Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Later, when Shi Yu woke up, Aunt Wang gave him something, saying that Yun Lin'ai asked her to give it before leaving.

Shi Yu was lost in thought as he stared at the new phone in his hand. Aunt Wang's earnest words echoed in his ears, "You're too old to not have a phone. What if someone wants to contact you?"

Her previous cell phone was confiscated before she went to prison, but there is no one she wants to contact until now. Even her mother Shi Yu doesn't want to have any connection with her anymore.

He fiddled with his expensive-looking new phone, the same model Yun Lin'ai owned. He then flipped to his address book. There were only two numbers at the top: Yun Lin'ai, Doctor Qin Yue, and Aunt Wang.

For the first time, Shi Yu felt a deep sense of panic. His heartbeat seemed even faster than yesterday, even though he hadn't had tea today. For some unknown reason, he pressed the dial button for the first contact and, feeling uneasy, put the communicator to his ear.

The only sounds in the room were the breeze and a few beeps after the call was connected. He had dialed the number with the mentality that the call would not be connected. Just when he was about to give up and hang up, someone picked up the phone.

"Shi Yu?"

Yun Lin'ai called Shi Yu's name on the other end of the line. Shi Yu hurriedly concealed his panic and just said "hmm".

"Is there something you want to talk to me about?" The other party's voice was still cold and indifferent, but Shi Yu was no longer as confused as before.

"Nothing, just thank you for the phone. I'd better not give it to you next time. It's very expensive."

Yun Lin'ai was still on the way to the mission site. This time they were in plain clothes and on a ship at sea. He was still in an action meeting when his pocket rang. The signal in the meeting room was not good, so he paused the meeting and walked to the deck to answer the phone. However, the wind was so loud that it was difficult for him to grasp Shi Yu's emotions.

"You seem easily satisfied."

Yun Lin'ai's words made Shi Yu stunned for a moment. His lower lip was bitten with several marks, and his fingers kept rubbing on his trouser legs. He always felt nervous involuntarily when facing Yun Lin'ai.

“…Is that so?”

Yun Linai seemed ready to continue chatting with him, with no intention of hanging up. "I'm not picky about food, and I don't like to play. Apart from reading, I don't have any particular likes or dislikes. I listen carefully to what others say."

Yun Lin'ai leaned against the railing, his eyes casually admiring the waves cut by the ship on the calm blue sea, and said slowly, "Are you really that easy to raise?"

He changed the phrase "living under someone else's roof" to make it sound more like that. Shi Yu bit his dry and chapped lips, and the stinging pain brought him back to his senses.

"Well, I'm not picky about anything."

He was eager to prove that he was easy to support, fearing that others would abandon him because once he left Area 116, he would be captured again. No one except Yun Lin'ai would be willing to take him in, and he would not know how he would be tortured to death.

A chuckle came from the other end of the communicator close to his ear, and Shi Yu's face suddenly began to feel hot.

"I'll take your word for now."

The tone was frivolous and helpless, making Shi Yu feel that the other party might not believe a word of it.

The call between the two was interrupted by the poor signal on Yun Lin'ai's side. The sea breeze brought with it a salty and humid smell, bringing with it the end of winter and endless thoughts, like waves leaping high and then falling heavily.

The temperature in the northwest region is extremely cold, with endless mountains, rivers and lakes. Colorful prayer flags flutter in the wind and yellow sand flying all over the sky. Driving on the long highway, the more remote the area, the more mountains there are. Hidden in the land between the mountains and rivers, there are too many hunters hiding in the dark, and an unknown undercurrent is surging.

The team led by Yun Lin'ai rested for half a day in the safe area where they were stationed. In the evening, they went to each area in small teams to explore the road conditions and look for the source of the virus spread.

Yun Linai met with the commander's advisor stationed in the northwest region to discuss the next plan.

The other party was also an S-level alpha, about the same age as Yun Lin'ai, but perhaps because of the dry climate in the northwest region, the commander had cold features and slightly wheat-colored skin. Although he seemed to be keeping strangers at arm's length, he was polite and thoughtful, a person worthy of admiration.

It was only when the other party accidentally learned that Yun Lin'ai was the son of the alliance chairman that his expression became very bad. After the meeting, Lu Yichuan approached from behind Yun Lin'ai and said, "That commander seems to dislike you."

Yun Lin'ai fiddled with his phone, which had no signal, for a while, his expression calm. "It's normal."

"The chairman has been making a lot of small moves recently. His mind is no longer on work."

In order to leave a good impression in front of the public and let others clean up his mess, Yun Che could not hide his ambition from the very beginning.

"And I'm his son, so of course people think this family is no good, so how could they possibly be nice to me?"

Yun Lin'ai saw things clearly and never cared about what others thought of him. Lu Yichuang's nerves, which had been tense all day, finally relaxed. He plucked a piece of withered foxtail grass and played with it in his hand.

"The chairman wants too much, he wants to hold it all in his hands, and he doesn't even want you, his son, to have any of it. But what he doesn't know is that you don't even bother to have these things."

The crescent moon was already high overhead. The temperature in the northwest region was very low at night. In the separate courtyard of the headquarters, Yun Lin'ai and Lu Yichuan sat on a large rock and talked aimlessly. Yun Lin'ai remained silent for a long time. Only when Lu Yichuan, trembling, wanted to go back, did he mutter to himself, "Not necessarily."

Lu Yichuang looked at Yun Lin'ai in surprise, but he understood what the other party meant almost instantly.

It's not about climbing up step by step to satisfy his own selfish desires, but when he has a weak spot behind him and has the urge to change the status quo, he must become stronger and more indestructible.

Soon, the commander had a great change in his opinion of Yun Linai.

The first mission went exceptionally smoothly. They sealed off a research institute in the mountains ten kilometers away. However, during the final arrest operation, a researcher hiding in the dark appeared behind the commander, holding a gun pointed at his back. He was controlling another person and had no time to react. Yun Lin'ai sensed the danger and immediately tackled him to the ground. The bullet grazed his shoulder by a hair's breadth and was pinned to the wall in front of the two men.

The researcher with the gun was controlled, and the two were still sitting on the ground in a daze. Yun Lin'ai was the first to react, and he was still a little scared of the danger that just came within a second.

He stubbornly said, “It seems that Commander Shen is eating well in the northwest.”

The other party heard that he was secretly mocking him for not training enough, but he didn't get angry. He just stood up, his face calm again, and stretched out a hand to Yun Linai, "I owe you a favor."

Yun Linai's face was very grim. "It's just a minor injury. How dare I make you owe me a favor." Having said that, he still pulled the other person's arm and stood up.

The two men withdrew their team and returned to the command center. Yun Lin'ai asked the doctor to bandage his wound simply, and then he stood alone outside the yard again, holding a cigarette given to him by someone. He lit it but did not smoke it until the cigarette butt burned out. He caught a glimpse of a figure standing stealthily outside the yard. The figure was thin but wrapped in a thick coat.

His eyes lit up when he saw Yun Linai, "Hello, I'm looking for someone."

Yun Linai didn't want to pay attention to him and put out his cigarette, "This is not the place you should be."

After saying that, he turned around and was about to go back, but he didn't expect the other party to be anxious, "I'm looking for Shen Shaowei, can you help me call him!"

Chen Shaowei was the commander's name. Yun Lin'ai raised his eyebrows as he looked at the man, as if he was surprised that the other party would call a commander by his full name.

Just as he was about to say something, a man ran out of the silent command building, ran past Yun Lin'ai with steady steps, and asked the person on duty to open the door. Lu Yichuan noticed it as soon as he came out. He seemed surprised by the commander's action. Remembering the look he had given Yun Lin'ai, he couldn't help but say something a little strange, "Lieutenant Shen, don't you know that outsiders are not allowed in the command center?"

Without even a glance at the two people behind him, Shen Shaowei cupped the cheeks of the person in front of him with both hands, his movements gentle, "Why are you out in such a cold weather? Didn't I ask you to wait for me at home?"

It was then that Lu Yichuan noticed that the other person was a beta. His eyes instantly became sharp, and the gossip in his heart that had been extinguished by Yun Lin'ai was rekindled. However, he never expected that Shen Shaowei would put his arm around the other person's shoulders and introduce them to them: "This is my younger brother, Chi Yang."

Although he was a beta, his tone was gentle, his clear eyes rippling with layers of water waves, soft and docile, he greeted them humbly and politely, "Hello."

However, it was cold, and Shen Shaowei was reluctant to let people stay outdoors for too long. After the introduction, he took everyone to his dormitory, leaving Yun Lin'ai and Lu Yichuang behind. Finally, he comforted Chi Yang. When Shen Shaowei came out, he saw the two of them still sitting in the yard chatting. One of them looked up at the moon, as if he was homesick.

Facing Lu Yichuan's questions, Shen Shaowei never shied away from the question, "I adopted this little brother and have been raising him by my side since he was eight years old."

Among the three people present, he was the only one who took a few puffs of the cigarette, and then let the cold wind blow away the odor on his body. Chi Yang didn't like the smell of cigarettes.

Yun Lin'ai sized him up and said pointedly, "What should you do if you're susceptible to infection?"

Shen Shaowei looked at him with obvious surprise, and couldn't help but chuckled, with some helplessness in his tone: "He is still young and doesn't understand these."

Yun Lin'ai had no habit of prying into other people's emotions. Noticing something was amiss between the two, he didn't ask any more questions. That night, the three grown men didn't chat for long. Shen Shaowei, under the pretext of taking care of his younger brother, rushed back to the dormitory. Yun Lin'ai was still lost in thought, fiddling with his phone, which had automatically shut down. Only Lu Yichuan idly asked him, "Who are you waiting for a call?"

Yun Lin'ai ignored him, put away his phone, stood up, and looked down at him. "Did you succeed in getting Dr. Jiang?"

After saying that, he left without looking back, leaving Lu Yichuang alone to look up at the moon, then let out a long sigh in this silent and cold courtyard.
