Chapter 63 Building a New House
At half past one, Captain Yang arrived at the educated youth compound on time and began to announce their task for the next few days - to build a new dormitory.
The address had already been chosen, in the northeast corner of the educated youth compound. There happened to be a vacant lot there, a spot that had been reserved since the educated youth compound was first established.
The company's original plan for the educated youth compound was to have a row of five large bungalows, with two east and west wing rooms. The west wing was used as a kitchen and bathroom, and the east wing was used as a storage room for various work tools. Finally, a row of roofed men's and women's toilets were built in the southwest corner of the entrance to prevent the educated youth from being exposed to rain and snow when using the toilet.
The company had a good plan, but they had no money. So when the first group of educated youth arrived, they only built two large thatched houses, one for the men and one for the women.
The area where the east and west wing rooms were located is still an empty space. The utility room and the washroom are simple thatched huts made of wood. There is no kitchen because the educated youths do not cook and eat in the canteen.
The toilets were even more rudimentary, lacking even proper walls, let alone a roof. They were simply a series of wooden shelves tied together with corn stalks, forming a shelter. Behind the shelves were several squatting pits, lined with bricks for easy access.
In short, the educated youth compound is still far from what was originally planned and will take several more years to build.
After Captain Yang finished his speech, he began to distribute tools to the new and old educated youth.
Yun Qiao was assigned a shovel and her task was to dig the foundation. The foundation line had already been marked with lime, so Yun Qiao only had to dig down in the small area allocated to her.
Chen Fengxia was assigned a carrying basket, and her task was to transport the excavated soil out and pile it in the southeast corner of the courtyard. After the foundation was dug, it would be used as mud when building the house.
The two of them happened to be a team. Yun Qiao dug the soil and Chen Fengxia transported it out. They worked together as partners.
Yun Qiao also looked at the tools distributed by others. Among them, iron spades were the most, and there were also quite a few hoes. There were also a few four-toothed flat rakes for farming. For transporting soil, there were not only carrying baskets, backpacks, but also wheelbarrows. There were all kinds of tools. In short, no one had any free hands.
At the command of Captain Yang, all the educated youth started working with all their might. After all, the new dormitory was built for themselves. The sooner it was completed, the sooner they could move out, so they wouldn't have to share a room with the old educated youth.
The situation for the female educated youth was relatively acceptable. After all, there were few of them, and eight or nine of them living in one room was not particularly crowded.
The situation was different for the male educated youth. There were many of them, with at least twelve or thirteen living in one room. Some of them were not very clean. They didn't brush their teeth, wash their faces, or wash their feet, and they would wear smelly socks for several days.
Not only was the room crowded, but it also smelled terrible, a mixture of brain oil and foot odor that gave me a headache.
So in order to move into the new house as soon as possible, everyone worked hard in this cold weather. Some male educated youth who were afraid of heat even took off their cotton coats and only wore thin sweaters. Even after taking off so much, they did not feel cold.
Yun Qiao was also sweating, but she didn't take off her clothes, for fear that if she did, the sweat would be exposed and she would catch a cold later.
In this way, I would take a break when I was tired, drink water in the water room when I was thirsty, and work until nightfall, then I would finish work and go to the cafeteria to eat.
After dinner, no one was in the mood to chat and laugh.
