Chapter 152: Grandma is gone

The guards guarding the city recognized the man on horseback at a glance, and immediately knelt on the ground and saluted.

"Shen Yuhan?"

Fang Qingyue's heart suddenly jumped, and when she saw who it was, her eyes suddenly widened.

She didn't expect Shen Yuhan to appear at the city gate at this time.

Her heart was shaken, her thoughts were in a mess, and all kinds of speculations emerged in her mind.

His steps were so hurried and his expression so serious that it was obvious that the situation was urgent.

"He...came here to capture Song Xiaoya?"

Fang Qingyue murmured to herself, with mixed feelings in her heart.

When Shen Yuhan arrived at the city gate on horseback, he waved his hand without even waiting for the guards to finish their salute.

“Get out of the way!”

Watching Shen Yuhan galloping away on horseback, he felt a mixture of emotions.

Her eyes followed his receding figure, and after a moment she regained her composure and quickly pulled Fang Chiyue towards the other side of the city gate.

They hid in the shadows at the city gate, praying in their hearts that they would not be discovered by the guards.

Fang Qingyue was nervous at the moment, but she knew that time was running out and she couldn't think any more.

The most important thing now is to leave the capital as soon as possible and take Chi Yue away from this place of trouble.

Just as they were about to blend in with the people leaving the city, the guards suddenly became alert, checking everyone's identity one by one and asking them to take off their veils and face each other.

Fang Qingyue's heart sank. She knew that the capital was now under tight security in order to capture Song Xiaoya.

"Chi Yue, be careful, you have to follow me closely from now on."

Fang Qingyue reminded in a low voice, then pulled the veil on her face slightly lower.

Fang Chiyue held her hand tightly. Although she couldn't see, she could feel the approaching crisis from her sister's voice.

When it was their turn, the guards blocked their way with a wary look on their faces, glancing at Fang Qingyue and Fang Chiyue vigilantly.

"Take off your veil and let me see it."

Fang Qingyue's heart tightened, but she tried to keep a calm face.

If you show panic at this moment, it will only arouse more suspicion.

She smiled slightly and said softly, "Sir, my sister is blind. I am just taking her to visit relatives in the countryside. Please do me a favor."

The guard did not budge at all and said coldly, "No matter where you are going, the rules are the rules. You must take off your veil. If there is no problem, you can go."

Fang Qingyue was helpless, knowing that she could not delay any longer.

She whispered a few words of comfort to Fang Chiyue, then slowly took off her veil, revealing her face covered by mud.

Her face was deliberately smeared with dirt, and her clothes were tattered, making her look like a homeless beggar.

The guard glanced at Fang Qingyue with a hint of disgust on his face.

He glanced at Fang Chiyue, who was standing next to Fang Qingyue. Seeing that her eyes were lifeless and she was leaning on a cane, she was obviously a blind girl. He relaxed his vigilance and waved his hand: "Go ahead."

Fang Qingyue held Fang Chiyue's hand, lowered her head, and walked quickly through the city gate.

She could feel the guards' disdainful gazes sweeping over them from behind, but she suppressed her inner nervousness and pretended to be calm.

Only after they were far away from the city gate and blended into the bustling crowd did Fang Qingyue quietly breathe a sigh of relief.

"Sister, we're out of town."

Fang Chiyue relied on her hearing to keenly notice that the surrounding noise had changed from the hustle and bustle of the city to the tranquility of the countryside, and spoke softly.

"Yes, Chi Yue, we are finally out of the city."

Fang Qingyue responded softly, but she didn't feel relaxed at all.

This is just the first step in their escape, and they will face more unknown dangers next.

After the two walked out of the city gate, they walked along the mountain road towards the mother-in-law's cottage.

Fang Qingyue was always worried about her, thinking that she must rush back as soon as possible to give her the food and medicinal materials she brought from the clinic.

Along the way, Fang Qingyue remained alert at all times, listening carefully and scanning the surroundings with sharp eyes.

The light of dusk gradually dimmed, and the surrounding woods were dyed orange by the sunset. The wind rustled the leaves, which seemed to indicate that something unexpected was about to happen.

Finally, they arrived at the mother-in-law's hut.

Fang Qingyue stood in front of the door and knocked gently, but there was no response from inside the house.

She frowned, opened the door and walked in, only to find the room empty.

"Mother-in-law?" Fang Qingyue called softly, but still no response.

Fang Qingyue felt vaguely uneasy. She quickly walked to the back kitchen, pushed open the door, and was immediately hit by a strong smell of blood.

She was stunned, stopped abruptly, and stared straight at a corpse on the ground.

Who else could it be but my mother-in-law?

Fang Qingyue lost all her strength in an instant, her vision went dark, and she almost fell to the ground.

Her heart was shocked and her eyes were filled with disbelief.

She walked forward tremblingly and knelt beside the old woman, her fingers gently touching her body, which was cold and stiff.

"Mother-in-law..." Fang Qingyue murmured to herself, tears instantly bursting out of her eyes.

Her tears, mixed with regret, slid down her cheeks.

It was I who brought disaster to this innocent old man.

If it weren't for her, my mother-in-law might still be living a poor but peaceful life in this desolate mountain.

And now, she died because of herself, in this little house that was supposed to be her sanctuary.

"Sister, what happened?"

Fang Chiyue noticed that Fang Qingyue was in an abnormal mood and groped around the house anxiously.

Fang Qingyue reluctantly wiped away her tears, took a deep breath, and tried to calm herself down.

She walked to Fang Chiyue, took her hand, and said in a choked voice: "Chiyue... Grandma... she's gone."
