Ye Yuanzhang felt as if he was holding an ice cube, which was cold to the touch.
He quickly said, "Comrade Lin, it's so cold, thank you for taking my niece here. Come inside and warm yourself up."
Lin Tao was shivering with cold and agreed without hesitation.
After entering the house, Ye Yuanzhang immediately moved a small stool and asked Lin Tao to sit next to the mud stove at the door.
There was a fire burning in the stove, and a large steamer was placed on it, with white steam and smoke coming out of it.
Aunt Bai Qiu came out of the house wearing an apron, took out an enamel teacup, poured a cup of hot water and handed it to Lin Tao, while reminding him: "Comrade Lin, the water is a little hot. Hold the teacup to warm your hands first and drink it later."
"Okay, thank you Aunt Ye."
Lin Tao was very polite, and Bai Qiu had a good impression of him, so he smiled and said, "I steamed some sweet bean buns yesterday, and they'll be ready soon. Comrade Lin, please stay for lunch."
"No, no, I have something to do in the afternoon and have to rush back to the company at noon." Lin Tao politely declined.
Qiu Bai didn't force her to stay, and said with a smile: "Okay, the bean curd will be out of the pot soon. Auntie will pack you two and you can try them."
Lin Tao: "Thank you, auntie."
Qiu Bai turned to Yun Qiao and asked, "Yun Qiao, how many days can you stay home?"
Yun Qiao held up two fingers and said, "The company commander only gave me two days off. I have to leave tomorrow afternoon."
"Two days is enough. Let your uncle take you back tomorrow afternoon." Bai Qiu said.
Lin Tao drank a cup of hot water to warm himself up, exchanged a few words with Uncle Ye, and then said goodbye.
As the steamed buns were cooked, Bai Qiu found a piece of wax paper used to wrap pastries, opened the lid of the pot, and wrapped two steamed buns in the wax paper. He ran after Lin Tao and stuffed them into his arms: "Comrade Lin, thank you for taking our Yun Qiao for a ride. Take these two steamed buns while they're hot."
"Aunt, you are too polite."
Yun Qiao and his uncle and aunt saw Lin Tao off together.
"Goodbye, Comrade Ye. Goodbye, Uncle Ye and Aunt Ye." Lin Tao jumped onto the carriage, waved the whip, and drove away.
Back in the house, Bai Qiu filled a half-basin with warm water and asked Yun Qiao to wash her hands. She then casually picked up a sweet bean bun and handed it to Yun Qiao, saying, "Yun Qiao, try some of Auntie's steamed bean buns. They're made with two-grain flour wrappers, and the filling is steamed and crushed red beans, with a lot of sugar added. Try it, it's delicious."
Yun Qiao took a bite and it tasted very good.
The dough is fermented just right and is soft in the mouth. The red beans inside are not very finely ground and still retain some granularity. It is soft, sticky and especially sweet.
"It's delicious." Yun Qiao praised.
"If it tastes good, eat more. Bring a few more back when you go back. Auntie steams a lot." Bai Qiu looked at Yun Qiao with a smile, his gentle eyes full of kindness.
While eating, Yun Qiao asked, "Aunt, where are Kang Ning and Yuan Qing?"
"Kangning took Yuanqing to visit Aunt Feng's house. Aunt Feng's eldest son was studying in high school in the commune. He came back from vacation with a lot of books. The two children were completely fascinated by him. They ran to her house every day and couldn't be pulled back."
As Bai Qiu spoke, he handed a bean bun to Ye Yuanzhang and said to him, "Yuanzhang, go to Aunt Feng's house and call Kang Ning and Qing Yuan over. Tell them that Sister Yun Qiao is here to see them and ask them to come back quickly and not dawdle."
Ye Yuanzhang responded and went out while eating bean buns.
Yun Qiao suddenly remembered something and asked, "Aunt, Kangning is already eight years old. It's time for her to go to school. When are you and uncle going to send her to school?"
