Just as he stood there lost in thought, a guard hurried over and whispered, "Master Li, General Shen asks you to go to the book room to discuss matters."
Li Chengfeng's heart trembled, then he nodded, put away his thoughts, turned around and followed the guards towards Shen Yuhan's tent.
The lights in Shen Yuhan's military tent were brightly lit, and heavy curtains were drawn to block the night wind from outside.
Inside the tent, Shen Yuhan was sitting behind the desk, looking down at a document. His expression was still stern, and there was a hint of deep thought between his brows.
Li Chengfeng walked in and saluted: "General Shen, you are looking for me?"
Shen Yuhan raised his head and gave Li Chengfeng a deep look. He then put down the document in his hand and smiled slightly: "Boss Li, I am grateful for your help tonight. I will remember this favor."
When Li Chengfeng heard him mention Fang Qingyue, a complex emotion suddenly surged in his heart.
He shook his head lightly and said calmly: "General Shen, you are too serious. It is just my job and not worth mentioning."
Shen Yuhan's smile remained unchanged, but a hint of coldness flashed in his eyes.
He slowly stood up and walked in front of Li Chengfeng, his eyes as sharp as a knife: "My job? Boss Li, this is not like you."
He paused and said meaningfully, "I have to charge a little extra."
Li Chengfeng was slightly stunned, frowning, and doubts arose in his heart: "What does General Shen mean?"
Shen Yuhan smiled calmly, turned around and walked back to the desk with his hands behind his back, his expression regained its composure: "News has come from the capital. The matter of the mountain bandits has been reported to the emperor. The emperor urgently summoned me back to the capital to report."
"I originally planned to stay for a few more days, but now that things are over, I hope you can return to Beijing with me early."
When Li Chengfeng heard this, his heart was slightly shocked.
He originally wanted to stay in Jiangnan for a while, after all, his cooperation with Shen Yuhan had not yet completely ended.
However, after hearing Shen Yuhan's words, he knew that it was useless to delay any longer.
"General Shen, are you saying... that you want me to accompany you back to Beijing tomorrow?"
There was a hint of hesitation in Li Chengfeng's tone.
There were still things in his heart that he couldn't let go of, especially his concern for Qingyue, which made it impossible for him to make a decision immediately.
Shen Yuhan's eyes narrowed slightly, the smile on his face gradually faded, and a hint of pressure appeared in his eyes: "Master Li, things have developed to this point, don't you understand?"
"Although the banditry has been quelled, the imperial court's control over the situation in Jiangnan is still unstable."
"The Emperor has urgently summoned me. You and I must return to the capital as soon as possible to report."
Li Chengfeng stood there, with countless thoughts surging in his mind.
Shen Yuhan was right. The current situation did not allow him to delay any further.
What's more, Fang Qingyue's indifference towards him has made him disheartened. Perhaps returning to Beijing is the best choice.
He was silent for a moment, and finally nodded gently, his voice low: "I understand, General Shen. Tomorrow morning, I will set off with you back to Beijing."
After Li Chengfeng left, the atmosphere in the military tent became unusually quiet for a moment, with only the flickering shadows of the fire outside the tent swaying slightly on the wall.
As the night deepened, the cool breeze blew into the tent, bringing with it the unique humidity of autumn nights in the south of the Yangtze River.
Shen Yuhan stood in front of the desk, his fingertips gently stroking the corners of the file, but his mind was no longer on the documents in front of him.
After a while, he called out, "Someone come here."
A guard immediately came in, knelt on one knee, and asked respectfully, "General, what are your orders?"
Shen Yuhan retracted his wandering gaze and said calmly, "Go see Boss Li and see how he is doing now."
The guard agreed, quickly left the tent, and disappeared into the night.
Shen Yuhan stood alone in the tent, but his mind gradually drifted away.
It's not that he was unaware of Li Chengfeng's feelings for Fang Qingyue, but he had been watching from the sidelines for the past few days, and seeing that Li Chengfeng was becoming increasingly haggard, he had a vague guess in his heart.
Li Chengfeng looked disheartened at the moment, which was actually a good thing for him as it would save him a lot of trouble.
This unnecessary emotional entanglement will eventually no longer be a hindrance.
However, after so much time had passed, Li Chengfeng finally gave up.
Thinking of this, Shen Yuhan curled up the corners of his mouth into a cold smile.
Not long after, the guard returned and reported in a low voice, "General, Master Li seems to be in a bad mood. He has returned to the tent, but he is in a heavy mood and has not slept."
Shen Yuhan nodded slightly, frowning slightly, as if he had already expected this result.
He waved his hand, signaling the guards to withdraw. He took a few steps inside the tent, walked to the door with his hands behind his back, and looked at the night sky, with a complicated emotion in his heart.
His gaze passed through the tent in the distance, as if he could see the lonely figure of Li Chengfeng.
He could see through Li Chengfeng's thoughts over the past few days at a glance.
Li Chengfeng's obsession with that woman almost made him lose his former fighting spirit.
The woman's indifference was like a sharp blade, piercing straight into Li Chengfeng's heart.
Shen Yuhan saw all this clearly, but also felt it was natural.
How could a woman so calm and intelligent be easily moved by a man?
Her heart may have been blocked by the pain of the past, and no one can open it easily.
Who knew that when he thought of this, Fang Qingyue's face appeared in front of him unconsciously, and Shen Yuhan's heart suddenly moved.
The blurry face emerged in his mind, and the fragments of the past also came flooding back.
She used to be the most important person in his life, but now, she seemed like a distant phantom that he pursued but could no longer reach.
Shen Yuhan stood in the night wind, feeling a pang of sadness in his heart.
Fang Qingyue’s death was a wound that would never heal for him.
