Chapter 001 The God of Rice Appears
At the end of October, the heat that lasted for the entire summer finally dissipated a little. The rice mills ran day and night, immersing the entire village in the rumbling sound of harvest.
Late summer and early autumn are the busy farming seasons.
In the vast rice fields sparkling with golden fragments, rice ears are bulging with heavy bellies, and the air is filled with the fragrance of soil and plants.
Bai Su, wearing a straw hat and white-lined work gloves, led his little cousin who had just entered junior high school to harvest rice in the fields.
Bai Qiuqiu wiped the sweat from her forehead with her dark little hands and sighed, "It's not a festival, why are we having a holiday? I might as well be studying in school."
The autumn sun is not much milder than the summer sun.
Although she complained, Bai Qiuqiu didn't stop working at all.
Bai Su smiled and said, "Harvest is the most grand festival of the year."
He casually put a few caryopsis seeds into his mouth, crushed them with his teeth, and savored the rich aroma of rice and the astringent taste of grass.
These golden and plump rice fruits, after threshing, screening, drying and other processes, will become rice, an important staple food that every household must have for every meal.
Bai Su's hometown is one of the most important grain-producing areas in the south, and the people here have an innate worship of the land.
After failing the civil service exam for the second time, Bai Su felt increasingly out of place in the bustling big city, so he packed his bags and returned to his hometown to help his uncle farm.
Bai Su's parents died early, and his uncle's family farmed to support his studies. Because of his love for land and food, he lived up to everyone's expectations and was admitted to the best agricultural university in the country, and went to a laboratory in a big city to study scientific planting.
But after more than 20 years of twists and turns in his life, he has now returned to this golden rice field, taking his uncle's son to harvest rice, just like one spring more than ten years ago, when Bai Su's parents had just passed away, his uncle took him to sow in the fields, hoping that the good harvest would allow them to earn some money to pay for the tuition of young Bai Su.
The land always gives unreservedly to those who believe in it.
In the endless golden rice fields, many half-grown boys are sweating under the guidance of their fathers and brothers, while the girls are carefully bundling the rice ears with their elders and taking them back to the village for processing.
Bai Qiuqiu imitated the moves he saw in martial arts movies and waved the obviously smaller lawn mowing sickle randomly a few times: "I'm in middle school, why are you still giving me a small one?" He said, looking at the "adult version" in Bai Su's hand.
Bai Su took one look at the sickle in his hand and chuckled, "You're using the one I used when I was a kid. It's older than you."
The schools in the village are not like those in the city, which only follow statutory holidays. During many busy farming seasons, they will also give children appropriate holidays so that they can participate in the work with the adults in the family.
The principal of Bai Qiuqiu's school was Bai Su's Chinese teacher back then.
Bai Su still remembers that the Chinese teacher was the first person in the village to buy a rice huller. One summer night more than ten years ago, amid the fragrance of rice and the croaking of frogs, rice husks were flying and rice bran was all over the ground. For the first time, Bai Su experienced what it meant to "speak of a good harvest amid the fragrance of rice flowers and listen to the croaking of frogs."
This year, there was abundant rain and a good harvest. The whole village was working around the clock. The men were harvesting rice and the women were husking the rice. They dared not stop for a moment, for fear of delaying the harvest and letting down nature's kindness.
"Bai Su - the eldest son of the Bai family!" A voice with a strong rural accent came from a distance.
Hearing this, Bai Su quickly straightened up, waved to the old village secretary who was walking towards him, and said, "Uncle, I'm here."
Bai Su is tall and well-proportioned. His thin muscles make him look very strong. His skin is fair and shiny like his mother's, and it never gets tanned no matter how much it is exposed to the sun. This is in stark contrast to Bai Qiuqiu, who is pitch black at a young age.
"Oh, I'm running myself to death." The old village party secretary panted, "Go back to the village quickly. You can repair machines, right? That Piey Mu or something machine, the rice mill, it won't work again!"
The Oshima rice huller PMJ20 is the only imported one in the entire village and is very valuable.
Bai Su nodded and agreed: "I can repair it. I learned it in school."
He knows a little about things related to agriculture, and whenever the villagers encounter any difficult situations, they will ask him for help.
Hearing him say this, the old village party secretary felt relieved.
The processing work after harvesting rice is particularly important. After finishing this crop, we have to start the next round of sowing without stopping. Machines can work much faster than manual labor.
After the autumnal equinox, the days became shorter. Seeing that the sun was about to set, Bai Su quickly put down the work in his hands, called Bai Qiuqiu, and went back to the village to repair the machine.
Bai Qiuqiu was unwilling to go with him.
"Cousin, you go back first. I will come back after harvesting two more crops." Although the little boy liked to complain, he treasured these hard-earned crops in his heart.
The family's food and his studies all depend on this rice.
Bai Su didn't force him. Most children in the countryside grow up early, and Bai Qiuqiu, who was only ten years old, was already someone that adults could rest assured about.
So Bai Su put his straw hat on Bai Qiuqiu's head, gave her a few simple instructions, and then, with a handful of rice ears in his hand, he walked quickly towards the village at the urging of the old village party secretary.
Bai Su knew that when he returned to his hometown in the countryside to farm, besides his uncle and aunt who raised him, the person who was happiest was the old village party secretary who also watched him grow up.
When he was a child, when his uncle and aunt were busy with farm work, Bai Su ate at many different houses, and the one he visited most often was the home of the old village party secretary.
The old village party secretary knew that Bai Su had taken the civil service exam before, so he mentioned it to him several times and asked him to take over his position as village party secretary. This is also an official position!
In fact, Bai Su didn't want to be an official. He took the civil service exam only because, in the minds of the general public, a stable job is the best.
After the defeat in World War II, Bai Su returned to the countryside in despair. The moment he took off his shoes and walked barefoot into the paddy field to plant rice as he did in his childhood, he suddenly realized that if he had a skill, he could grow food to feed himself - he had had a solid iron rice bowl many years ago.
The sun was setting in the west, and the orchid sky was filled with a dazzling starry sky that had never been seen in the city. Bai Su was walking on a winding country road, thinking about the precious machine in the village. He was not paying attention and stepped on empty air, and his whole body fell uncontrollably into the ridge of the field.
A golden light flashed by, and before Bai Su could even scream, he disappeared from the spot in an instant.
·
East Continent, the capital of the Wenk Empire, Boeing Town.
Bai Su's face was ashen and his eyes were red. He spent the whole night mentally preparing himself before he finally accepted the reality that he seemed to have traveled through time.
Bai Su clearly remembered that the moment the feeling of weightlessness came, the rice ears in his hand suddenly burst out with a golden light, and then the sky and the earth spun.
It was as if someone had hooked his belly button with an ice-cold iron hook. During the long and nauseating shock, Bai Su's consciousness gradually became blurred.
After a long time, when he opened his eyes again, he saw a sky full of stars.
But the surrounding buildings were not familiar to him.
On the low hills, wooden houses with red roofs and white walls are scattered in an orderly manner, like round-headed mushrooms, with occasional faint candlelight shining through; almost every house is surrounded by a small courtyard, connected by narrow paths dotted with wild flowers and pebbles; a river runs through the entire area, with an arch bridge standing in between, like a magical fantasy town in a fairy tale.
The subtle chirping of insects added a vibrant color to the town. A breeze blew over, and Bai Su smelled a faint floral fragrance mixed with moisture.
This scene obviously had nothing to do with his hometown in the countryside.
Bai Su looked stupidly at the European-style buildings that were looming in the night. He pinched his arm with his hand, grimacing in pain, and then he was sure that he was not dreaming.
He was standing in what barely amounted to a garden, milling about aimlessly, trying to dig the camera out of the sparse grass.
Unsuccessful, he walked into the two-story wooden house behind him and groped for a long time before finally finding a few candles. In the dim candlelight, he looked through the items in the house one by one.
The exquisite carved tea sets, the pastoral-style sofas and curtains, the ancient sword hanging on the wall and the map on the table... all indicate that Bai Su has really come to a strange place.
As early as the strange physical sensation after the fall, he vaguely realized that he seemed to have encountered something that modern science could not explain.
——Travel through time.
Bai Su found a glass mirror in the bathroom. Through it, he saw his own miserable appearance in tattered clothes and depressed spirits.
He turned on the tap and washed his face.
The shock of the cold water calmed him down instantly.
Bai Su tiptoed carefully and checked every corner of the house. He didn't see a single living person, but the house was very clean. There was no dust on the table, and the bed was soft and fluffy, as if it had just been exposed to the sun during the day.
Where did the owner of the house go?
Anyway, there was no one here now, which gave Bai Su, who had just arrived, some respite.
The maps on the table and the hand-bound books on the bookshelf were all in Chinese. Bai Su couldn't help but complain that it turned out that the whole world was speaking Chinese.
Bai Su was struggling with his conscience all night long.
His mind kept screaming "What the hell is this place? I want to go home", but his body was extremely calm, mechanically absorbing information from everywhere so that he could blend into the environment as safely as possible and not be noticed by the people here.
A gentleman does not stand under a dangerous wall. Thinking of this, Bai Su apologized to the owner of the house who was nowhere to be found, and then without hesitation took out some suitable clothes from the bedroom closet and changed into them, and hid his original clothes under the bed.
Although the style of the clothes was a bit complicated, men's clothing was never that complicated. After changing into a loose short coat with a medieval European style, Bai Su still held the rice ear that came with him tightly in his hand, as if it was his spiritual pillar.
He prayed that perhaps someday, with the blessing of the Rice God, he would be able to return to his original world.
…
In the early morning, with the cheerful singing of birds, the day in Boeing Town officially begins.
Bai Su was peeking through the window on the second floor.
Not far away, there were figures walking by a red mushroom-like wooden house from time to time. A fat woman carried a bamboo basket, sent the naughty child out, and then returned to the house. After a while, a thin mist floated out of the chimney. Bai Su opened the window a crack and smelled the faint aroma of nut bread in the air.
Bai Su rubbed his stomach. He was hungry.
He was just about to go to the kitchen to see if there was anything to eat when he saw a group of centaurs, armed with sharp weapons and wearing robes and armor, marching towards him on the river bank in the distance.
Bai Su widened his eyes in disbelief.
The upper body is a human torso, the lower body is a horse's body, the waist and the horse's shoulders are naturally integrated, and the four legs are strong and slender... It is indeed the classic image of the centaur in ancient Greek mythology, and there is no difference from the sculpture that Bai Su had seen in the art museum.
Could it be that I traveled through a magical world where humans and beasts coexist?
The rationality that Bai Su had finally gathered up was shattered once again.
Bai Su, who was stunned by the scene before him, just came to his senses and found that the Centaur army had passed the low hill and came to his house.
"Knock knock knock—" There was a knock on the door.
"Sir, the guards are conducting a routine inspection." A deep voice came from the corner.
Bai Su quickly responded: "Please, please wait a moment!"
He ran downstairs, fearing that if he was late, these centaur soldiers would rush in without caring and find the clothes from another world that he had hidden under the bed in his bedroom.
Standing in front of the gate, Bai Su took a deep breath to cheer himself up and tried to stay calm.
Don't be afraid, Bai Su. You're a high-level intellectual who went to university in the city. What haven't you seen? These are just a few centaurs, the remnants of the feudal society of ancient Greece. They won't discover your secret. You're a 985 university student. Your IQ will definitely crush these half-beast creatures.
Don't be nervous, pretend everything is normal, open the door——
Bai Su opened the door with trembling hands.
The gentle morning sunlight pours into the room.
"Routine inspection by the guard team." The tall Centaur guard captain was standing with the light behind him. His height of nearly three meters cast Bai Su firmly in shadow. He narrowed his deep eyes and looked Bai Su up and down suspiciously.
The young man in front of him was handsome, holding a strange plant in his hand, and looked nervous.
"Sir, as far as I know, this is not a registered crop."

The author has something to say:
The protagonist of the third unit of the machine took people to repair it, and did not delay the village’s harvest.
I've always thought that fantasy creatures like centaurs are both abstinent and sexy. Who on earth came up with this? What a genius!
