This is a really strange child.
The blood on the back of her hand had dried; the garbage system was no longer a viable option.
She guessed that the welfare home was probably not doing well and was definitely inhumane. Her body was only six or seven years old and she had no memories of the past, so everything was ominous.
Therefore, she cannot be without the ability to protect herself.
She stretched out her arm and quickly hid a small pencil sharpener in her pocket.
"Host, host, that quack doctor is about to wake up!" the system exclaimed.
A moment later, the quack doctor was choked awake by phlegm. He sat up, muttering incoherent profanities, glanced at Xia Yixin irritably, and, ignoring that the IV drip was empty, staggered out, shouting, "Teacher Li, she's awake, get the hell out of here!"
A middle-aged woman entered shortly afterward. Disgust was in her eyes, but she forced a fake smile onto her face.
"Xiao Yixin is awake? You can't make the dean angry again next time. He's doing this for your own good. Are you hungry? Come on, let's go out to eat with Teacher Li." Teacher Li hates girls the most. Girls are worthless these days. She especially hates this girl. If it weren't for a foreign Chinese person who suddenly asked to see her, she really wouldn't have let her out. At such a young age, she already knows how to seduce the dean. Why doesn't she just kill herself?
Without information about this world, Xia Yixin could only proceed cautiously, speaking and acting sparsely while gathering information.
She remained expressionless as the woman called Aunt Li led her out of the room.
The mottled walls and old decorative paintings she saw along the way confirmed her guess: this was a poorly managed welfare home. She was on the first floor, with wooden staircases that were almost 90 degrees apart from the other floors. There were a lot of miscellaneous items piled up under the stairs. The first floor had a medical room and teachers' dormitories, the second floor had a dining hall, classrooms, and student dormitories, and she didn't know about the floors above the third floor.
The restaurant and kitchen are connected, and the space is no more than half the size of a basketball court. It was lunchtime for the children inside, but the atmosphere was strangely oppressive and quiet.
There were more than twenty children of all ages, the oldest being around ten years old and the youngest only one or two years old and still needing to be held by the teacher. Including Teacher Li next to her, there were only three female teachers in total. The kitchen was empty, so it seemed that they were the ones who cooked for them.
"Oh, Teacher Li, you're here. The child is awake? Is he alright?" The other two teachers greeted Teacher Li as she entered.
"What else could happen? She's lucky to be alive. If that brat hadn't heard her knocking, he probably would have been burned out. Anyway, as long as there aren't any obvious injuries on her body, she can rest for a few days before those people come again." Teacher Li pushed Xia Yixin toward the dining table with disdain. "Sit down quickly."
Xia Yixin was pushed to the dining table, and the three women went to eat together, while the teacher ate alone at another table, with three dishes and a soup.
Meanwhile, on the long table in front of the twenty-odd children was a large bowl of noodles. A few of the younger children were secretly glancing at Xia Yixin with blank stares, while the others buried their heads in their food.
Was she rescued because a child heard her knocking on the door? She only remembered the child's peculiar, cool fragrance, pure and unpretentious.
She sat down in the only empty seat, and as soon as she did, the child sitting to her right moved over.
Could it be that she smells bad?
That's impossible. She checked that her clothes had been changed and her wounds had been cleaned when she woke up.
However, she soon found out the reason. Teacher Li placed the three dishes and soup in front of her on an iron plate, and she clearly heard the sound of the child swallowing hard.
It turns out they weren't avoiding the smell, but the fragrance.
Perhaps because she is a patient, she received special treatment today.
Xia Yixin was indeed hungry, and she couldn't care less about anything else. She lowered her head and slowly started eating. Even though the food was prepared by the teacher, it wasn't very oily. However, she was recovering from a serious illness and hadn't chewed her food like this for a long time. In the later stages of muscle atrophy, she could only drink liquid food, so she ate very slowly and carefully.
The teachers were eating with their backs to the children, and the children were unusually quiet, with only the older children occasionally glancing at her with mocking eyes, as if she were something dirty, for some unknown reason.
While eating, Xia Yixin secretly observed the area. Suddenly, someone quickly placed a piece of chicken into her bowl from her left.
Those hands that held the chopsticks were smaller and thinner than her.
Xia Yixin was startled. He turned his head and met a pair of obsidian-like eyes. The eyes were deep yet pure, and a clear look of panic flashed across them. Then he turned his head and almost buried his face in his rice bowl.
It turned out to be the little wolf cub-like boy she had seen before. She hadn't paid attention to him before, but now she could smell his faint, cool fragrance. Just as she remembered, it was like the cold snow of winter, pure and cold. This was the boy who heard her knocking.
He was eating the same food as her. Did she also have injuries? He picked at the few grains of rice left in his bowl, as if he were competing with someone.
Xia Yixin found the boy interesting, and with a slight smile, she put the chicken back on her plate. "Thank you, I'm full."
There wasn't much meat in the chicken carcass, but it was clearly a precious commodity in this orphanage.
The boy's ears turned bright red in response.
Despite looking like a little wolf cub, he was a really cute kid, and he even saved her life, so she immediately felt a sense of goodwill towards him.
Suddenly, a soft cough broke the silence, and the child, who had been as quiet as a chicken, flinched, as if afraid of the person who had pushed open the door.
