Chapter 15 Teasing the Monkey

No one cared that several servants had died in the Meng household.

But the muddy water had already begun to stir.

Meng Zhixuan believed her and would do his best to work on the Meng family in the next few days, hoping that she could relax a bit.

The next day, just before midnight, Granny Chun entered the room carrying her bundle.

She looked like she hadn't slept all night; her eyes were sunken and her lips were pale, a stark contrast to her energetic appearance yesterday.

Xiao Yue'er glanced at her, her eyes devoid of any smile: "What's wrong with Granny Chun? If you can't bear to part with the old lady, then beg the young mistress for mercy and we'll send you back."

Yesterday, Wei Wei confessed most of the things to the two of them, which further explained how dangerous it was for the three of them to be in the Meng residence.

The two maids could not believe that their young mistress had fallen to such a state.

They were heartbroken and distressed, but even more so, they felt hatred.

Mentioning the old lady's name, Granny Chun seemed startled, her body trembling involuntarily before she managed a smile that looked more like a grimace.

No, no, no, that's not it.

She hurriedly explained, "I went to the mass grave yesterday and have been having nightmares ever since. I'm feeling a bit unwell today, so I hope you will forgive me, young mistress."

Wei Wei gave her a half-smile: "It's my fault. I didn't expect this outcome yesterday."

"Xiao Yue'er took Granny Chun to the side room to tidy up—but Granny Chun will have to stay in Granny Zhang's room for the time being."

"Once the old women have prepared another room, Granny Chun can move there."

When Chun Mama heard that she was going to live in a house where someone had died, her face changed.

She wanted to refuse, but the words wouldn't come out. The old lady's gloomy gaze seemed to want to devour her: "Over there, do less and say less so that others won't suspect you."

"If you were still the same as before, you wouldn't need to live in this world."

Good heavens! In all her decades of life, she had never discovered that the old lady had such a vicious side!

What will become of her in the future!

Just as she was feeling despair, Wei Wei took her hand and gently comforted her: "Don't worry, Granny, everything inside has been replaced, so there won't be any leftover items. I'll also have Xiaoyue move in with you these next few days."

Seeing how considerate Wei Wei was of her, Granny Chun moved her lips, and a rare feeling of guilt welled up inside her.

She vaguely agreed and let Xiaoyue'er lead her out the door.

No sooner had the talent left than Meng Zhixuan arrived.

Wei Wei knew his purpose. When he entered the room, she deliberately took the half of the dragon and phoenix jade pendant off her neck and put it in her dressing case. Then she called out with a smile, "Zhi Xuan".

Meng Zhixuan shifted his gaze from the dressing case, concealing the greed in his eyes, and smiled: "I heard that you paid Zhang Mama's family to take her body back?"

Wei Wei, who had just been smiling, fell silent upon hearing this: "Well, I secretly did something that the old lady doesn't like. I wonder if she'll be angry?"

Meng Zhixuan's eyes flickered: "Don't worry, the old lady may be sharp-tongued, but she's also heartbroken. You did what she wanted to do but couldn't, and she'll only be happy."

Upon hearing this, Wei Wei breathed a sigh of relief and exaggeratedly patted her chest: "That's good, it's just a pity that such a good person as Granny Zhang was lost."

Meng Zhixuan also felt it was a pity.

The old lady had already sent someone to examine Zhang Mama's body, and it was confirmed that she had indeed hanged herself.

The argument with Wei Wei and Madam Meng that night has been thoroughly investigated.

The only thing that pained him was that someone who seemed so steady could actually commit suicide in a moment of impulse.

Ultimately, it was an overestimation of her abilities.

Thinking of this, he glanced around and asked casually, "Your body hasn't fully recovered yet, where are the people the old lady sent to take care of you?"

Wei Wei pointed to the side room and said in a lower voice, "I didn't sleep well last night, so I told her to come and serve me later."

"Don't scare her. Granny Chun is very timid. She went to the mass grave and had nightmares all night."

Seeing Wei Wei's childish appearance, a hint of mockery and relief flashed in Meng Zhixuan's eyes.

This woman, who can't see right from wrong, is really easy to fool. She believes whatever others say. He could easily manipulate her even with his eyes closed!

Meng Zhixuan was both smug and disdainful. He said, "There's been some troublemaker in the manor lately, and I'm thinking of finding that person."

"You should also pay more attention to people in your daily life, and be sure to keep an eye on anyone who acts strangely."

Wei Wei looked surprised and puzzled: "What happened?"

Meng Zhixuan sighed: "The disappearance of your half of the jade pendant is just the beginning; a precious painting has also gone missing from my study."

"No matter what, the person must be found and killed, lest people think that the Meng family has lost its discipline."

Seeing the woman's frightened and nervous expression, he smirked and subtly glanced at the dressing table again.

Since half a jade pendant won't do much good, let's leave it with her for now.

Given how much she cares about that jade pendant, it would definitely take a lot of effort to get rid of it.

As long as Granny Chun keeps an eye on things, nothing will go wrong.

We'll come back for it after we find the other half.

When Wei Wei becomes useless, there will be no need to worry about her anymore.

Thinking of the jade pendant, Meng Zhixuan recalled the man in black who came to find him that night, and his breath immediately became heavy.

The man in black was no ordinary person; although they had only briefly met in the courtyard that day, he was quickly dismissed.

However, since he is a relative of a powerful person, he must not be an ordinary person.

He suddenly appeared in his backyard in the middle of the night dressed in black, just to ask if there was any progress in the search.

The thought of himself inevitably made Meng Zhixuan feel irritable.

After Meng Zhinan was taken to the ancestral hall, he immediately sent people to secretly search his house.

The two servants beside him were also arrested and severely tortured, but they still couldn't get any useful clues out of them.

Could it be in Meng Wanyan's hands? Or perhaps it's with my second aunt?

If things don't progress, you'll definitely get scolded.

I'm not afraid of being reprimanded, I'm just afraid he won't leave a good impression on the important person!

Why couldn't this incompetent woman have put the jade pendant away properly?!

Meng Zhixuan's shifty gaze and gradually growing annoyed expression did not escape Wei Wei's notice.

Playing with monkeys is so much fun!

Her smile deepened, and her voice softened slightly: "Zhixuan, are you coming home for dinner tonight?"

Meng Zhixuan, who was looking annoyed, almost couldn't control the violence in his heart.

A ferocious look flashed in his eyes, then quickly disappeared.
