When I was reading, time always flew by and before I knew it, it was time to make lunch.
Feng Juan was just about to ask Yun Qiao what he wanted to eat for lunch when she heard a knock on the door.
"Who is it?"
"Auntie, it's me, Gao Qian."
Feng Juan put down the sewing basket, stood up, opened her umbrella and went to open the door.
The courtyard gate opened, and Gao Qian was outside, also holding an umbrella.
"Xiao Gao, it's raining so hard, why are you here? Come in quickly."
She was wearing a green military uniform, which was wet from the rain below the knees, making it an even darker dark green. But she didn't care and smiled. "Auntie, I'm here to bring you some fish. You can just take it home. I have to go home to cook, so I won't go in." Gao Qian said, picking up the fish in her hand.
Only then did Feng Juan realize that she was holding a large carp weighing about fifty or sixty centimeters in her hand.
"Such a big fish!" Feng Juan caught it in amazement and asked, "Where did you get it from?"
"My old Shao was on vacation today, but he couldn't stay idle even on a rainy day, so he put on his raincoat and went for a stroll. Luckily, he happened to be strolling by the bridge outside the base when the river was flooded. The fish in the river were starving, so they lay on their stomachs on the surface, rushing towards the bridge. They were blocked by the reeds beside the bridge, so he picked up a long stick and scooped the fish up to the riverside. In a short while, he caught seven or eight fish, all this big."
Feng Juan exclaimed, "Oh my, he's really lucky. This fish just flew right in front of him, and he couldn't refuse it even if he wanted to."
"Yes, my husband Shao said so too. It's time for us to eat fish." Gao Qian smiled and said, "I kept two fish at home. The others gave them to the neighbors. This one is for your family. You are a good cook. It's a perfect dish for Yun Qiao at noon."
Feng Juan smiled and thanked him, "Then thank your family member, Comrade Shao, for us. Xiao Gao, wait a moment. This fish must weigh about ten pounds. If you buy it outside, it will cost at least two yuan. We can't take it from you. I'll get you something else."
Feng Juan said, picking up the fish and going back into the house. Gao Qian called out from behind, "No need! Auntie, no need. I don't want it. It was something I got, and we don't have any money to pay for it. I'm leaving now, please don't take anything."
Gao Qian left with an umbrella. When Feng Juan put the fish in the kitchen and came out with a bag of cakes, Gao Qian had already disappeared and could not be caught up with.
"Xiao Gao walked too fast." Feng Juan had no choice but to put the pastries back.
Yun Qiao heard the noise, closed the book, walked out of the room, and asked her, "Mom, who's here?"
"It's Xiao Gao, here to bring us some fish." Feng Juan took Yun Qiao to the kitchen to look at the fish. "Here, this is it. Isn't it big?"
Yun Qiao nodded: "Big. This fish must weigh more than ten pounds."
"Almost." Feng Juan said: "Xiao Gao gave me such a big fish. I wanted to give her something, but she didn't want it. She ran away so fast that I couldn't catch up with her."
Yun Qiao said, "Sister Xiao Gao is a righteous person."
"She's so kind, we can't let her down." Feng Juan said, "We still have a pound of peach cakes at home. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, you can bring them to her on your way to work and say they're for her children. That way she'll accept them."
Yun Qiao responded, "Okay."
Then he asked, "This fish is so big, you can't finish it in one meal, right?"
"With just the three of us, we definitely won't be able to finish the meal." Feng Juan thought for a moment and said, "Call your brother over for lunch, and then have him go to the art troupe to invite Comrade Yan Jingwan to see if she's willing to come home. They have a mutual affection, but there's no progress. There must be something missing. They're confused, and as family members, we can at least help them with some advice."
Feng Juan had already made up her mind. Carp has an earthy smell and can't be steamed. Since she had tofu and sauerkraut at home, she decided to make a casserole for lunch, cooking fish head, chopped peppers, and tofu. She'd make sauerkraut fish with half the carp and sauerkraut, and scrape the other half to make fish balls with starch for fish ball soup.
In this way, there are five people in total, and one fish can almost be eaten.
