Wei Wei paused for a moment, then promptly thanked him.
Madam Qin said, "I know my son is not a good person, so I will help you this time as an apology. However, I hope that Madam Meng will not have any further contact with my son in the future."
“He’s not young anymore and he’ll be getting married soon. If the rumors outside get too nasty, neither of you will benefit.”
Wei Wei understood a mother's thoughts.
Not to mention that Madam Qin was quite loyal.
She nodded and said with a smile, "As long as Young Master Qin doesn't cause me any trouble, I won't say another word to him."
Madam Qin glanced at her, gave a faint "hmm," and then, with her daughter who had been watching Wei Wei with curiosity, quickly followed the crowd away.
The living room was now empty, with only the five families surnamed Wei left staring at each other.
Because she was Wei Wei's elder, Madam Meng the Second did not leave. This foolish woman thought there would be some benefit in staying, and her face was full of excitement as she looked around from time to time.
She then asked the maids who were waiting in the same spot, "Did you come from the capital with Miss Jiang? Is the capital very prosperous?"
These words made Wei Wei's ears twitch. Knowing more is always beneficial.
The maid was only fourteen or fifteen years old. When she heard Madam Meng ask her, she immediately bowed respectfully and said, "Madam, we were all bought from slave traders by Miss together."
"We have never been to the capital city you mentioned."
"Only the older sisters around Miss have ever seen the prosperity of the capital."
Madam Meng Er felt a little regretful upon hearing this and muttered, "I've heard that the water in the capital is fragrant, but I wonder if it's true."
The maid didn't know and dared not answer, but the daughter-in-law next to Madam Wei couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Realizing her mistake, she quickly apologized: "Please forgive me, Madam Meng. I didn't mean to mock you. I just suddenly thought of a joke."
The preceding part was fine, but the last sentence was a bit strange.
This is probably what they call trying to cover up something only to make it more obvious.
Madam Meng realized she had made a fool of herself, and her face turned red.
She was a woman who was always calculating and petty, and besides, the family in front of her was much worse off than the Meng family.
Her face darkened, and her tone became somewhat sharp: "Could it be that Young Madam Wei has seen you before?"
A smug look flashed across the woman's face, and she subconsciously opened her mouth to say, "Of course..." but quickly realized her mistake and added in a hurried tone, "Of course not."
"But water is water, where does the claim of it being sweet come from?"
In her haste, her tone lost its previous gentleness, and Madam Meng was even more displeased: "You're just a junior who hasn't even grown a beard yet, and you dare to lecture us like this?"
She looked at Madam Wei and said, "You need to discipline your daughter-in-law more."
The words were quite impolite. Madam Wei raised her head awkwardly to look at Madam Meng, hesitating as if she wanted to say something but couldn't: "The younger generation is ignorant... I hope Madam Meng won't take it seriously."
Her daughter-in-law, however, was quite dismissive.
She doesn't resemble a daughter-in-law at all.
Wei Wei's eyes darted around, and she suddenly sided with Madam Meng, pressing her point relentlessly: "Since you said the wrong thing, you should apologize to my second aunt!"
"Sighing and stammering, are you afraid to admit your mistakes?"
Madam Meng was surprised that she was on her side, and she straightened her back instantly: "That's right! It wasn't us who bullied you orphans and widows. People have to be responsible for their actions! Apologize to me immediately!"
Upon hearing this, Wei Wei's lips twitched.
I don't believe you when you say she's stupid.
Our behavior doesn't seem like we're not bullying anyone!
Wei Wei had no choice but to bite the bullet and nod seriously: "Young Madam Wei is a person of good manners, and I don't think she will cause any trouble over such a small conflict."
These words silenced the room.
The other three families sat silently in their seats, with the Meng family being the most powerful among them.
No one wants to offend them.
Madam Wei looked aggrieved and glanced at her useless mother-in-law beside her; her face darkened.
"Young Madam Meng, why must you be so unforgiving?"
Her eyes were cold, like a venomous snake in the darkness.
"Don't you know the saying 'Words can bring disaster'?"
This statement carries a strong threatening tone, and anyone with normal hearing can hear it clearly.
Everyone glanced at Madam Wei, some openly, some subtly.
At this moment, she and her mother-in-law formed two stark extremes.
Madam Wei's head was lowering further and further. She didn't even utter a word to reprimand her daughter-in-law, who had somewhat lost her composure.
"What arrogance!" Madam Meng was furious. "You junior, didn't your elders teach you what manners are?"
Wei Wei's eyes flashed, and she sighed as well: "She thinks that our old lady and mother are sick and no one is in charge, so she is deliberately bullying us."
Madam Meng felt as if she had been slapped in the face.
She was also one of the masters of the Meng family, and Madam Wei's actions clearly showed that she looked down on her!
Good, good, good! She refused to believe that without those two, she was nothing in the Meng family!
She stood up angrily and shouted, "Even if the old lady and my sister-in-law can't get up, my husband and my uncle are still alive!"
"If you want to bully us, let's see if we have the guts!"
Wei Wei watched coldly, relieved that this woman had no idea what the Meng family's plans were, otherwise, this good show wouldn't have started.
Seeing that things were getting increasingly tense, someone stepped in to smooth things over: "Miss Jiang just mentioned that she has planted many flowers in her backyard. Although they were all recently transplanted and look a bit wilted, they are still rare varieties. Why don't we go and admire them together in a little while?"
