Tears welled in her eyes and flowed even more freely. She took two steps toward her third brother, her steps faltering. "Sir, do you know why my father suffered? Where is my mother? They were... they were perfectly fine when they left home..."
Third Brother's face was expressionless, and his voice was lazy and nonchalant: "I'm sorry, apart from Master Meng's body, there are large patches of blood at the scene."
"Madam Meng has vanished without a trace."
He said, "But don't worry, I'll bring it back to you once I find it."
Wei Wei pressed on, asking, "Did you send anyone to investigate? Why are there thieves and bandits out of nowhere?"
Third Brother looked at her angry face, a hint of sympathy in his eyes: "Madam Meng, we are also very surprised by this. The city and the surrounding area have always been peaceful. No one would have expected such a thing to happen."
Wei Wei suddenly let out a cold laugh: "All along peaceful? Who are you trying to fool?"
"My parents encountered bandits outside the city a few days ago! If it weren't for a passing knight-errant saving their lives, would they have made it back alive?"
At this point, her eyes turned bloodshot, and her voice was filled with barely suppressed hatred: "Today! My father-in-law has suffered again, and you're still here lying through your teeth! Put your hands on your consciences and ask yourselves, doesn't it hurt?"
The voice was far too loud, and the other officers stepped forward with stern faces: "Who are you yelling at? Watch your words!"
Wei Wei wasn't afraid. She just raised her head and glared at them fiercely: "Whoever lies through their teeth, I'll yell at them!"
"Now my family has lost their lives again because of your negligence. Am I not even allowed to tell the truth? Are you planning to kill me to cover it up?"
This stubbornness means they won't give up until they get an answer.
The maidservant beside her was so anxious that she kept crying, but she couldn't persuade the woman who was as fierce as a tiger.
Granny Chun hurriedly stepped in front of Wei Wei, her legs trembling as she pleaded, "Gentlemen, please forgive her... my young mistress is just overwhelmed with grief..."
"She wasn't targeting you personally, so please be magnanimous and don't take it to heart!"
Third Master raised his hand to silence everyone, his expression unreadable as he looked at the woman who was staring intently at him, as if she wanted to tear a hole through him.
He could tell.
To be honest, there wasn't much hatred in her eyes; rather, it was a sense of bewilderment at not knowing what the future held.
After all, the head of the Meng family was dead and another had disappeared, and she didn't even know whether her husband was alive or dead.
In this huge house, she was the only one left in the main room.
Although the uncle and aunt of the second wife had a very bad falling out, with the collapse of the first wife's family, they might be able to quietly reconcile and eventually join forces to take her life and seize the family fortune.
Third Master had a profound understanding of her sudden madness.
He showed a rare degree of leniency towards the prey he had chosen.
“I can understand Madam Meng’s feelings.” He said truthfully, “I will also apply to the prefect to send people to thoroughly clean up the accident outside the city.”
"But the dead cannot be brought back to life. No matter how angry Madam Meng is, it will be of no use. It would be better to save your energy to take care of Master Meng's funeral arrangements."
Wei Wei sobbed and covered her mouth with a handkerchief.
She seemed to have been persuaded and fell silent. She simply leaned on the two maids beside her, silently shedding tears.
Although Third Master didn't show it, he wasn't much better off than her at this moment.
The Meng family members had an accident outside the city, which really caught him off guard.
Although whether this person lives or dies is not important to him, the impact of his death and the development of events are becoming increasingly beyond his control.
This also caused his heart to fluctuate, making it impossible for him to settle down.
He needed to come and see for himself before he could feel a little at ease.
Moreover, the bandits outside the city... calling them bandits is too much of a stretch.
Everything that happened to Wei Wei's family last time was just a setup.
He couldn't be sure if this was also a setup.
The person who killed Master Meng was swift and efficient; anyone with eyes could tell he was a master.
Even he wasn't sure if Madam Meng was truly dead. He simply sent people to search the entire mountain.
Before he arrived, he actually suspected Wei Wei, wondering if she knew something she shouldn't have.
After arriving, he observed her behavior and felt reassured, and began to closely observe the other servants.
Everyone was completely bewildered.
None of them were within his suspicions.
"Where is Master Meng the Second? Has he not returned yet?"
He frowned and looked at the steward who was kneeling in front of Master Meng's corpse, crying miserably.
The steward wiped away his tears before stammering, "Ever since the Second Master and Second Madam had their quarrel, they've been spending all their time in brothels and rarely come back."
"He's probably drunk by now, but it should be time."
As soon as he finished speaking, a ghostly wail burst in from outside. Master Meng Er rushed in, his face pale, crying and shouting, "Big Brother!"
The strong smell of alcohol filled the air, and a man, dazed and confused, knelt before the corpse and wept uncontrollably.
"Brother, why did you leave? Who killed you?"
He cried as he spoke harshly: "Your brother must find the murderer for you and bring peace to your soul in heaven!"
Despite his exaggerated and tragic performance, Wei Wei's gaze towards him was filled with disdain.
With Master Meng dead, you, as his younger brother, are probably only excited.
Not only will they not be blamed or hated, but they will also be able to control the entire Meng family.
