After enduring four days and three nights of arduous travel on the train, we finally arrived at our destination. When we first boarded the train, the sun was blazing hot, making us dizzy. When we got off the train, even though it was still the middle of summer, we didn't feel that dizzy feeling from the heat.
Occasionally, a cool breeze would blow by; this place was truly far to the north. Fortunately, she had some good things with her, so she wasn't worried about getting too hot or too cold.
It seems that ice crystals are not useful in this kind of place; only fire crystals are useful in winter.
After getting off the train, Tang Baozhu followed the flow of people out of the train station and then followed the staff of the educated youth office to an open space outside the train station.
There happened to be a local educated youth office staff member there, holding up a sign. Judging from the handwriting, you could tell that he was a staff member of the local educated youth office.
"Hello everyone, I am a staff member of the Educated Youth Office of Mohe County. Please wait here for a moment while I hand over the responsibilities to my colleagues at the Educated Youth Office. Then I will take you to the commune square. The village brigade leaders below have already come to pick you up, so you can rest soon."
When Tang Baozhu first learned that she was going to work in Mohe County, she found some geographical information in the warehouse and looked it up. She then learned that the county was a city bordering Russia and Inner Mongolia. Although it was a border area, it was still some distance from the border line.
I also know that this place has long hours of sunshine, abundant water resources, and most importantly, a very wide plain.
I don't know why Liu Chunhua assigned her to such a far-away rural area, but since she's already here and has so many supplies, she shouldn't have a bad time.
After the comrades from the educated youth office who brought the educated youth over handed them over to the comrades from the local educated youth office, they went straight back to the train station, presumably having bought their train tickets back in advance.
"Hello everyone, I am a staff member of the Educated Youth Office. My name is Jin Jiali. Please follow me. I will take you to the commune square."
Tang Baozhu looked at the staff member named Jin Jiali and thought he was very tall, probably over 1.9 meters.
Especially since getting off the train, the locals I've met all seem to be tall and strong, even the women are all over 1.65 meters tall, and there are very few under 1.65 meters.
Thinking that I'm only 1.63 meters tall, I feel like a little dwarf when I stand in front of them. What if I get into an argument or fight with them? Would I get slapped to death?
I obediently followed the staff to the commune square. I didn't expect there to be so many educated youths here this time. The square was packed with people, probably a couple hundred.
Tang Baozhu saw some burly men with pipes in their mouths standing on the side, watching the educated youth in the square, chatting amongst themselves, and occasionally pointing and commenting on the educated youth.
It wasn't easy to tell whether they liked or disliked them, but judging from their height and the fact that they weren't too thin, they must be able to eat their fill, otherwise they wouldn't have grown so tall.
"Everyone, please be quiet. If your name is called, please stand to the side."
Looking at the leaders standing on the platform, calling out the names of the educated youth, and each one whose name was called walked to the other side, it was clear that they were being assigned places.
After calling out about a dozen names, the leader called out the name of the brigade leader next to him and asked the village brigade leader to take them away.
One by one, the educated youth were taken away. Soon it was Tang Baozhu's turn. She picked up two packages and went to the side to wait.
Because I wasn't familiar with or knew any of the other people, I didn't join them in conversation. Instead, I waited on the side until everyone was gathered before heading back with the team leader.
Fortunately, she had already eaten lunch on the train, otherwise she would have been starving. She didn't know how far it was from the village; she had heard that there was a possibility of encountering wolves on the way.
When Tang Baozhu walked to the side, she saw Xu Man standing there as well. Now she was sure she hadn't mistaken Xu Man for someone else. She decided to stay away from her in the future and let her experience what it felt like to be run over by a mad bull.
Once everyone had arrived, the leader called out "Jin Dazhu," and then a middle-aged man in his forties with a pipe in his mouth came out.
"Welcome everyone to Xiaosang Village as educated youth. I am the brigade leader of Xiaosang Village. Now that everyone is here, please follow me! The village's horse-drawn carriage is waiting outside."
Hearing the captain speak, Tang Baozhu felt that she was still not fully prepared. At the very least, it took her two minutes to finally understand what the captain meant by his awkward Mandarin.
Even the village head, who is usually considered a very knowledgeable person, speaks Mandarin haltingly, so I imagine the others are probably no better.
No wonder in the little girl's memory, the educated youth and the villagers rarely got together. Given their language barriers, even if they did get together, she wouldn't know what they were saying.
Tang Baozhu decided that once she arrived in the village and settled in, she would overcome the language barrier. She didn't want to have a conversation with the villagers that was like talking to a brick wall, and misunderstandings could easily arise if they couldn't understand each other.
Following the captain to the outside of the square, we saw what he called a horse-drawn carriage: a horse in front pulling a cart made of several planks.
With so many people and such a small cart, it definitely couldn't fit everyone. It must have been used to store everyone's luggage, since everyone had big and small bags. Tang Baozhu had the fewest, with only two bags.
As she had guessed correctly, when the captain led everyone to the carriage, he told everyone to put their luggage on the cart.
"Everyone put their luggage on the cart. There are too many people and there's not enough room to sit on it. Anyway, it's not far, so let's walk back."
"Captain, I'm quite weak and really can't walk anymore. Could I sit down and rest for a while until I feel better, then I can get down and walk again?"
Tang Baozhu glanced at the person who spoke. She remembered that when the leader called out names, she had noted it down. Her name seemed to be Sheng Xueli. Judging from her nice clothes and appearance, she must have been pampered at home.
“No, we’ll wait until you’re too tired to walk before you take turns resting. You can’t rest now. I’m worried about my horses if you’re too tired to walk.”
In Jin Dazhu's eyes, the horse was much more valuable than those educated youth. There were plenty of educated youth who had come to the countryside before, but they were all useless at work. His horse was much more capable.
Tang Baozhu put her two pieces of luggage directly on the carriage. Since she went to the countryside, she had been using wood-type supernatural abilities in her body. Her health was much better than before, and even her complexion was much better. At least she wasn't as sallow as before. Even walking for two hours shouldn't be a problem.
