Chapter 5: Relationships
After leaving the neighborhood youth league office, Yun Qiao went directly to a state-owned restaurant not far away.
Probably due to edema, she felt very weak and powerless, and even had no energy to walk. She was also very hungry and was afraid that if she didn't eat, she would faint on the road.
It was just eleven o'clock, not yet lunchtime, and the workers and cadres had not yet left work. The state-owned restaurant was deserted. Two women dressed as waitresses were sitting in a window seat chatting. One was young, the other older, probably in her forties.
Seeing someone coming, the older waiter sat still, and the younger waiter hesitated for half a minute before reluctantly standing up and coming over to greet Yun Qiao: "What do you want to eat?"
Yun Qiao stood under the wooden board reading "Today's Supply" for a long time before he took out a 1-liang grain coupon and a 1-liang meat coupon from his pocket and handed them to the waiter: "1-liang rice and a serving of braised pork."
"Six."
Yun Qiao paid the money and the ticket, and the waitress raised her chin towards her and said, "Wait."
Yun Qiao's stomach was growling with hunger, and he didn't care about the waitress's attitude. He just found a seat and sat down.
These days, waiters in state-owned restaurants are one of the "Eight Major Staffs," with iron rice bowls and a lot of pride.
Fortunately, the chef of the restaurant is very good at cooking. A bowl of braised pork is fat but not greasy, soft and tasty. Although there is less meat and more potatoes, the flavor is well controlled. The rich soup wraps the big crimson pieces of meat and golden potatoes, and there are two quail eggs fried with tiger skins in it. It is really too sweet if it is a little more, and tasteless if it is a little less. It is amazing after one bite.
Yun Qiao was already starving, and she could have swallowed a mixed-flour steamed bun in one gulp, let alone a bowl of delicious braised pork.
A bowl of meat and two tablespoons of rice were devoured by her in no time. She even mixed the gravy into the rice, leaving not a single bite behind.
After putting down her bowl and chopsticks, she leaned back and couldn't help burping.
The burp was quite loud, attracting the attention of the waitress next to him.
Yun Qiao subconsciously covered his throat and smiled at her a little embarrassedly, but the next second his throat twitched and he burped again.
The waitress rolled her eyes in disgust, "You poor bastard, you have no manners."
? ?
"No, comrade, I just burped. How can that be considered uncivilized? And words like 'poor bastard', are you allowed to say such things casually? For a waiter like you, your words are too rude."
The waitress glanced at the bowl and plate she had eaten clean and snorted contemptuously. "So what? I told you. You ate every last grain of rice and even drank the broth. You'd be better off eating like that if you died of starvation. Isn't that shabby?"
Yun Qiao had no intention of arguing with the waitress. After all, she was only here once, and she didn't know when she would be back next time. She was about to go to the countryside, so she preferred to keep things simple.
But the waitress's behavior really irritated her!
"Yes, I ate every grain of rice and even poured all the broth into the rice. But is that a problem? Great men have said that corruption and waste are both great crimes! Cherishing food is everyone's responsibility! I ate every grain of food, which shows my respect for food!"
"As for hiccups, it's a natural behavior. Sometimes you can't help it. Can you say you've never hiccupped?"
Hearing Yun Qiao mention the great man, the waitress was speechless. She couldn't just retort that what the great man said was wrong.
Her face turned pale and red, and she choked up as she stubbornly said, "I have burped before, but that was only at home. I'm not like you, a low-brow person. I never burp in public! Even if I wanted to, I would just hold it in! But you, on the other hand, burped so loudly that it was deafening, and you're still so shameless as to make a scene here! You just have no manners! And can't you say you have no manners?"
"Yes. Not allowed to say."
"If you were outside, on the street, not wearing this uniform, you could say whatever you wanted. But you're in a restaurant, you're a waiter, you're a restaurant employee, you're on the government payroll, and it's your duty to serve the people. So you can't wear this uniform and attack the people who eat at your restaurant."
Yun Qiao stared at the waitress's face and said firmly, "You should apologize to me."
