Chapter 5 An Unexpected Incident in the Dead of Night

"Mom! I've come to pick Bingbing up and take her home."

Just as Grandma was instructing Grandpa on how to hang the clothes, a farm tricycle stopped in front of the house, and the person riding on it was Chen Bing's mother, the beautiful Ms. Liu Yue.

As soon as she arrived at the door, she saw her adorable son sitting in a basket by the door. She jumped off the tricycle and walked over to Chen Bing, picked him up, and gave him a big kiss.

Good-looking people look good even when they're driving a tricycle.

Looking at her mother's beauty in her youth, Chen Bing was reminded of herself in her past life. Overall, she resembled a handsome man, but she couldn't be described as particularly good-looking.

On the one hand, she is only 176 cm tall but weighs 160 kg, so she looks a bit fat.

Secondly, some people like to lick their teeth when they are losing their baby teeth, which causes each tooth to grow out of place and look unsightly in adulthood.

Another issue is the tendency to pick at pimples during puberty, which can lead to acne scars and pits all over the face later on.

Finally, and most importantly, I'm a typical science guy. I'm usually quite unkempt and don't care much about my appearance, and I also really enjoy playing certain two-word games.

These factors combined ultimately shaped the image of a disgusting, overweight otaku in the eyes of online trolls.

Although I learned my lesson after starting university and paid more attention to my image, even painfully deleting a certain two-word game, it was unfortunately too late.

For years, he couldn't correct his hunched back and dull eyes. In the end, he ruined a promising start.

Getting back to the main point, Liu Yue now runs a breakfast stall near the town's primary school, selling things like vegetable pancakes and porridge every morning, and she's very busy.

So every morning at three or four o'clock, I had to get up, put the sleeping Chen Bing at her parents' house on the other side of the village, and then ride my tricycle for several miles to the town to take care of things.

Getting up so early every day, plus spending several hours a day frying vegetable pancakes in a dark and cramped breakfast stall, caused her to lose her youthful beauty and vitality before she was even in her thirties, turning into a completely haggard old woman.

"Mommy! I'm taking Bingbing with me!"

"Okay! Go ahead, I'll help you with the farm work after I finish mine!"

Grandma stayed in the yard and didn't come out, but she called out twice from a distance.

After receiving a reply, Liu Yue put Chen Bing, along with the small basket Chen Bing was sitting in, on the back of the tricycle, then pedaled the tricycle back home.

About an hour or two later, Grandma walked into the kitchen carrying a rolling pin.

Days passed by leisurely, and the chirping of cicadas, along with the summer breeze, drifted into the small house. He sat to one side watching his mother and grandmother busily preparing the dough, kneading it, chopping the filling, tearing off a piece of dough, rolling it into a flatbread, and then stuffing it with a generous amount of filling.

The mother and daughter chatted incessantly about the trivialities of life, their mouths never stopping. Their voices drowned out the poetic summer, yet shaped Chen Bing's childhood memories.

My memories of being three or four years old are just fragments, and in those fragments, my mother was just as busy as she is now, but much more silent than she is now.

Life is always full of tragedy, but what is more tragic than the tragedy itself is the people living in it.

Struggling but unable to escape fate, roaring but to no avail. They could only watch helplessly as the anticipated black rhinoceros slowly approached, not knowing when it would truly arrive.

So, which will come first, tomorrow or an accident?

...

Two weeks later, a commotion at home woke Chen Bing from her deep sleep. It was around two or three in the morning, and Liu Yue was not by her side. All the lights in the house were on.

Chen Bing had a bad feeling.

He swayed as he climbed out of bed and went to the living room to see what was happening outside.

Just as he was climbing out, Liu Yue happened to push the door open and came in.

She covered her mouth with one hand, her eyes red and swollen as if she had been crying intensely. When she saw Chen Bing crawling out of the bedroom, she sobbed softly, then said in a gentle tone mixed with tears, "Baby, it's okay, it's okay, Mommy will carry you back to sleep."

Seeing her like this, Chen Bing roughly guessed what had happened.

Before he could react, Liu Yue carried him back to bed. She gently patted his back, trying to lull him to sleep as soon as possible.

Chen Bing pretended to be asleep, and when Liu Yue left, he rolled over and got out of bed, then followed her to her doorstep from a distance.

"Oh, what brings you here again?"

As Liu Yue reached her front door, she inadvertently saw Chen Bing following behind her. She frowned, turned around, picked him up, and prepared to take him back to his room.

"How can I sleep at a time like this?" Chen Bing struggled and cried out, trying her best to convey to Liu Yue her reluctance to go back.

Seeing him like this, Liu Yue had no choice but to carry him out of the house.

After a series of turns, Liu Yue carried Chen Bing to his maternal grandmother's house.

This place is also brightly lit.

Besides my maternal grandfather, my maternal grandmother's house also housed a group of neighbors. Many people were crammed into this small house, but my maternal grandmother was nowhere to be seen.

"Did my mother send it?"

As soon as she entered, Liu Yue asked the crowd.

“They’ve gone, they’ve gone. Your second brother took them to the hospital on his motorcycle. Your second uncle’s eldest son went too.”

One of the people in the crowd responded to her in this way, and after he finished speaking, everyone fell silent again.

Liu Yue was sobbing softly, while her grandfather kept smoking his pipe, his lips trembling slightly, his head always bowed.

Wisps of smoke billowed from his nose or mouth, filling the entire room with a smoky haze.

"Moon Child, take Bingbing back with you. What's the point of leaving the child here?"

After a long silence, Grandpa suddenly said this to Liu Yue.

"Dad, Bingbing insisted on coming."

Grandpa wanted to refute her, but after thinking about Chen Bing's intelligence, he ultimately said nothing, simply stubbed out his cigarette, and crossed his arms.

A few minutes later, the roar of a motorcycle came from afar, breaking the tranquility of the village at night.

Upon hearing this voice, everyone's hearts tightened at first, and then they saw Chen Bing's aunt, Liu Jing, with her big pregnant belly, come in with her husband.

As soon as she entered, she hurriedly asked the people present what was going on.

Half an hour ago, she was awakened by a rapid phone call. When she picked up the phone, she saw that it was her second uncle from her hometown calling.

As soon as the call connected, her second uncle started yelling that her mother had been admitted to the hospital and that she should come home immediately to check on her.

After receiving the call, she and her husband rushed back from the town without stopping, still completely unaware of what was happening.

One of the people present immediately explained to her after hearing her question: "At midnight tonight, your mother said she had a severe headache and chest tightness. Your father thought it was an old problem, so he gave your mother some medicine. After taking the medicine, the two of them went to sleep."

To my surprise, your mother felt increasingly unwell in the middle of the night, and even after taking the medicine again, it didn't help. Then your father ran outside to call for help, and when he came back a few minutes later, he found your mother lying on the ground, unable to open her eyes. Her eyeballs were rolled back, and she was barely clinging to life.

Everyone realized something was wrong, so they rushed your second brother to take her to the hospital. It's been over twenty minutes now.
