Chapter 41: Reminiscing (1/2)

Chapter 41 Reminiscing

Yun Qiao was only four years old when Baiqiu married Ye Yuanzhang in 1955. After Ye Yuantuo died and Gu Tingyu remarried, it was Baiqiu, her aunt, who took over her burden and played the role of "mother" in her childhood.

Although she is called aunt, she is actually more like her mother than Gu Tingyu, her mother.

Yun Qiao has deep feelings for her.

Bai Qiu also had deep feelings for Yun Qiao. She raised Yun Qiao single-handedly and had long regarded Yun Qiao as her own child.

Bai Qiu hugged Yun Qiao's shoulders and said, "My dear Qiao Qiao, you've cried like a kitten. Hurry up and wipe it off. It makes Auntie sad to see you."

Yun Qiao nodded, took Bai Qiu's handkerchief and wiped her tears away. She raised her eyes and met He Tingjun's smiling black eyes.

Her face turned red, and she felt embarrassed in front of outsiders. She turned her head and buried her head in Bai Qiu's arms and refused to come out.

When Bai Qiu's chest was buried by her, he seemed to see the naughty look of the little girl in his memory again.

She wanted to laugh, but was afraid her shy niece would get embarrassed, so she laughed it off and changed the subject: "Tingjun, it's cold outside. Don't stand outside. Come inside and warm up."

"good."

He Tingjun agreed with a smile and went into the house carrying his things.

Bai Qiu followed behind, holding Yun Qiao's hand, and said with some complaints, "Tingjun, I've told you several times before, just come here, don't bring so many things every time. We are self-sufficient here, we don't lack anything."

He Tingjun didn't respond, only explaining, "There were only two bags in total. One was brought by Yun Qiao, and the other was the machine gun that the logging team asked Brother Yuan Zhang to ask me to buy in Shanghai. I didn't bring much in total."

"Tingjun, sit down." Bai Qiu brought a small stool for He Tingjun, then looked at Yunqiao and said, "Yunqiao, uncle and aunt don't want you to bring anything. You're still a child, just take care of yourself."

Yun Qiao didn't respond, but directly took Bai Qiu's arm and said, "Aunt, take a look at what I brought first, it's not too late to talk to me later!"

"Okay, okay, let me take a look first."

Yun Qiao opened the package and first took out the 90% new military coat he had bought from the thrift store. He then pulled out a stack of folded cloth from inside and showed it to Bai Qiu like a treasure: "Aunt, look at this cloth I bought! How is it? It's very good, right?"

"That's so much!" Bai Qiuqing couldn't help but take a step forward, took the cloth in his hands, looked at it back and forth, and said happily, "It must be at least forty or fifty feet."

Yun Qiao: "About ten feet in total."

Bai Qiu took a breath of cold air.

She and Ye Yuanzhang had been in Northeast China for two years. With two adults and two children, they only received 20 feet of cloth coupons in total in those two years, which was not enough to make cotton-padded jackets for the two children in winter.

As a result, the little niece could make a move of more than ten feet, and it was all made of fine cotton cloth, which really scared Bai Qiu.

She was afraid that her niece might take the wrong path, so she put down the cloth in her hand and asked her seriously, "Yun Qiao, tell me honestly, where did you get so much cloth?"

"Don't worry, Auntie. I bought all of this from legitimate channels. There's no risk." Yun Qiao explained, "These are defective fabrics. No fabric coupons are needed."

"Defective cloth isn't easy to buy." Bai Qiu wasn't easily fooled. "How come I didn't know your family had this connection?"

"I rented out our house for me," Yun Qiao said honestly. "Ten dollars a month, I rented it to this cloth salesman in the department store."

"That makes sense." Bai Qiu breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "How many rooms have been rented out?"

"They've all been rented out, including your and your uncle's room." Yun Qiao shrank his neck and asked her, "Aunt, you won't blame me, will you?"
