What a pathetic sight.
This made many of the maids standing nearby feel sorry for her.
With red eyes, Madam Ma turned to Wei Wei and asked, "The young mistress just said that this child is clever and that you like him very much. Is that true?"
Wei Wei's eyebrows twitched; she already had a premonition.
Are these two women, mother and daughter-in-law, here to abandon their child?
But this is too early. Could it be that they came here once in their previous life, but the old lady refused them?
No, it doesn't seem like it.
It seems there are still reasons she hasn't figured out.
However, now that she knew their plan, she was definitely unwilling to answer that question. Instead, she gave an irrelevant reply: "Auntie, if you have any difficulties, just say so. You're scaring the child by doing this."
She paused here, then added, "Although I don't particularly like children, I also don't want to hear them cry."
She explained somewhat embarrassedly, "Because I've been under a lot of pressure lately, my emotions sometimes break down, and I occasionally do or say things that are not under my control."
Her words made the two women in front of her feel uneasy.
Is it true or false?
She didn't seem to be faking it, but it was still quite hard to accept.
It's impossible to tell the difference at all.
Noel has always been the most obedient child in their family. Everyone who sees him likes to tease him and say that he is smart and good-looking.
Now, however, he was hurt by the meaning behind Wei Wei's words.
She said she didn't like children, which was blatant disdain.
Her unconventional approach made Ma twitch her lips.
How can she continue speaking in a way that feels natural?
The words stuck in her throat made her face turn very pale.
"How is your great-aunt?"
Wei Wei asked with concern.
Ma nodded reluctantly and forcefully wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
Her eyes kept moving; she clearly hadn't given up.
But soon, she seemed to have found a topic to talk about: "You don't know, my husband passed away a few years ago, and I have several children to take care of."
"It was just too hard and difficult."
She looked at Wei Wei, her eyes glistening with tears: "Auntie came here this time, shamelessly, because she really wanted to discuss with you whether Nuo'er could be raised here for the time being?"
"We'll come and take him away when things are better at home."
She wiped away her tears: "If my sister were here, she would definitely agree."
Upon hearing this, Jiang's shoulders, which had been tense, finally relaxed.
Madam Ma had already started, and then she raised her head and looked at Wei Wei with red eyes: "Young Madam, this is a choice we had no other choice but to make. Please treat him as a servant, as a maid."
"Let him do whatever you need him to do. Although he is young, he is very sensible and will definitely not cause you any trouble."
How can you treat a two- or three-year-old child like a servant and make him do things?
Is this really not a joke?
Wei Wei pursed her lips and remained silent.
Just when they thought she wouldn't agree, Wei Wei sighed: "Have you thought this through?"
The two of them beamed with joy: "We've thought it through! We thought it through a long time ago!"
Wei Wei nodded: "This child is indeed quite good."
"Although I don't like children, I can still keep him around to amuse myself occasionally."
How much silver are you planning to ask for?
The two women were overjoyed. Not only did they keep the child, they even gave them money.
This is fantastic news!
Ma forced a smile to suppress, and said, "This...how can this be?"
Wei Wei said seriously, "My sister-in-law just said that if Nuo'er is allowed to work as a servant in the Meng family, then I will have to sign a contract of servitude."
The two men's expressions changed.
She then slowly spoke again: "Aunt and sister-in-law, please don't misunderstand. Writing this contract of indenture doesn't mean I'm actually selling Nuo'er, but rather that this is how I can get the money."
"No one will gossip about it."
"When you come to pick me up in the future, you can take me away anytime."
The two of them looked better then.
Madam Ma said with a smile, "We don't need the money. Although our family is really in dire straits, you have already helped me a lot."
"I feel at ease with Noel here."
Wei Wei then sighed softly, "Since you don't want the money, then let's forget about it."
"But my health is not good now, and I'm afraid I'm not able to take care of Nuoer myself."
"If you think it's acceptable, I'll have the old woman beside me take her."
"They will definitely take good care of him and love him as if he were their own son."
Jiang stared wide-eyed in disbelief, clearly not expecting such a huge pitfall to be waiting for him.
Even though their family wasn't well-off, they were still direct relatives of the old lady of the Meng family.
When a junior comes to rely on someone, shouldn't they be treated like a young master?
He actually said he wanted his old woman to take care of him and treat her like his mother?
If Wei Wei hadn't looked so genuinely concerned for them, they would have thought she was deliberately insulting them!
Annoyance flashed in Ma's eyes, but not as obviously as in Jiang's.
I originally thought that she was the only one left in the Meng family now. She was young and had never seen much of the world, so it would be easy to manipulate her.
But to her surprise, Wei Wei was not as obedient as she had imagined!
They went through all sorts of hardships to get here, just to get a share of the profits.
