Chapter 49: I will hold up an umbrella for my wife and children, and protect them well under my wings.
After Su Niannian finished speaking, she felt a sense of relief, as if a weight had been lifted from her heart.
She gripped her chopsticks tightly, head bowed, waiting anxiously for Gu Yuheng's response.
Su Niannian knew perfectly well that the child in her belly was not conceived by Gu Yuheng of his own volition, but rather that she had become pregnant unexpectedly after begging him for help that day.
If he doesn't want to admit it, she can't morally blackmail him.
The atmosphere froze for a moment.
Su Niannian waited anxiously for Gu Yuheng's answer, as if she had a rabbit in her heart.
But all I could clearly hear was the heavy breathing from the other side.
She never received a response from the man.
"If you don't want them, I can raise them myself."
Do you think I'm dead?
The heavy breathing mixed with roars frightened the little rabbit so much that its eyes turned red.
Seeing Su Niannian looking at him timidly, biting her lip tightly, looking helpless and pitiful, Gu Yuheng quickly suppressed his excitement.
"Niannian, I didn't mean to yell at you. I was just too excited and couldn't control my voice. The child in your belly is our child. How could I not want it?"
His eyes were filled with turbulent emotions, and something seemed to have touched the softest part of his heart.
How could he not like their child?
Su Niannian sniffed, her small nose was red, and two teardrops hung at the corners of her eyes.
"Yuheng, are you really sure? Do you want babies?"
Having a child is not a game; it's a lifelong responsibility. If you're not prepared and can't support your child, it's better not to have them at all.
Although Su Niannian is only twenty years old, she has very mature thoughts when faced with important matters.
“I never act impulsively, and I never regret what I say. I think things through carefully. Actually, my selfish desire is to have a child of my own.”
Su Niannian did not feel relaxed because of his words.
She thought about practical problems.
Her contractual marriage with Gu Yuheng was an obstacle between them, an insurmountable chasm.
"But we're getting a divorce in a year, so what will happen to the children then...?"
A hint of helplessness flashed in Gu Yuheng's eyes before he got up and walked to her side.
A warm, dry hand landed on the little girl's head.
“Su Niannian, what did I tell you back then?”
Su Niannian looked up at his gentle face.
I think Gu Yuheng is a really good-tempered person.
He has always been emotionally stable and very responsible.
If he really likes babies, then wouldn't he be a great dad?
Under his loving care, the baby can grow up healthy and carefree.
But then she thought, what if he wants a divorce in the future? The Gu family is wealthy and powerful, and if they want the child, what methods can she use to keep the baby by her side?
"You said our marriage would last a year, and that you would receive a generous settlement after the divorce."
The helplessness in Gu Yuheng's eyes deepened.
"Su Niannian, you really are a little money-grubber. I said so much to you that day, and all you remember is that I promised to give you a generous compensation."
Su Niannian: "......."
Gu Yuheng: "Didn't I say that we should try to get along? If we felt it wasn't right, I would let you go after a year? I automatically ignored what Su Niannian said after that."
"I'm afraid you'll divorce me and take the children..."
Gu Yuheng suddenly bent down, placed one hand on the table, tilted his head slightly, and stared intently at Su Niannian with his deep gaze.
His voice was low and somber: "What? Su Niannian, you're not still thinking about leaving me, are you?"
"No." Su Niannian shook her head.
Gu Yuheng grabbed her chin, forcing her to look him in the eye; there was no way she could escape from him.
“I have kept our marriage certificate. We will not get a divorce, so you can rest assured. The baby is our child, our bloodline, and we will raise them together.”
Su Niannian knew Gu Yuheng's character; he never broke his promises.
His solemn promise put Su Niannian's mind at ease.
Even if she and Gu Yuheng don't love each other, they can still be a respectful couple, so the baby can have both a father and a mother.
She couldn't bear to part with her babies, and they seemed to be saying: Mom, don't abandon us.
Thinking of this, Su Niannian's heart clenched; the bond of blood could not be severed.
Even though she was only twenty years old, she couldn't bear to abort her baby.
Therefore, not divorcing Gu Yuheng is the best solution.
"Niannian, don't worry, I will be a good husband and a good father in the future. I will use all my strength to hold up an umbrella for my wife and children and protect you under my wings so that you will not be hurt in the slightest."
“You can question my work ability, but you don’t need to worry about my ability as a husband and father, or my sense of responsibility.”
Gu Yuheng sat down next to her.
As he spoke, he grasped Su Niannian's small hand, tightly enveloping it in his large palm.
Su Niannian gazed at his expression, deep and calm. Gu Yuheng always gave off an aloof feeling.
However, after spending more time with him, Su Niannian realized that he wasn't as ruthless as the rumors suggested.
She's always been very gentle and patient with herself.
"Thank you. In all my years, besides my grandma, you are the best person in the world to me."
“My parents don’t like me. In my mother’s eyes, I’m like an eyesore of trash. No matter what I do, it’s wrong, and I get beaten and scolded by her at the drop of a hat. So when I was little, I often wondered if I was picked up from a trash can, which is why they dislike me so much.”
Su Niannian wasn't complaining to Gu Yuheng; she was genuinely grateful to him.
Gu Yuheng listened to Su Niannian's fragmented words, but he knew that this was only one side of the story; the little girl's life had been much more difficult than that since childhood.
It felt as if a blunt knife had pierced his chest.
The pain was so intense it was suffocating.
He pulled Su Niannian into his arms, his chin gently resting on her shoulder.
"Parents who don't love their children are not worth your sadness. Many people will cherish you and treat you like a precious treasure in the future. Don't let other people's mistakes cause you pain."
Su Niannian buried her head in his shoulder, her voice muffled: "Yeah, I know."
Suddenly, the sound of a heavy vehicle turning off came from outside.
Then came Su Xin's affected, high-pitched voice.
"Young Master Shen, Su Niannian lives here. She bullies me because she's my sister. You have to stand up for me, otherwise how am I supposed to live here?"
As her voice trailed off.
A loud crash as glass shattered ripped through the night sky.
