Chapter 17 I Don't Want to Be Laughed At by You
Su Yueming is never short of people who like him.
This was the conclusion Wang Yan reached after silently observing him for two months.
All sorts of love letters would pile up in Su Yueming's desk drawer the next morning, and there were so many breakfasts that the desk was almost overflowing.
Wang Yan stood at the back door of Su Yueming's classroom, forcibly turning his gaze away from Su Yueming's seat.
Then he quickly left, reminding himself not to pay any more attention to Su Yueming on the way.
But the night betrayed him.
During the days when he tried to stop himself from paying attention to Su Yueming, he dreamed about Su Yueming almost every night.
He dreamt of the bullying that day, and of Su Yueming descending upon him like a savior.
The thank you I didn't say that day all came true in my dreams.
A feeling of happiness welled up inside me, and that happiness lingered even after Wang Yan woke up.
Wang Yan sat half-up on the bed; it was just beginning to get light.
He knew he had become one of Su Yueming's many secret admirers.
Compared to others, he hid his love for Su Yueming very deeply.
Since that day, Dai Song has stopped punching and kicking Wang Yan.
But the mockery continued unabated.
One day during self-study, they sat in the back row and started talking about the girls in their grade.
Everyone is interested in so-and-so, and so-and-so is the most beautiful.
I don't know what they were saying, but soon their foul laughter filled the classroom.
Dai Song then gave an exaggerated whistle and his gaze fell on Wang Yan.
The people around him were very perceptive; without a second thought, they immediately walked over to Wang Yan.
She tapped her fingers on Wang Yan's table, and Wang Yan looked up, puzzled.
Do you have someone you like?
Wang Yan remained silent.
"Do you have someone you secretly admire?" Ji Lin persisted.
Wang Yan remained silent.
"So, who do you think is the prettiest in our class?"
"Are you bored?" Wang Yan finally couldn't stand it anymore, and he frowned and asked impatiently.
Dai Song burst into laughter as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world. "Ji Lin, why are you asking him this? Does he dare to say who's the prettiest? Whoever gets his eye on is truly unlucky!"
"Besides, who would be so foolish as to fall for a poor scumbag?"
Dai Song's voice was sharp and piercing, hurting Wang Yan's eardrums.
Wang Yan gripped the pen tightly, but ultimately said nothing.
Perhaps Dai Song is right; no one will actually like Wang Yan.
The person who is liked by Wang Yan is truly unlucky, as they will become inferior because of Wang Yan's affection.
Wang Yan didn't want Su Yueming to be ridiculed by others because of his feelings for her.
So Wang Yan tried his best to pretend he didn't care, tried his best to act as if he couldn't see Su Yueming passing by, and tried his best to pretend he didn't know Su Yueming at all.
But occasionally, her affection would still slip out.
For example, Wang Yan wants to get into the same university as Su Yueming.
He didn't want to be separated from Su Yueming, and he didn't want to never see him again.
To make up for the gap in his grades, Wang Yan resigned from his part-time job.
He devoted himself entirely to his studies, and going to bed at dawn and waking up as soon as it got light became his routine.
However, his mock exam results dealt him a fatal blow; instead of improving, his grades dropped.
He dropped from 25th to 45th.
Su Yueming, however, set a new record, ranking second in his grade.
Wang Yan stood there in front of the list, his eyes stinging with tears.
"Damn, Yueming, you're second in the grade!"
Jiang Xiao's shocked voice came from behind.
Wang Yan subconsciously looked in the direction of the sound and saw Jiang Xiao and Su Yueming standing diagonally behind him.
Because the large notice was posted in the school's first-floor lobby, the abundant sunlight shone on the ground, making it shimmer and impossible to ignore.
Su Yueming seemed to notice Wang Yan's gaze and looked up at him.
After making eye contact for only a second, Wang Yan looked away.
He turned around and walked in the opposite direction.
Perhaps the distance between him and Su Yueming was as deep as a chasm, and even if he were to be shattered to pieces, he could not get any closer to him.
What are you looking at?
Jiang Xiao followed Su Yueming's gaze and only saw the back of a boy.
"nothing."
Su Yueming withdrew his gaze, his eyelashes trembling.
"With your grades, you can choose any university in City A," Jiang Xiao said with a beaming smile. "So, have you decided which school you want to apply to?"
Su Yueming's gaze slid down the list from his own name. "I don't know, I haven't decided yet."
"Indeed, we need to choose carefully."
Jiang Xiao started looking for her name on the list. When she found that her name was ranked fiftieth, she roared, "Damn it, how come I only got this low score?"
"Oh no, I can't go to the same university as you."
Jiang Xiao exaggeratedly clenched her fists tightly around her chest.
Therefore, it was foreseeable that on the day the college entrance examination scores were released, Wang Yan and Su Yueming's scores would differ by more than fifty points.
Wang Yan could not possibly get into any of the universities that Su Yueming chose.
But Wang Yan didn't have time to be sad, because he needed to work to save up for his university tuition and living expenses.
The whole village knew the day I received my acceptance letter.
It was also the first time that Wang Yan felt "love" at his uncle's house. The night before Wang Yan went to register for university, his uncle gave him 500 yuan.
Study hard.
This was his uncle's instruction to him.
Wang Yan clutched the money in his hand, feeling both like laughing and crying.
Laughter is what caring is all about; tears are why people are always so pragmatic.
On the day he left, Wang Yan silently put the 500 yuan back into his uncle's pocket.
Sitting on the train, Wang Yan stared blankly at the scenery rushing past the window.
Su Yueming's face flashed through my mind for no reason.
Wang Yan said softly, "Goodbye."
However, Wang Yan never expected that they would meet again so soon.
I got off the train and went straight to school.
While queuing to register, Wang Yan heard Su Yueming's voice again.
At first, Wang Yan thought it was a hallucination.
"Su Yueming".
Wang Yan suddenly turned around, the bright sun shining on his face. He squinted and saw Su Yueming standing not far from him.
He actually got into the same university as me!
This thought kept growing in Wang Yan's mind, and this huge surprise made Wang Yan feel dizzy.
But with Su Yueming's grades, he could have chosen a better school, so why did he come here?
Wang Yan's chest heaved repeatedly. Could it be...?
"Yueming, you really came to this school? I thought you were joking with me!" Jiang Xiao followed behind Su Yueming and asked, almost crying with emotion. "Tell me the truth, did you come to this school because of me? I'm so touched. It's been worth all these years of knowing each other..."
"Uh-huh."
Su Yueming was getting annoyed by Jiang Xiao, so he could only give a perfunctory answer.
Upon hearing this, Wang Yan silently walked away, his surging love once again suppressed.
