Someone died
Standing at the entrance of the room, looking at the people inside, Mo Yang felt somewhat uneasy.
Most of the people in the room were wearing military uniforms, the only difference being the rank on their shoulders.
Mo Yang scanned the surroundings and felt somewhat relieved after spotting that person.
"Close the door."
A high-ranking military officer in front of him issued the order.
Mo Yang looked back and saw a narrow crack in the doorway. Although he couldn't see anyone outside, the sounds were loud enough for someone outside to hear clearly.
Upon hearing this, Fan Siwen quickly ran over and closed the door a crack, and the room became quiet.
As they pushed Mo Yang closer to the crowd, the feet following behind the wheelchair trembled incessantly as they moved.
As they got a little closer, Fan Siwen stopped and stood right behind Mo Yang.
"Get a chair and sit down," Huang Zhongqian said to the young man.
"Yes, sir."
Fan Siwen quickly pulled over a rattan chair not far away, carefully placed it down, and then slowly sat down.
When she pulled her foot back, she accidentally kicked the corner of Mo Yang's wheelchair, making a crisp "thud".
The room fell completely silent.
"Now that we're all on the same side, let's hear your thoughts," Huang Zhongqian said in a slightly heavy voice.
“I think something is amiss. During today’s meeting, as usual, no suspicious people were present.”
"Heh, so according to you, it must have been someone you knew. Tell me, everyone here, who do you suspect?"
The people in the room looked at each other, their familiar eyes now carrying a hint of something strange.
Mo Yang was unaware of the whole story and dared not utter a sound; the atmosphere in the room was extremely oppressive at that moment.
"Alright, we all know you have a good relationship with Fei Jun, but we can't jump to conclusions. After all, this matter is aimed at everyone here. It's hard to say that it wasn't done intentionally by someone."
"Were any eavesdropping devices found in the meeting room?" Huang Zhongqian asked.
"Not yet. However, according to Lao Feng, an app that may leak personal information was found on Fei Jun's phone."
"These days there aren't many apps with eavesdropping functions, so this isn't enough to prove anything."
"However, Lao Feng said that the last message Fei Jun sent on his phone was at 10:43 a.m.
"That means he brought his phone into the meeting!" Someone who was sitting suddenly stood up.
"What important matter could make him go against his principles?" Li Dexin, who was standing to the side, couldn't sit still any longer.
"It seems like the content was sent to family members."
"Indeed, everyone knows he's family-oriented, but..."
"What about the people who conducted the meeting inspection? Didn't they notice anything amiss?" The person standing there blushed deeply.
"They've been questioned, and he's been dealt with for dereliction of duty; he's been suspended from work and detained pending trial."
"This is utterly absurd! How could such a coincidence happen? What do they take our State Secrets Bureau for? They're neglecting their duties. If this continues, they might as well call it the Leaks Bureau instead of the State Secrets Bureau."
Upon hearing this, Huang Zhong's face turned cold.
The person speaking nearby lowered their voice even further.
"According to them, it was Lao Fei who gave prior notice."
"One or two, do they think the State Secrets Bureau is some kind of place! Well, now that it's leaked, if things blow up, no one can cover it up!"
"The key is to shut the media up first."
"We also need to build good relations with them, dispel their doubts about us, and unite against external threats."
Mo Yang was increasingly confused and couldn't help but ask, "What exactly happened?"
"A senior leader left a meeting early to go home and died in a car accident on his way home."
Mo Yang understood the outcome of the matter and, connecting it with the cause that everyone had just discussed, said, "Then, if we investigate the people involved in the meeting to discuss important matters, wouldn't we be able to deduce a strong clue?"
Based on his experience of watching police dramas for no less than ten years, Mo Yang felt that he had made a valid deduction.
"Yes, wouldn't it be more direct to check who was involved in the meeting?"
Mo Yang sensed something strange about the man's tone of voice; he seemed to be speaking up for him.
No one spoke.
Huang Zhongqian took over the conversation.
"The main topic of this meeting is the future development direction of all humanity, not any particular individual. If any of you have different opinions, you are welcome to leave now."
Everyone present fell silent.
"Let me say a few words. Let's not rush to conclusions. The most urgent task is to find out who's behind this. The development of events may not be as simple as we imagine. If it involves foreign forces, then it becomes a matter of great importance to our entire country. I believe there must be an undercover agent within the research institute. Of course, we cannot rule out the possibility that others are framing us. In short, since everyone has made their choice, we must stick to the path we've chosen. We cannot back down at the first sign of trouble. At the same time, everyone must take good care of their own safety."
"Does anyone else have anything to say?" Huang Zhongqian looked at everyone present. "If not, then I'll go over the work arrangements for now. Assistant Li, you'll assist the police outside. General Fang, ensure the safety and reassurance of everyone during the lockdown. Keep an eye on suspicious individuals. Deputy Director Wang, you'll temporarily take over Fei Jun's duties; the media work is now your responsibility. I hope everyone remembers their mission, unites as one, and overcomes this challenge together."
Everyone obeyed and went out.
Only Huang Zhongqian, Mo Yang, and Fan Siwen remained in the room.
The atmosphere shifted from serious to tense, and Mo Yang dared not look the person in front of him in the eye.
The person in front of me, however, seemed to have weathered many storms and remained calm and undisturbed by anything.
"Should I not be here?" Mo Yang asked in a low, lifeless voice.
"Even if you're not caught up in right and wrong, you're still a person of right and wrong. Sometimes life is like that. Since it's happened, you have to face it. It's not safe in the institute these days, so please be careful about your personal safety. It's better to avoid going to public places like the cafeteria and washrooms during off-peak hours. In the future, you don't need to join in the fun in public places. Just focus on your research. We will ensure the overall progress is orderly and at the same time guarantee your personal safety."
These words seemed to have given Mo Yang a calming effect.
Mo Yang glanced at the people beside him, and Fan Siwen received the signal. The two of them went out together.
Mo Yang, standing outside the door, kept his head down and remained silent, letting Fan Siwen push him.
Fan Siwen, standing behind Mo Yang, was also somewhat confused.
He was ordered by his superiors to monitor him, but in the room just now, he saw him being protected by his leader. And the leader who gave him this assignment was also in that room.
He didn't even dare to look up at him.
What exactly happened?
He didn't understand.
Huang Zhong had given prior instructions to allow the two men to pass.
The journey ahead was smooth, but just before returning to the dormitory, Fan Siwen was stopped. "The notice only mentioned him. You don't have a pass, so you need to go back to the conference room."
What's going on?
Seeing Fan Siwen retracing his steps, Mo Yang was somewhat puzzled.
He had no choice but to slowly make his way back to his dorm room alone.
Looking at the empty room, Mo Yang couldn't sit still, so he grabbed his toiletries and went to the washroom.
When they arrived at the location Xiao Zhang had mentioned, they saw a sign on a door not far away that read, "The washroom is closed to the public during the investigation."
Helpless, they turned around and went home.
When I returned to the dormitory, Fan Siwen was still not there.
After a long day, Mo Yang felt a bit weak and didn't even have time to eat, so he decided to go straight to sleep.
While taking off my clothes, my hand inadvertently touched my pants pocket and felt something.
He doesn't remember putting anything in it.
I took it out by feeling with my fingers.
It turned out to be a note.
Upon opening it, I found a string of numbers written in messy handwriting, along with a few illegible words: Cooperate with me, and the whole thing will be over.
Mo Yang, who had been feeling a little sleepy, was wide awake after seeing the note.
The irritation in my heart felt like being pounded by a heavy hammer, again and again, faster and faster.
He was unclear about the person's intentions and did not know who the other person was.
Even the extent of the power behind the other party is unknown.
However, the other party has already infiltrated his side.
The incident started because of him, and he didn't want anyone to die because of him, but it had already happened. He couldn't change it. All he could do was use his abilities to do what was best for the greater good.
But this also means that more people will be in danger of losing their lives because of him.
I lay in bed all night, unable to sleep.
I watched helplessly as the night turned to light outside the window.
It was already quite bright outside. Mo Yang rubbed his eyes, which hadn't slept all night. The person on the opposite bed still hadn't returned.
That night, Mo Yang didn't rest. He used his phone to search for information about the current state of world affairs, gaining a general understanding of the world.
Although this understanding is slightly different from what Huang Zhongqian told himself.
At this moment, Mo Yang was like a judge who already knew the inside story of a competition, showing no interest whatsoever in the current or even future developments.
Even so, he still managed to get a general understanding of antique machines and thoroughly researched online shopping.
Although the phone is connected to the local area network here, the internet speed isn't as bad as I expected. However, to be honest, it's still a bit slow.
It took him four hours just to buy some daily necessities.
At least I bought a change of clothes, so I don't have to wear this incredibly unfashionable outfit to see people anymore.
The rumbling of his stomach shattered Mo Yang's sweet dream.
He got up, put on the clothes beside him, and before leaving, glanced at the person in the mirror, sighed, and realized he still had to live like this for another 60 years.
As he expected, the cafeteria was closed today, but that didn't mean there was no food available.
I picked up a bag of packed breakfast from the insulated box next to me and walked out of the cafeteria.
There was no one around, so Mo Yang opened his breakfast and ate as he walked, while also familiarizing himself with the layout of the place.
Mo Yang stopped in front of a display wall.
He was so engrossed in looking at the words on the wall that he didn't notice the person walking up behind him.
"The State Secrets Bureau has existed for a long time, established in the early days of the People's Republic of China. At that time, there were many branches and systems, but in recent years, the State Secrets Bureau has taken over its management. It is uniformly known as the Institute of Nuclear Physics. It is located all over the country, and the one we are in now is the research institution with the widest range of research factions and the most complex system in the country. It is also the research institution with the most cutting-edge research and development results from home and abroad. It can provide the world's largest-scale controlled nuclear fusion project. There are two projects: one is ITER, in France, and the other is EAST, which is here."
As Mo Yang listened to the man's explanation, he broke out in a cold sweat as he got to the end.
He probably knows far more about this place than he claims.
Judging from the looks of it, this must be one of the most senior leaders here.
As for EAST, which he just mentioned, it is currently located in Mo Yang's laboratory.
Not far away, groups of two or three people were moving about. The people behind him walked away before Mo Yang could greet them.
Just as he realized what had happened, Mo Yang turned around and followed the person's back, walking in the opposite direction. Suddenly, Mo Yang felt someone tap his shoulder from behind.
