Chapter 49 The Truth

"What should we do next?" Sun Shufeng asked carefully after he was sure that Shen Qiu Nian had disappeared and there were no spies of Shen Yuhan around.

"Of course they're selling the grain at a high price." Song Xiaoya blew the dust off her nails and said with a smile, "Those people may not have much money, but this grain is a matter of life and death. If they don't buy it, they'll go hungry for a whole year. Even if it's not for themselves, they won't be stingy for the sake of their children's lives."

"This is a very good idea." Sun Shufeng smiled smugly upon hearing this. "As their father and mother, this is the proper thing for me to do. From now on, there will be no coarse grain in the area under the jurisdiction of Qi County. If you want to survive, then pay up."

"No." Fang Qingyue shook her head, her eyes firm as she said, "I came here to help you. What kind of ability would it be if I just stayed in the inn all the time?"

"Besides, Chen Qiu Nian now sees me as a thorn in his side. If he were to attack me in the inn, even if you deploy more people, it would be difficult to stop him."

Having said that, Shen Yuhan could only take her out.

The two went out for a walk, but found nothing unusual in Qi County.

Although the people seemed to be in dire straits, their situation was still manageable, and passersby on the street could see nothing wrong.

But the more this happened, the more suspicious Fang Qingyue became.

Qi County was hit by a flood, and now it happened to be harvest time. The water submerged all the ripe crops, making it impossible to harvest them. All they could do was watch them sprout in the fields.

There was no sadness on the faces of the people; it looked more like a play performed by actors arranged by others.

The only normal person is the beggar on the street.

However, the beggar didn't seem particularly normal.

There were so many beggars here, crowded together. Many of them would secretly look up at them when they passed by, as if they were trying to find out something.

Fang Qingyue stopped in front of a beggar and looked at him straight.

The beggar couldn't help but shrink back because the gaze was too obvious.

Fang Qingyue was about to ask when she heard a rumbling sound in her stomach.

She hadn't eaten much before Song Xiaoya soaked her clothes. She hadn't eaten since leaving the room, so she was really hungry.

When Shen Yuhan heard the voice, he took her to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Sun Shufeng had spies throughout the county town. When he heard that Fang Qingyue had discovered something wrong with the beggar, he immediately sent people to chase her away.

For a moment, the city suddenly became quiet and the beggars on the roadside disappeared completely.

After a meal, Fang Qingyue was about to look for a beggar to ask some questions, but after searching the entire county, she couldn't find any beggars.

Those beggars just now seemed to have evaporated into thin air and disappeared completely.

She frowned slightly and turned to look at Shen Yuhan.

Shen Yuhan shook his head gently.

"Your Highness, since we can't find out anything, let's go back first." She deliberately raised her voice so that the people who were lying in ambush somewhere could hear.

"Okay." Shen Yuhan went back to the inn with her.

"Those beggars disappeared without a trace in such a short time. I'm afraid Sun Shufeng must have been behind this. Why don't we explore the suburbs tonight? There are so many beggars. I don't believe he can move them all away."

They looked like Sun Shufeng's eyes and ears.

In order to continue delivering the message, Sun Shufeng would not leave them too far away.

Shen Yuhan nodded slightly and said, "But since they have already noticed that we found something wrong with the beggar, they will definitely keep watching this place. Why don't we pretend that nothing happened and catch them off guard."

After the two finished their discussion, they each went about their own business in the inn.

Fang Qingyue even took out a medical book and demonstrated how to give herself acupuncture on her wrist.

The lights in their room stayed on until late at night, until Chi Feng quietly came in to report that all the people monitoring them had left.

Shen Yuhan and Fang Qingyue then left the inn and quickly headed for the suburbs.

The dilapidated temple in the suburbs was crowded with beggars.

It is already late autumn. Although Qi County is close to the south of the Yangtze River, the weather is very cold.

Many beggars were staying in the yard outside the dilapidated temple. When they saw Fang Qingyue and Shen Yuhan coming, they didn't even raise their eyebrows.

Fang Qingyue found this attitude a little strange. When they walked over, they heard an extremely angry voice coming from the dilapidated temple.

"That damned Sun Shufeng, not only did he make us his spies, but now, fearing discovery, he's actually trying to drive us out of the city!" The voice sounded like a child's, revealing a hint of childishness. "If he weren't surrounded by so many guards, I would have killed him long ago!"

"Shh, keep your voice down. Walls have ears. If Sun Shufeng's men find out, we'll all be finished." A somewhat old voice advised.

"How could those bastards who only care about comfort come to a place like this? When will they die, idiots?" The child's voice became more and more angry, almost with a hint of gritting his teeth.

Fang Qingyue and Shen Yuhan walked to the door of the dilapidated temple and gently pushed it open.

The dilapidated temple was extremely run-down. Even the Buddha statue sitting on the lotus throne had been pushed to the ground and was covered with dust.

The painted exterior of the Buddha statue has become mottled and flake-by-fragmented as the soil has peeled off.

There were a few fires burning in the dilapidated temple, which were dry firewood picked up by beggars for warmth and lighting.

Seeing Fang Qingyue and Shen Yuhan come in, these people's faces were full of vigilance.

An unpleasant smell was floating in the air, but Fang Qingyue seemed unaware of it and just walked towards the little beggar who was speaking.
