many things from the past to tell, and I don't know where to begin.
They then told Grandpa Xie everything that had happened that day.
