After dinner, it started to get dark outside and a drizzle began to fall, making the air seem like it was filled with a layer of fog, making it difficult to see the road ahead.
Qin Zheng held up his umbrella and turned his head to look at Yan Jingwan: "It's getting dark, shall I take you home?"
Yan Jingwan nodded.
There is no electricity in the camp, and nighttime lighting depends entirely on lanterns and torches. Except for the disaster relief officers and soldiers, other personnel do not leave the tents at night unless necessary.
There was only one umbrella for the two of them, so Qin Zheng tilted most of the umbrella towards Yan Jingwan, while half of his shoulder was wet by the rain.
Yan Jingwan looked at the rain on his arm and leaned towards his side without making a sound.
Their bodies moved closer, shoulders touching, and Yan Jingwan's rare movement made Qin Zheng's heart beat like a drum.
"Yan Jingwan." Qin Zheng suddenly stopped and called her.
"Hmm?" Yan Jingwan turned her head.
Qin Zheng said: "Do you want to try it with me?"
The sound of rain gradually grew louder, covering up the nervous heartbeat.
Qin Zheng mustered up his courage: "We can keep it secret from the outside world. If you still feel it's not suitable after trying it, I won't bother you anymore."
Yan Jingwan's breathing stagnated slightly, and she subconsciously clenched her hands. Her nails, which had not been cut for a long time, left finger marks on her palms, but she didn't feel any pain at all.
She looked at Qin Zheng and was speechless for a moment.
Yan Jingwan didn't say anything, and Qin Zheng felt a little disappointed.
He didn't want to force her to make a decision immediately, so he lowered his eyes and spoke again: "I'm sorry, I was abrupt today. If you feel you can't answer, you can go back and think about it first. I can wait. It's getting late. If you go any later, you won't be able to see the road clearly. I'll take you back."
Qin Zheng turned around and made a move to move forward.
Yan Jingwan grabbed his forearm and said, "Qin Zheng, wait a minute."
Qin Zheng turned around, a glimmer of anticipation in his eyes.
"You have something to tell me?"
"Um."
Yan Jingwan nodded hesitantly. She pursed her lips and found her voice after a long while. She said, "Qin Zheng, after escaping death once, I don't want to say that I have no feelings for you anymore. But, I'm not as stupid as you think."
"Don't think I'm any better just because I'm the commander's daughter. I was actually driven here. I'm the abandoned child of the Yan family. Marrying me won't help you in any way. In fact, you might even get into trouble because of me, and your future will be cut short. Even so, are you willing to do that?"
Qin Zheng smiled. He shook Yan Jingwan's hand and said, "I like you as a person. I have liked you since the first time I saw you. No matter whose daughter you are, I like you."
"Jingwan, I don't care about any help, nor am I afraid of getting into trouble."
"I joined the army at the age of ten, and this year marks a full ten years. Throughout my half-life military career, I've never relied on anyone. Every step forward has been the result of my own hard work. All the medals I've received were earned through hard work. I wouldn't say that my future has come to an end just because I married someone."
"Trust me, I can protect you from the wind and rain."
Yan Jingwan was shocked and her eyes gradually became moist.
She had never been firmly chosen by anyone, so she no longer expected it, nor did she dare to expect it. At this moment, she felt that her heart was being filled up bit by bit.
Qin Zheng gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, "Don't cry, it hurts me if you do this."
The rain was still falling, and Yan Jingwan cried harder and harder, as if she wanted to cry out all the grievances she had suffered in the past twenty years.
Qin Zheng felt distressed and helpless. He raised his hand to wipe her tears, but he couldn't wipe them away in time.
Yan Jingwan suddenly raised her hand and grabbed his hand, saying, "Qin Zheng, will you marry me?"
"What did you say?" Qin Zheng thought he was hallucinating. He looked at Yan Jingwan in disbelief, his heart beating so fast that it seemed like it was about to jump out of his chest.
Yan Jingwan looked at him, the corners of her lips slightly curled up.
This was the first time that someone had firmly chosen her, and she had confirmed many times that he would not leave. Yan Jingwan didn't want to disappoint Qin Zheng again, and didn't want to make him feel disappointed again.
So, this time she stopped saying one thing and thought another. She followed her inner voice and said to him, "Qin Zheng, marry me. I want to marry you."
This time Qin Zheng heard it clearly.
The heavy rain soaked his back, but he seemed unaware and smiled, "Hey, let's get married."
