"Of course, we're getting married." Zheng Yujing said seriously, "Mom, Ji Yu has done so much for me, I've seen it all, and my heart isn't made of stone. How can I remain indifferent at this point?"
Mother Zheng nodded. "Well, in that case, when Ji Ye comes, ask him when he's free and have him take you to his house to meet his parents. If his parents have no objections, we can sit down together and discuss it, choose a date, and hold your wedding."
"Yes." Zheng Yu nodded quietly, took her mother's arm, leaned her head on her shoulder, and said softly, "Mom, I'm a little reluctant to leave you so early."
Mother Zheng rubbed Zheng Jing's hair distressedly and said softly, "Mom is reluctant to let you get married so early."
My daughter has been in the countryside for five years and it was not easy for her to return to the city. As a mother, of course I wish she could live in our home forever.
But since they had accepted Ji Yi's favor, they couldn't drag him along any longer. Otherwise, if word got out, their daughter would be scolded and criticized.
After all, the two families live close to each other, so my daughter can go home often even after she gets married.
After returning home, Zheng's mother first helped Zheng Jing send her daughter back to her room, and then immediately went to the kitchen to prepare lunch.
I went to the meat department early in the morning and queued up to buy pork ribs and pork belly.
The spare ribs are chopped into small pieces, coated with batter and fried in a pan. This is Zheng Yujing’s favorite Qiaotou spare ribs.
The pork belly, chunky and braised in red sauce, was a real treat when served with rice. There were also chili scrambled eggs, stir-fried vegetables with lard, and a laver and egg drop soup. This welcome meal for Zheng Jing's return was no less special than their family's New Year's Eve dinner.
Mother Zheng was busy in the kitchen by herself. Zheng Jingjing wanted to help, but she chased her out. "The kitchen is full of smoke. Let your father help me. You're not needed. You must be very tired after sitting on the train for several days. If you feel tired, go back to your room and get some sleep. I have to stew the meat here. It will take at least an hour. I'll call you when dinner is ready."
Zheng Yujing was pushed out of the kitchen and returned to her room. She lay on the bed but couldn't fall asleep, so she got up and tidied her clothes.
She is still living in the same room she lived in before going to the countryside.
During the five years she was away, Zheng Sheng moved in. Now that she was back, even though she would get married soon and wouldn't live in this house for too long, Zheng Sheng immediately vacated the room and moved into his parents' room.
The long-lost family warmth made Zheng Jing feel relaxed all over, and the corners of her mouth rose unconsciously while she was tidying up the room.
After a hearty lunch, Zheng Jing lay down on the bed and took a nap. She woke up around three o'clock, and the faint aroma of scrambled eggs wafted through the air.
Zheng Jing opened the door and went out, and found that her parents were sitting in the main room making dumplings. Her father was responsible for rolling out the dough, and her mother was responsible for making the dumplings. The couple worked together and had already filled half a basket.
Zheng Jing wrinkled her nose and sniffed, then walked forward and asked, "What's the filling? It smells delicious."
"Sophora japonica flowers and egg filling." Mother Zheng said with a smile, "When your Aunt Su in the front yard heard you were back, she gave me half of the Sophora japonica flowers she picked from her mother's house and asked me to make dumplings for you. They were freshly picked from the tree this morning and are very tender."
"It's amazing that after all these years, Aunt Su still remembers that I like dumplings stuffed with locust flowers." Zheng Jing felt a warm feeling in her heart. She rolled up her sleeves and said, "I'll go wash my hands and help you make them. I'll cook them and bring a bowl to Aunt Su."
Mother Zheng nodded, "It's my duty."
In the evening, Zheng Yujing made a bowl of the locust flower dumplings she had made and sent it to Aunt Su in the front yard. Aunt Su held Zheng Yujing's hand and chattered for a long time before letting her go home.
Zheng Yujing came out of Aunt Su's house with an empty bowl in her hand and ran into Ji Yuqi entering the slum.
He had just finished filming and was about to take a shower at the studio because he had painted his face. He was thinking about Zheng Jing and rushed over after taking a shower, so when Zheng Jing saw him, his hair was still a little wet.
"Jing." Ji Yu trotted towards her.
"Ji ye." Zheng Yujing smiled at him and said, "Did you just get married?"
Ji Yu nodded: "I will come to you as soon as I collect the money."
He looked at Zheng Yujing's eyes sparkling with love that he could not hide. He really wanted to hug Zheng Yujing, but there were many people in the slum and they were all gossipy and didn't like Zheng Yujing, so he couldn't.
Zheng Jing smiled and raised the empty bowl in her hand, saying, "I've made some dumplings stuffed with locust flowers at home. Come to my house for dinner tonight."
Ji Yu hesitated a little, "Isn't this a bit too much? Uncle and aunt..."
"What's wrong with that? We're getting married soon, so what's wrong with my future son-in-law having a meal at our house?" Zheng Yujing said, taking his hand and leading him home.
Ji Yu was dazed as Zheng Yujing pulled him along. When he spoke, he was so nervous that he stuttered, "Yujing, you... you agreed?"
"Yes, I agree."
As they were talking, Zheng Jing stopped at the door and glanced back at him: "What? Are you regretting it?"
