Chapter 23 Stepping Forward

Chapter 23 Stepping Forward

With no restraint on his wrist, Su Yueming immediately sensed something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Su Yueming asked a crucial question: Where did the handcuffs go?

In an instant, countless thoughts surged through his mind, the one that terrified him the most was that Wang Yan had abandoned him.

Su Yueming sat stiffly on the large bed, not even hearing the sound of the bedroom door being pushed open.

"You're awake."

This is Wang Yan's familiar voice.

Although he couldn't see Wang Yan, Su Yueming still turned his head to the side as if in slow motion in a movie.

"What's wrong?" Wang Yan noticed Su Yueming's unusual mood. "Aren't you happy that we unlocked your handcuffs?"

Why did you untie me?

As Su Yueming slowly uttered the question, his fear of being abandoned only intensified.

Wang Yan placed the breakfast he had prepared on the bedside table, saying, "It will be easier for you to do anything if you take off the handcuffs."

"That's all?"

Su Yueming was somewhat incredulous, his hands hanging at his sides clenching slightly.

Wang Yan sensed Su Yueming's unease and frowned slightly in confusion. "Yes."

Hearing Wang Yan's affirmative answer, Su Yueming breathed a slight sigh of relief.

"That scared me to death."

Su Yueming uttered those words softly, but they were quickly blown away by the wind.

So much so that Wang Yan didn't hear it at all.

How are you feeling?

He was drugged in the morning, and Wang Yan was worried that it would cause him discomfort.

"It's about the same as usual." Su Yueming really didn't notice anything unusual about his body.

Wang Yan nodded, feeling a little relieved.

He glanced at the clock; it was almost noon.

"Let's eat." Wang Yan paused. "I need to go to work later and won't be back until the afternoon."

What time in the afternoon?

Su Yueming pressed for details.

Four o'clock.

"Okay." Su Yueming nodded. The midday sun shone through the heavy curtains onto the bed, landing on Su Yueming's calves with a warm glow.

Su Yueming ate his own lunch today.

Watching him eat, Wang Yan couldn't help but feel that he had done the right thing. However, when Wang Yan's gaze fell on Su Yueming's face, he vaguely sensed the regret that Su Yueming was showing.

He couldn't help but wonder, was unlocking the handcuffs a bad thing for Su Yueming?

Su Yueming was indeed disappointed, because this meant Wang Yan could no longer feed him.

But Su Yueming quickly cheered up again. It was good to have the handcuffs removed, so that Wang Yan would have more time to eat.

After washing the dishes, it was 12:30.

Wang Yan should go to work now.

"I'm leaving."

Come back soon.

Su Yueming couldn't help but emphasize.

Wang Yan nodded, a warm feeling welling up inside him. Realizing that Su Yueming couldn't see him, he added, "Okay."

Wang Yan reluctantly left home and went to school.

Actually, he had considered quitting his job when he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, but why didn't he quit?

He found that staying at home every day only increased his loneliness, and his mind would take him back to the past, immersing him in this failed life.

When a person works continuously like a machine and then stops, their first thought is not to rest, but fear.

While Wang Yan was giving the lesson, Su Yueming fell asleep again in bed.

The drug still had some effect on him; when he woke up again, the sun had already set.

As the sun began to set, the room grew dim and the temperature gradually dropped. Su Yueming knew that Wang Yan would be off work soon, so he sat up and began to wait.

Wang Yan did indeed leave work.

He rode his electric scooter on the asphalt road. The wind was a bit strong today, making the tree branches rustle.

"Try calling the police if you dare."

A sharp voice came from around the corner, and Wang Yan subconsciously slowed down.

"Hand over the money now, or don't blame me for being rude."

The leader spoke with a fierce tone, as if he was about to commit violence against someone at any moment.

This has nothing to do with Wang Yan; he should have left.

After all, it's better to avoid trouble.

But just as he was about to leave, Su Yueming came to Wang Yan's mind.

He remembered the moment when Su Yueming stood up for him when he was being bullied.

So Wang Yan stopped the car and put the helmet in the basket.

Just as the slap was about to land on the face of the boy who was surrounded, Wang Yan shouted to stop him, "Stop!"

With just one sentence, Wang Yan instantly drew their attention and made them turn around.

It was at this moment that Wang Yan saw the boy trapped in the middle, thin and frail, just like himself in the past.

"Who do you think you are?" The blond-haired man leading the group sneered.

Wang Yan met his gaze and walked towards them with firm steps. "What I am is not important, but it is wrong for you to bully people."

As soon as Wang Yan finished speaking, he was met with a burst of laughter.

The blond-haired man laughed arrogantly, his gaze sweeping over Wang Yan from head to toe without any attempt to conceal his arrogance.

"Release them immediately, or don't blame me for being rude to you."

Wang Yan frowned slightly, a hint of hostility appearing in his eyes.

No sooner had he finished speaking than the blond-haired man raised his hand and shoved Wang Yan's shoulder hard. "I'd like to see how you're going to treat me rudely."

Since he wanted to be beaten, Wang Yan didn't hold back.

A punch landed squarely on the blond-haired man's face, and blood instantly flowed from the corner of his mouth.

"Holy crap..."

Huang Mao flew into a rage and, calling his friends, charged at Wang Yan.

The fierce fear the ruthless, and the ruthless fear the reckless.

Wang Yan, on the other hand, was the kind of person who didn't care about his life. He already had very little life left, so what was there to risk?

In the end, Wang Yan emerged victorious in the fight.

"Fine, you win."

Yellow Hair threw down those words viciously, then scattered like birds and beasts with his brothers.

Only then did Wang Yan have time to look at the bullied boy. He slowly walked towards the boy and asked, "Are you alright?"

The rosy sunset fell behind Wang Yan, brilliant and bright.

The boy stared blankly at Wang Yan, momentarily at a loss for what to do.

"I'm fine."

The boy took a step forward, and this time he finally saw Wang Yan's face clearly.

A gentle breeze lifted the hair on his forehead, revealing his high nose and brown eyes. At that moment, the sunset behind him seemed to lose its luster.

"Thank you for helping me."

The boy smiled, revealing dimples at the corners of his lips.

Wang Yan shook his head. This time, under Su Yueming's influence, he also became a "hero".

"Protect yourself and don't give them a chance to bully you."

After saying this, Wang Yan prepared to leave.

It was getting late, and he should go home.

But as soon as he took a step, Wang Yan's arm was grabbed. He turned around instinctively and saw the boy looking at him nervously. "Can you tell me your name?"

"Wang Yan".
