Chapter 148 Rashomon

Chapter 148 Rashomon

The whole afternoon was spent studying hard.

Samuel was pleasantly surprised to find that the principles of magic in this world were very similar to the chemistry in his original world.

And he happened to be a science student.

With the memories of his original body, Samuel easily understood the methods of making basic potions and learned how to enchant items.

It was almost dinner time when a servant came and knocked on the door to tell him that the guests had arrived.

——This guest is Cassius.

Samuel immediately wanted to leave, but as he reached the door, he suddenly thought of something. He then told the servant waiting at the door, "Bishop Cassius, please wait in the reception room. I will be there shortly."

"Yes." The servant left with his order.

Samuel immediately rushed into the bathroom and quickly tidied his face in the mirror, which looked a little tired after studying all afternoon.

Applying face cream, applying perfume, braiding hair...

After doing all this, he picked out a loose plain robe from the closet, and then put on lace gloves to cover up his appearance, making sure that his image was now weak and beautiful enough before going out.

He hoped that Bishop Cassius would tell him the truth because Samuel was his white moonlight, and help him gain a foothold in this man-eating mansion. At present, with so many eyes watching him, Samuel was temporarily unable to leave on his own.

He first went to the reception room to meet with Bishop Cassius, and was satisfied to see the surprise in Bishop Cassius' eyes.

Then, he took him to the small restaurant for dinner.

After all the dishes were served, Samuel dismissed all the servants, took off his hood, and revealed his beautiful face covered with dark lines in front of Bishop Cassius.

Then she stared at him, tears streaming down her face, and said, "Thank you, Cassius, for saving me. I really don't know how to thank you enough... I'd do anything for you."

Bishop Cassius paused in his steak-cutting motion and said noncommittally, "Even if it weren't for our past relationship, as the resident bishop of Golden Town, I would still save you."

As he said this, he stood up and exchanged the steak in front of him, which he had cut into small pieces, with the whole steak in front of Samuel, in a gentlemanly manner.

Samuel's breath hitched as he approached.

But he quickly adjusted the frequency without being discovered by Bishop Cassius.

To be honest, Samuel had no intention of deliberately seducing the clergyman, let alone flirting with him.

But looking at the current situation, Bishop Cassius is the only person who has the ability to help him and is unlikely to stab him in the back.

Samuel could only turn to him for help.

Samuel then gently picked up a piece of steak, put it in his mouth, and said hesitantly, "I don't remember much about what happened last night. I'm glad you came."

“Well, you don’t need to remember that kind of memory,” Bishop Cassius replied.

"But," Samuel took a deep breath and said with tears in his eyes, "but today, those relatives, they questioned me at lunch... You know, I don't want to recall those horrific scenes last night no matter what, but I can't explain it to others."

"Cassius, can you tell me what you saw last night?"

"I really need your help, please..."

The table was so close that Samuel could touch Bishop Cassius's fingers with his hand.

But he didn't. He just put his lace-gloved hand on the table and pinched the tablecloth, allowing Bishop Cassius to see the blue veins on the back of his hand that were bulging from forbearance, and the frightened and fragile expression on his face.

The image of a beautiful widow.

Bishop Cassius sighed, "Samuel, if you had been like you are now... then everything would have been different."

Samuel bit his lower lip lightly with his teeth and said nothing.

He still looked at Bishop Cassius dimly, insisting on waiting for him to surrender first - and he succeeded.

Bishop Cassius gently raised his right hand and waved it to create a silent array to prevent anyone around from eavesdropping.

Then, meeting Samuel's expectant gaze, he confessed, "I actually didn't see anything last night."

"What?" Samuel said in disbelief.

Bishop Cassius explained, "I really didn't see anything. Last night, after noticing something was amiss in the banquet hall, I followed the traces of magic to the entrance to the basement. However, it was a crystal door inlaid with gold, and even I couldn't open it. I could smell the stench of blood coming from inside, and I guessed something bad had happened, but at that time... I'm sorry, there was nothing I could do."

"After a while, when I was thinking about how to break the door violently, it suddenly opened. I hurried in and saw that everyone except you and Arnold was covered by the alchemy formation."

"You were in a very bad state at the time, covered in corpse qi—yes, not poison gas, but corpse qi. I had no choice but to temporarily seal off your life force, leaving you at the moment before death. I brought you and Arno out together—I didn't have time to check on the situation inside the refining formation."

"As soon as I brought you out, the basement door closed again. I had no choice but to take you to the empty room next door. I soon discovered that Arnold was also dead and his heart was missing."

Samuel was stunned. This was completely different from what he thought.

What this means is that Bishop Cassius doesn't know whether Mr. Hermann is dead or alive under the Alchemy Formation?

Could it be that Arnold's alchemy formation before his death was a sacrifice to help his father prolong his life?

Is Mr. Herman still alive?

Samuel asked him, "So even you don't know whether Mr. Herman is dead or alive?"

"Yes." Bishop Cassius nodded. "Not long after, the butler brought people here. I had no choice but to tell him that Hermann and the other magicians were still inside, and that you were exhausted from overusing magic. I didn't know why Arnold was like this. I told him that I saw you carrying Arnold's body out, and asked me not to tell anyone about it."

Samuel: “…”

Samuel simply didn't know what to say.

He felt that the world was just one huge city, full of melodrama and stand-ins.

Bishop Cassius suddenly winked at him playfully: "Instead, I want to ask you, what exactly happened before you fell into a coma?"

So Samuel told him everything he had seen before he fell unconscious.

He emphasized, "I don't know if the cause of death of the previous mistresses was the same as mine, but please believe me, I have no intention of aiding and abetting evil."

Samuel did not forget that Bishop Cassius was a clergyman, and one with particularly great authority.

He was afraid that if he did not stand firm, Bishop Cassius would kill him first.

Bishop Cassius nodded. "Well, the situation now is that we can only temporarily assume that Mr. Herman succeeded. After all, Arnold is dead."

"Well," Samuel asked, "how did you deal with the butler last night?"

"I asked him sternly why my good friend Mrs. Samuel disappeared from the wedding, looking as if she had been poisoned for a long time. Where was her husband, the governor of Golden Town? I also asked him what kind of hidden secrets could have caused my weak friend to come out holding the body of her stepson, Master Arnold, and begged me not to tell anyone."

"What did the butler say?"

"He also begged me not to tell anyone—he promised that he would take good care of you and explain the matter to me personally after you woke up today. He also assured me that everyone in the mansion was innocent and that Master Arnold's death was probably just an accident. He asked me to believe that Mr. Hermann was an excellent governor."

"ha!"

Samuel couldn't help but hold his forehead and smiled bitterly.

So in the end, no one knows the truth, but they mistakenly think that the other party knows the truth.

Several forces confronted each other like crickets fighting, and the result was that no one really understood everything.

I am speechless.

Samuel simply didn't know what expression to make.

At the same time, he felt that, somehow, the current situation was not too bad.

He could easily reach a consensus with Bishop Cassius, helping him investigate the criminal evidence of the people in the mansion while using Mr. Hermann's power to protect himself. When the time was right, he could take some money and leave here under the protection of Bishop Cassius to start a new life.

The premise is that he can stabilize the current situation.

Samuel was about to discuss this with Bishop Cassius, but Bishop Cassius spoke first: "Samuel, I trust you just as you trust me. The situation is very troublesome now. As long as the basement door cannot be opened, I will not be able to thoroughly investigate the mansion. I hope you can help me."

"Of course, of course I will help you," Samuel said emotionally. "What else can I do? I finally understand now that this is a house that eats people."

"Don't worry, it won't be long. I hope you can help me find out the truth, but the prerequisite is that you can protect your own safety. I suggest that you just tell others that Mr. Hermann is recuperating and let you manage the mansion on his behalf. This way you will be safer."

"We're really on the same page, and that's exactly what I did."

Samuel smiled softly.

He leaned close to Bishop Cassius's ear and whispered a few words to him, then raised his glass and clinked it with the man who was stunned by his words.

Amid the crisp sound of clinking cups, they reached an agreement.

After dinner, Samuel kept Bishop Cassius in the reception room to drink tea for a long time, and only let him go reluctantly when the moon was mid-rise.

When the two parted, he ignored the servants' looks, took the initiative to step forward, snuggled up to Bishop Cassius, and leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek.

That look was so affectionate.

Then he turned and told the housekeeper behind him: "I am going to the basement to check on Mr.'s body. Please don't follow me. Mr. said he doesn't want anyone to see him at this stage. He is too weak."

"But……"

"I will tell you about your husband's recent situation. Don't worry, I will share the prosperity of the Governor's Palace with him."

Perhaps it was the last sentence that dispelled the butler's doubts, and he agreed to let Samuel go to see Mr. Herman alone.

Under the vague surveillance, Samuel touched the crystal door of the basement, and then the magic circle flashed and he disappeared.

In order to make those people think that he had entered the basement, Samuel made some noises before teleporting.

But in fact, he sent himself to Arnold's room - the butler might go to his room to see if there was anyone there, but would never check the room of a dead person.

Samuel hummed a little tune and leisurely walked into the bathroom to wash his hands. There was a disposable magic circle on the palm of his hand that he had drawn in the afternoon, and it felt a little burning after using it.

Samuel had just finished washing and was planning to sleep here for the night, but was suddenly pressed hard against the tiles.

When Samuel saw the man's face clearly in the moonlight, he was so surprised that his eyes almost popped out of their sockets.
