Chapter 59 The Man with the Lantern

The person hasn't come back yet, and probably never will.

Wei Wei wasn't annoyed at being woken up. She smiled good-naturedly and said, "Father and Mother may have had something to do outside and didn't have time to come back. What are you worried about?"

"They're all grown up, are they really afraid of getting lost?"

The head maid looked worried: "Madam is not in good health, why would she go anywhere else?"

"Even if they went, they will definitely send someone back to report..."

"This old servant is truly worried..."

Looking at her sincere expression, Wei Wei pressed her forehead in annoyance before saying, "Then let's send someone to look for it."

Do you know which temple Mother went to? Go find the steward and ask him to send more people to pick her up.

The old woman was overjoyed and immediately agreed happily. However, before she could even turn around and leave the courtyard, she saw the Meng family's steward rushing towards Tingfeng Pavilion in a panic.

"Young Madam! Something terrible has happened! Young Madam! Something terrible has happened!"

The screaming and shouting were truly heart-wrenching. He stumbled and staggered towards us, making it seem like we were seeing a madman.

Xiao Yue'er frowned and scolded, "Steward Wang, what are you doing so late? You've frightened the young mistress!"

Steward Wang, the old man who usually followed behind the Meng family master and acted as his henchman, was now like a stray dog.

They didn't even care about Xiaoyue'er's disrespect.

His lips trembled, and he stopped, panting heavily: "Master accompanied Madam to a temple outside the city to offer incense, but unexpectedly they encountered bandits..."

"His head was just chopped off like that!"

These words startled everyone present, causing their expressions to change drastically.

Wei Wei, her face grim, shouted sternly, "Nonsense! Manager Wang, have you gone mad?"

Steward Wang replied tearfully, "I wish I had misheard! I would rather be flogged! I only wish for your safety, sir!"

He choked back tears and said, "But... the messenger was from the government... they said the master's body is almost at the door... and they want you to go and fetch it!"

Wei Wei's eyes flickered, and she pressed, "How could this happen? Where is Mother?"

"Madam has disappeared... Only the bodies of Master and the stableman Liu Xiao'er remain..." Steward Wang wiped away his tears, truly appearing to be a kind and compassionate person.

Wei Wei's voice became a little hoarse: "You go and wait at the door first, I'll go after I change my clothes."

No sooner had she finished speaking than she asked, "Has Second Uncle returned? Does he know about this news?"

The steward wiped away his tears: "The second master hasn't returned yet. I've already sent people to look for him..."

Wei Wei's voice was weary: "At this critical juncture, my second aunt hasn't even been coaxed back yet, how can he still be thinking about going out..."

As if she could no longer continue, she sighed heavily and strode into the house.

Xiao Yue'er and Xiao Qiao'er quickly helped her change into plain white clothes, then took a lantern and hurried to the front yard.

The group walked quietly along the road, Wei Wei's brows remaining furrowed.

Master Meng is dead, but Madam Meng has disappeared.

Leng Pusheng has not returned yet. Could he have encountered some accident?

Although I had some worries, I kept moving forward.

The entire Meng residence was alarmed, and the house was brightly lit. She was the only one in charge in the courtyard, and she would have to be on her guard and deal with those officials later.

When she arrived at the gate of the Meng residence, almost all the servants had gathered there.

Their eyes held fear and terror, but occasionally a hint of indifference and glee.

Wei Wei had just deliberately applied some powder to her face, making her look paler, flustered, and helpless.

The Meng family is on the verge of collapse, facing an impending storm.

She was very dedicated to her work, believing that if you're going to put on a show, you have to go all the way.

Footsteps sounded hurriedly in the darkness.

First, there was a tall, thin man carrying a lantern.

Their faces were obscured, but their clothes revealed them to be government officials.

Four officials followed behind, carrying a door panel on which lay a person covered with a white cloth, the panel rising and falling with each step.

Wei Wei hurriedly led her people to the front gate.

The five people moved a little closer to them.

"Is this the master?"

Someone spoke softly, with a hint of fear in their voice.

"I think so..."

The other person next to him said blankly, "A perfectly healthy person went out in the morning and was gone by evening."

After these words were spoken, some people began to sob softly.

It wasn't so much about having deep feelings for someone, but rather about being afraid.

When their master dies, the fate of these servants will change drastically.

Unfortunately, it's not impossible for someone to fall from a great height to the ground.

Wei Wei's eyes trembled as those people moved around.

Her pupils remained constricted, her gaze fixed on the man carrying the lantern.

Although he was dressed in the clothes of an ordinary government official, it just felt like he couldn't blend in with the others around him.

It's as if it was forced in.

It seems she needs to be extra careful.

Perhaps her gaze was too intense, for the man suddenly looked up and followed her gaze.

The gate of the Meng residence was just a stone's throw away, and people were everywhere, both inside and out.

The person who had been spying was not found.

Perhaps he was mistaken, but he did begin to pay attention.

Just then, a young woman dressed in plain white clothes with a white flower in her hair took two steps forward with unsteady steps.

The white flowers trembled gently as she walked, making her appear exceptionally fragile.
