Shen Zhihuan snapped out of her daze at that moment and blinked.
Granddaughter-in-law, getting married?
perhaps……
Shen Zhihuan's eyes lit up slightly as an idea formed in her mind.
She composed herself and looked at the Xie family members.
"It is said that one should repay a life-saving favor with one's own body. It was indeed Xie Lanshen who saved me first."
"Without him, I might not be who I am today, so..."
The old man, who had just looked dejected, suddenly perked up, his cloudy eyes brightening as he looked over in disbelief.
Shen Zhihuan and Grandpa Xie exchanged a glance and smiled sweetly.
“If Xie Lanshen doesn’t object, it’s feasible for us to get engaged.”
Anyway, she's not a young girl in her early twenties who's just starting to experience love; she's been through marriage.
Marriage is just about the mundane things like daily necessities; it's not that interesting.
To put it simply, it's a contract between two families, where they support each other.
The Xie family treated her well, and she had severed ties with the Shen family, so she had no worries about the future.
Anyway, her goal is already set, and in the end she will go to the front line with him and fight side by side.
After they get married, with her personally overseeing things, she refuses to believe that anyone will have the extraordinary ability to use such underhanded tricks to send him to the King of Hell right under her nose!
This way, she could repay the Xie family for taking her in and also fulfill her wish to take care of Xie Lanshen, which would be killing two birds with one stone.
Upon hearing Shen Zhihuan's sudden change of heart, Grandpa Xie, who had given up hope, was initially incredulous, but then overjoyed and nodded repeatedly.
"Good, good, that's wonderful, what a good child!"
"Grandpa would be so happy to have you as his granddaughter-in-law that he'd wake up laughing in his dreams!"
He happily picked up his wine glass, turned around, and found that no one at the table could drink.
But this did not dampen his spirits.
The old man raised his head and downed the entire glass of medicinal wine in one gulp.
One drink wasn't enough, so he poured himself another.
"Today is such a wonderful day! I'm so happy! I must eat more and remember this day forever!"
He talked while wolfing down a bowl of rice.
While eating, she kept asking, "Did they add honey to this rice today? It's so sweet!"
After finishing two bowls, the old man excitedly got up, wanting to have another bowl, but was quickly stopped by Mrs. Xie.
Grandma Xie laughed and scolded, "Are you trying to kill yourself by eating so much?"
"You just want to stuff yourself to death at this dinner table so we'll remember this day forever, right?"
Grandpa Xie scratched his head and chuckled.
"You flatter me, you flatter me."
His excited yet embarrassed expression successfully amused everyone at the table once again.
As she laughed, Sister Liu looked at the kind and interesting family and patted Shen Zhihuan's leg under the table.
Shen Zhihuan turned to meet her gaze, and in her smiling, loving, and gentle eyes, she discerned a sense of complete reassurance.
In the shifting gaze, it was as if he were subtly entrusting his daughter to the Xie family.
This feeling is both strange and familiar.
In her previous life, she appeared countless times in Shen Zhihuan's unrealized imagination.
Shen Zhihuan never expected that the kindness and warmth that her mother, Fang Qiaolan, had never shown her, would be felt by these two neighbors who had watched her grow up.
Shen Zhihuan suddenly felt a little regretful. After she got married in her previous life, she moved away so cleanly and neatly without ever coming back to visit them.
Fortunately, fate gave her a second chance.
Shen Zhihuan grasped their hands that were resting on her knees and slowly revealed a smile.
Gentle yet firm.
After dinner, Sister-in-law Liu, Aunt Zhang, and the other two had to say goodbye and leave.
Shen Zhihuan escorted them all the way to the alley entrance and waved goodbye to them.
"Aunt Liu, Grandma Zhang, I'll come visit you whenever I have time. Please take good care of yourselves!"
Sister Liu and Aunt Zhang smiled and nodded in agreement. Even after getting into the car, they kept looking back through the small rear window and waving at her.
"Zhihuan, you must take good care of yourself too!"
"Don't hesitate to come to us if you need anything!"
Shen Zhihuan agreed to all of their requests and watched them leave.
After returning, Shen Zhihuan first checked Xie Lanshen's wound.
It was already night, and the windows of Xie Lanshen's room were closed, with the faint scent of the medicine she had given him that afternoon lingering in the air.
Xie Lanshen remained lying flat on the bed, his hands neatly folded in front of his chest even in his drowsy state, his shirt buttoned up to below his Adam's apple.
The inherent coldness in his face was somewhat diluted by his paleness and calmness.
Although his posture was relaxed, one could still vaguely discern the hard work and perseverance of a soldier from the muscular physique honed over years of training.
Shen Zhihuan stood quietly by the bed and couldn't help but take a few more glances.
Even when sick and bedridden, he lies so properly. Has the rules of standing, sitting, and lying down in the military been engraved into his genes?
No wonder, Master used to love to talk about how outstanding Xie Lanshen was, how self-disciplined he was, and how strict he was with himself.
What Master especially liked to talk about was how flexible his tactics were and how amazing his ability to adapt to changing circumstances was during battles.
Along with the constant musings, there was also that group photo.
Master would always hold that group photo, and as he spoke, he couldn't help but shed tears, lamenting that heaven was jealous of talent, causing such a good soldier to pass away so suddenly.
My master always kept that photo in his pocket, carrying it with him at all times, and preserved it for many years.
Shen Zhihuan has watched it several times.
But by the time she saw it, the photo had been worn and become somewhat blurry.
