Feng Juan went home and gathered Aunt Feng's previous medical records and the hospital bill list and put them in her briefcase.
Feng Juan originally wanted to burn these things together with Aunt Feng when she passed away. It was Yun Qiao who saw that Aunt Feng's relatives in her hometown were not easy to deal with, so she kept some of them. Unexpectedly, they would actually come in handy.
Feng Juan sighed and came down from upstairs carrying her briefcase.
Aunt Jiang, the nanny at home, saw Feng Juan was about to go out and couldn't help asking, "Sister Feng, it's almost noon, you're still going out?"
Feng Juan nodded: "There is something to do."
"Will you come for lunch?" Aunt Jiang asked.
It's not certain whether Feng Juan can be brought here, it depends on how difficult the other two people are.
So Feng Juan said, "I may not be able to make it in time for lunch. You can just make something to eat for yourselves and don't have to be my wife."
Aunt Jiang responded: "Yi."
By the time Feng Juan slowly emerged from the cadre compound, Aunt Feng and her sister-in-law had become impatient.
"What could possibly take so long? I thought you didn't dare to come out?!"
Feng Juan glanced at them expressionlessly, too lazy to waste time talking to them. She said directly, "If you have anything to say, say it in front of the police."
After saying that, Feng Juan took the lead and walked towards the nearby Public Security Bureau.
The two of them muttered a few sarcastic words behind her and hurried to the Public Security Bureau.
After arriving at the Public Security Bureau, the couple immediately went to find the officer who had been there before. The officer glanced at them, then at Feng Juan, who was standing behind them, and nodded. "Right away. Go to mediation room number 1 and wait for me. I'll be there when I'm done."
Just as the two were about to ask where Mediation Room No. 1 was, they heard the police officer shout to a female police officer not far away, "Xiao Li, come here and help me take the person to Mediation Room No. 1."
Xiao Li responded and quickly came over to take them to mediation room No. 0.
Mediation Room No. 0 is not very big. There is only a long table with a few chairs on each side.
Xiao Li pushed open the door of the mediation room and asked them to find a place to sit.
Feng Juan thanked her and took the middle seat on the right side of the long table with her briefcase.
Aunt Feng and her sister-in-law looked at each other, and without prior agreement, they chose to sit opposite Feng Juan.
The grassroots public security bureau is very busy and has endless cases to deal with every day. Xiao Li sent them to the mediation room and left. The police had not been here for a long time before.
Feng Juan and her friends waited in the mediation room for nearly half an hour before the police officers in charge of the case finally arrived.
In one hand he held a cup of steaming tea, and in the other he held a notebook in which he had written down what the couple had said when they came to report the case.
He placed the teacup on the table, pulled up a chair, and sat between the two parties. He then opened his notebook, glanced at the name written on it, and spoke directly to the point: "The reporter is Feng Lin, Feng Yong, right? Accusing Feng Juan of misappropriating the inheritance left by our deceased nanny?"
"Yes, yes, that's right." The two girls nodded repeatedly: "We want to sue Feng Juan for misappropriating the money left by my sister/my aunt."
The police officer nodded and continued, "Do you have any evidence to prove that this Feng Juanzhi has embezzled your relatives' inheritance?"
"This..." Feng Lin and Feng Yong looked at each other. Feng Lin said, "My eldest sister went to work as a nanny in their family in the 1970s. She worked for them for 30 years and died in their family. We relatives didn't even get to see her for the last time."
"She only notified us after Feng Juan and the others died. I called her and asked if my eldest sister left anything behind, and she said no. How could we possibly believe that? She must have hidden something."
"That's just speculation," the police officer rapped on the table, reminding him, "but now that we're at the police station, we have to look at the evidence. You said she hid your eldest sister's inheritance. Do you have any evidence?"
Feng Lin and Feng Yong looked at each other. Although they didn't want to admit it, they couldn't make up a lie and say they had evidence in front of the police.
Feng Lin tried to play it off: "I was chatting with my eldest sister earlier, and she told me that she worked as a nanny for Feng Juan's family. Feng Juan paid her ten yuan a month. As a nanny, she provided food and lodging at home, so she didn't have to spend any of her own money. She was also very frugal, so she saved all that money every month. In a year, she would have saved at least a hundred yuan. Now that she's dead, there must still be some money."
The police knocked on the table again and reminded her: "Stop making assumptions and show us the evidence."
"I don't have any evidence," Feng Lin said indignantly. "But Public Security Officer, you have to understand us. It wasn't easy for us to come all the way from our hometown to the capital. We were delayed for several days on the road, and by the time we got here, my eldest sister had already been buried. We thought about visiting the place where she lived, but I don't know if she's guilty, she won't even let us into her house. Where can we find evidence?"
"I can't find it."
The police officer nodded slightly and turned to look at Feng Juan. "Dear Feng Juan, I'm sure you heard what the reporter said. What do you have to say?"
Feng Juan replied calmly, "What the reporter said is not true."
"The reason I waited until after someone died to notify them was mainly because they weren't close. Aunt Feng didn't want to see them for the last time. I respected Aunt Feng's choice, so after she passed away, I called my hometown to announce the death according to etiquette."
"Also, they themselves didn't want to attend the funeral. When the news of the death came out, I called her and asked if they wanted to come to Beijing to see Aunt Feng off for the last time. They themselves thought it was too far to come."
"Why are you here again now? You're definitely here for the money."
The police officer nodded and asked, "Regarding the other party's accusation that you embezzled the nanny's inheritance, do you have any defense?"
Feng Juan nodded and said, "Yes."
"Her older sister died of illness. She had lung cancer, and it was already in the late stages when it was discovered. She spent the last three or four months in the hospital. Here are her medical records and medical bills. Please review them."
As Feng Juan spoke, she opened her briefcase and handed the documents in it to the police officer for review.
"The money for her medical treatment was all paid for by our family, and we never asked for a share from her relatives back home. I admit that she did leave a passbook when she passed away, but there wasn't much money in it, not even enough to buy a grave. I took the money out of the passbook and added a little more to it to buy her a plot of land at Wan'an Cemetery."
"I'm telling you this is all true. I didn't embezzle a cent. You can check it out."
The police reviewed each list and found irrefutable evidence. They turned to Feng Yong and his wife and said, "Feng Yong, Feng Lin, based on the existing evidence, they truly did not embezzle your relatives' inheritance. They even paid for your family's medical treatment. Calling the police is truly unreasonable."
Feng Lin was unwilling to give up. After all, the two of them had spent dozens of dollars just on travel expenses to the capital. If they went there without getting anything in return, it would be a huge loss.
He pointed at Feng Juan and said, "Public Security Officer, how could you believe her so easily? She must be hiding something else. Maybe she's hiding something else from my eldest sister."
The police officer said sternly, "Everything requires evidence. You claim someone embezzled your relative's inheritance, but you don't have any evidence. And they've actually laid out all the evidence."
He pointed to the hospital bills on the table and said, "Have you seen these bills issued by the hospital? Each one is more than ten or ten yuan, and here, there is a huge stack of dozens of bills."
"My nanny is sick, and she's dedicated to treating her. Doesn't that just show how strong her character is?"
"I'm telling you, some daughters and sons, upon learning that their own parents have cancer, may not be willing to spend a few hundred dollars on treatment, and would just leave them to die."
"So, we should have some conscience and not be ignorant of the evil."
"I have done my best."
Feng Lin wanted to say something, but Feng Yong, seeing this, quickly grabbed her arm and signaled her to forget it.
"No, we can't just let it go like this. Her family is poor, so she has to compensate us no matter what!" Feng Lin shook off her son's hand, sat on the ground and acted like a spoiled child.
