Chapter 88 Let them lock you up if you're courting death.

Chapter 88 Let them lock you up if you're courting death.

"I encountered someone who was injured on the road," Qin Yizhou said.

Qin Yizhou had a gun, but there were too many people, so he couldn't fire it. He fought with the assailants, which is how he got injured. Fortunately, the assailants didn't have a gun. You have to understand, guns weren't banned at that time; if the assailants had a gun, it would have been much more dangerous.

If Qin Yizhou hadn't shown up, that man would still be wielding a knife and attacking people. He was acting crazy; no one knew what had triggered it. Later, the police took the man away.

Qin Yizhou didn't go to the police station; instead, he went to get his wounds treated first. Besides Qin Yizhou, several other people had been slashed; Qin Yizhou's injuries were relatively minor, while the others were more serious.

"Be careful." Song Fenglan felt sorry for Qin Yizhou when she saw the injury on his arm.

"It's nothing, just a minor injury, it'll heal quickly," Qin Yizhou said. "Where's Zihang?"

“He said he was going to sleep with his brother and wouldn’t be coming back; he’d stay with Mom,” Song Fenglan said. “Let him stay there.”

"Alright," Qin Yizhou nodded. "Be careful when you go out these days."

"I just go to work, and then I stay at home, my mom's house." Song Fenglan didn't go anywhere. The research institute also told Song Fenglan not to wander around. She could go to places like parks, but she had to be with someone with her, just to prevent any accidents from happening to her.

"Yes, that's good," Qin Yizhou said. "It's still quite chaotic right now."

The authorities are cracking down on spies very strictly, and there are indeed quite a few spies among them. These spies are hidden among the people and are very difficult to detect.

"The person who caused the injury has been caught," Qin Yizhou said. "He seems to be acting strangely, like a madman."

“After living through that special era, quite a few people are indeed not in a good mental state,” Song Fenglan said. “It’s really hard to tell whether they are truly insane or just pretending.”

"Yes." Qin Yizhou agreed with Song Fenglan's words. Some people are just pretending to be crazy. "Just be more careful."

In the evening, Aunt Yu's family was pasting matchboxes together. Many boxes were laid out on the table, and Grandma Jiang was also pasting them. Grandma Jiang was quite old and had long since stopped working, but she still helped with some chores around the house to supplement the family income.

Brother Jiang and Father Jiang didn't put up the paperwork; they had to work during the day and only rested briefly in the evening. Sister-in-law Jiang sat down to put it up, but Second Sister-in-law Jiang didn't. Second Sister-in-law Jiang disliked how difficult it was to put up these things, fearing it would hurt her hands. Also, Second Sister-in-law Jiang believed that the money was taken by the eldest son's family, and she didn't want to help them.

Aunt Yu didn't ask Sister-in-law Jiang to come and put up the paperwork. If Sister-in-law Jiang had come, Aunt Yu would have given her a share of the money.

“At least we have some work to do at home. Some families have too many mouths, no work, little money, and a lot of conflicts,” Aunt Yu said. “We only got these jobs because of some connections.”

"We should do something, however much we can earn," said Grandma Jiang. "We can do something while sitting at home."

"Mom, you should go and rest if you get tired," Aunt Yu said.

"Let's start doing it," said Grandma Jiang. "It's not that hard yet."

"Yes." Aunt Yu nodded.

Grandma Jiang, wearing her reading glasses, stuck on as many stickers as she could.

"We've received another wedding invitation, and we still need to prepare red envelopes," Aunt Yu said. "There are so many weddings lately."

“Look at how much others give in red envelopes, look at how big their red envelopes are for our family,” said Grandma Jiang. “For long-term relationships, just add a little more money.”

"Let me see." Aunt Yu wrote them all down in a small notebook, so she could take it out and look at it anytime.

At this moment, Tian Kexian was crying at her parents' home. It turned out that her husband had gone out gambling and gambled away all the money she had saved for having a baby. Tian Kexian was pregnant, and that money was for when she planned to have the baby. Her husband had stolen her money, and by the time she found out, it was too late.

Tian Kexian originally thought her husband was just a little lazy and wouldn't treat her that well after marriage, but who knew that he would spend the money for having a baby directly.

"Mom, I really can't go on like this." Tian Kexian's eyes were red and swollen from crying. "I finally managed to save up some money and hid it away, and he just took it to gamble. I've told him so many times, don't gamble, don't gamble, but he just doesn't believe me. He thinks gambling is a quick way to make money. He thinks that if he loses, it's just bad luck, and his luck will definitely be better next time."

Men always try to justify themselves, and Tian Kexian naturally didn't believe them. It was useless; the man would steal her money again next time. No matter where Tian Kexian hid her money, her man could always find it and steal it.

"Don't cry, you're pregnant," said Tian's mother. "You both have children, how can you manage?"

"If you can say no, then no. Your sister was divorced once and remarried; look at the kind of man she married. If you divorced and remarried, would you be able to marry better than you are now? People will probably say that all the women in our Tian family like to get divorced."

"But……"

"A woman should follow her husband wherever he goes, whether he's a chicken or a dog," said Mother Tian. "If your son-in-law loves to gamble, then don't hide the money at home."

“If you don’t hide it at home, where else can you hide it? You can’t hide it like this, Mom. If I give you the money, I’m afraid I won’t be able to get it back.” Tian Kexian thought about how much money Ke Shu had given the Tian family over the years. When Tian Ke Shu needed money, did these people give her any? They would only say that all the money had been spent and that they had no money left.

Tian Kexian wasn't that foolish; she couldn't possibly give the family a lot of money like her sister did. That money was hers, not someone else's.

“You…” Mother Tian paused for a moment, “I didn’t ask you to hide the money here with me.”

It wasn't that Tian's mother didn't want the money from Tian Kexian, but given Tian Keshu's experience, it was clear that Tian Kexian would never give the money to her mother again.

“You are my own daughter, would I ever harm you?” said Mother Tian.

“If you don’t cause trouble, your daughter-in-law might not be so lucky,” Tian Kexian said. “Your precious grandchildren still need money for school, and there are expenses everywhere. If this money is diverted, it will be difficult to come up with later.”

"Do you have any money?" Tian's mother asked.

"No..." Tian Kexian felt guilty.

"Why are you talking about this if you don't have any money?" Tian's mother said. "Anyone who didn't know better would think you had a lot of money."

“I don’t have that much money right now, but I will in the future,” Tian Kexian said. “It’s just that my husband… how could he gamble?”

Tian Kexian felt heartbroken just thinking about it. So much money, all gambled away in one go. Tian Kexian felt like she couldn't breathe, as if a fishbone was stuck in her throat. Tian Kexian had lost count of how many times her husband had told her that his luck would definitely improve, but she had never seen her husband's luck actually improve. Her husband would finally win a little money, but then he would lose it all in the end, and even have to gamble away all the family's money.

"I wonder if he's borrowed money from anyone. If he's in debt, how will he pay it back?" Tian Kexian said. "The child is still so young..."

Tian Kexian really wanted to run away, but she couldn't bear to leave her child; she was pregnant. She couldn't ignore her child's future; without her as the mother, the child would suffer. Just as her mother had said, if her sister couldn't marry well, she would likely do the same, perhaps even marrying someone worse than her current partner.

“You know the child is still young, just bear with it,” said Mother Tian. “If it really doesn’t work, go over to where he’s gambling and sit at the table.”

“They can change locations,” Tian Kexian said. “They just won’t give up gambling. They have to gamble, they have to gamble. You can’t pull them back.”

Tian Kexian had said it countless times, but to no avail. When Tian Kexian went to her husband, he even said it was all because of her that they lost, and that women shouldn't go to places frequented by men. Tian Kexian found it laughable; when her husband stole her money, he didn't mind that the money had passed through a woman's hands, but now he looked down on her for it.

“Mom, if I had married Song Fenglan’s second brother back then, I would be living a very good life now,” Tian Kexian said.

Tian Keshu isn't here. If she were, the two of them would be arguing again.

"You should really think about your life now," Tian's mother sighed. "You have no destiny with the Song family."

“We were meant to be, but my older sister ruined it all,” Tian Kexian said. “How did I end up with her as my older sister?”

"..." Mother Tian didn't know how to put it. Before the accident, she thought her eldest daughter was quite good. After the accident, Mother Tian couldn't say it was the Tian family's fault; she could only say that Tian Keshu herself hadn't done a good job.

Tian Kexian is more than four months pregnant; she became pregnant before the Lunar New Year.

In the room, Song Fenglan looked at the white gauze on Qin Yizhou's arm. Even if she wasn't the one injured, she would feel a lot of pain.

"It's alright, no need to look," Qin Yizhou said. "I'll put on my clothes and then you won't be able to see it."

"Be careful," Song Fenglan said. "It's fine for me to take a look, but don't let Zihang see it, don't let him get scared."

"Yes, that's right." Qin Yizhou nodded.

The next day, Qin Zihang returned home. He didn't know his father was injured and told his father how much fun he had at the Song family's house.

“My brother has a lot of books to read,” Qin Zihang said. “I also need to read more books. My brother says his grades aren’t good enough and he needs to study more. I’m too embarrassed to tell him that my grades are actually pretty good, because I’m afraid it will discourage him.”

"Afraid he'll be hurt?" Qin Yizhou raised an eyebrow.

“Yes.” Qin Zihang nodded vigorously. “Mom said that we shouldn’t show off our grades in front of others. Not everyone’s grades are that good. My brother’s grades are a little worse, but he works very hard. I’m not as old as him yet, and I don’t know if I will be able to do well when I’m older.”

Qin Zihang had an in-depth discussion with his cousin about studying. He didn't care at all whether this topic would upset the other children; he only knew that studying was of paramount importance and that they must take it seriously. Only by achieving good grades could they become pillars of the nation in the future.

“My brother said he’s losing a lot of hair,” Qin Zihang said. “He’s been studying really, really hard, but… everyone is different.”

"Did your brother praise you?" Qin Yizhou asked.

"I felt a little embarrassed after praising you a few times," Qin Zihang said. "Brother, you should focus on your studies first. Your uncle is a teacher, so your grades will definitely be good."

"Who told you that?" Qin Yizhou asked.

"My mom said that teachers' children always do better in school," Qin Zihang said. "Teachers' children love learning more, and their parents also teach them. By the way, my mom is a teacher now, and she teaches others, so I love learning."

"..." Qin Yizhou understood; his son was praising himself and his mother indirectly.

"Dad, are you unhappy?" Qin Zihang asked.

"Happy, happy," Qin Yizhou said.

Qin Zihang sat next to his father and reached out to touch his arm, which happened to brush against Qin Yizhou's injured arm. Qin Yizhou had a high pain tolerance and didn't show any pain, but Qin Zihang could still feel it.

"Dad, what's wrong with your hand? It feels hard here." Qin Zihang asked.

"It's nothing, just a minor injury." Qin Yizhou didn't intend for Qin Zihang to see it, but he only mentioned it because his son asked.

"Does it hurt a lot?" Qin Zihang asked quickly. "When did you get hurt? Does Mom know? Mom will be sad."

"It doesn't hurt much," Qin Yizhou said.

"Then let's not let Mom know," Qin Zihang said. "Mom, she..."

"I already know." Qin Yizhou thought his son would care more about him, but he didn't expect his son to care about his mother.

“Dad, you’re not manly at all,” Qin Zihang said. “When we men get hurt, we can’t always make women feel sorry for us. Mom is very busy and works very hard. If you do this, Mom will be so sad that she won’t be able to sleep.”

“Your mother fell asleep last night,” Qin Yizhou said.

"Mom just closed her eyes, she's not asleep. She just didn't want you to worry," Qin Zihang said urgently. "Dad, why are you acting like a little child?"

"..." Qin Yizhou's lips twitched slightly.

"Mom will be so worried when she finds out," Qin Zihang said. "Dad, let me see, how is it? Is it wrapped up properly?"

Qin Zihang wasn't indifferent to his father; he just cared more about his mother.

"If I had known, I would have come back last night," Qin Zihang said. "Dad, next time please tell me first, don't tell Mom so quickly."

"Okay, I'll tell you next time," Qin Yizhou said.

The weather wasn't particularly cold, so Qin Yizhou wasn't wearing thick clothes, which is why Qin Zihang noticed.

Qin Yizhou rolled up his sleeve to let Qin Zihang see it. He thought that since Qin Zihang was a boy, and his son had said so, the child should see it. As for his wife's suggestion not to let the child see it, Qin Yizhou realized it wasn't her own idea, but rather Qin Zihang's desire to know.

When Song Fenglan returned home, Qin Zihang was looking at Qin Yizhou's arm.

"That's gauze, it's been sterilized, don't keep touching it with your hands." Song Fenglan glared at Qin Yizhou, why was Qin Yizhou letting the child see it?

“Zihang is all grown up now; he’s a boy,” Qin Yizhou said.

"Yes, I'm a man." Qin Zihang hurriedly tried to pull down Qin Yizhou's sleeve so his mother wouldn't see.

Qin Yizhou frowned slightly when he saw Qin Zihang's movements. "Don't move, I'll do it myself."

The son's movements were rough and forceful, and Qin Yizhou's wound was pressed down by his son several times.

"Oh." Qin Zihang pouted.

"Let me do it," Song Fenglan said, gesturing for Qin Yizhou to extend his hand.

"Mom, aren't you scared?" Qin Zihang asked.

“Yes, it’s scary,” Song Fenglan said. “That’s why you should tell your father not to do that again next time.”

"I'll be more careful next time and try not to get hurt," Qin Yizhou said. If he were to encounter a similar situation again, he would still step forward and would never refuse to help ordinary people.

"Mom." Qin Zihang wanted to cover his mother's eyes, but his mother saw his father's injury. His mother even helped his father pull down his sleeve. He should have let his father go to the corner so that his mother wouldn't see it so easily. "Dad, next time, don't get hurt. Be well."

"Okay, okay," Qin Yizhou replied.

At the end of April, before Tian Kexian gave birth, she got into a fight with her husband. He pushed her, and she lost her baby. While Tian Kexian was recovering from her miscarriage, her husband went gambling.

Tian Kexian wanted to go home for her postpartum confinement period, but her family wouldn't let her come back, saying that women in their postpartum period shouldn't return home because they would bring bad luck from outside. This drove Tian Kexian crazy. During her confinement period, she argued with her husband, and he left without closing the door properly, letting the wind blow in.

You should know that Tian Kexian miscarried a boy. She was heartbroken for the child, but there was nothing she could do. She was devastated by the loss of her baby.

Tian Keshu bought wontons to visit Tian Kexian, but Tian Kexian immediately knocked the wontons out of Tian Keshu's hand, and the wontons fell to the ground.

"What are you doing?" Tian Keshu asked.

"What am I doing? It's all because of you that I'm living such a miserable life," Tian Kexian said.

"Did I ask you to marry my brother-in-law?" Tian Keshu asked. "You wanted to get married yourself, and you were pregnant before marriage. How can you say that?"

"That's because I can't marry the person I love, that's why..."

"Like? Are you sure you like Song Fenglan's second brother? You're just after his money!" Tian Keshu gritted her teeth. "If he doesn't want you, he doesn't want you."

"I……"

“Look at Song Fenglan’s second brother’s wife. She used to be a soldier, a female soldier,” Tian Keshu said. “Her family background is good, unlike us, who come from families of spies. Don’t always think about her. If you want to blame someone, blame your uncle, not me. If you don’t want to eat, then don’t eat.”

Tian Keshu was angry and came to see Tian Kexian herself, only to find that this was how Tian Kexian treated her.

"If it weren't for you..."

"Shut up!" Tian Keshu said. "I shouldn't have come to see you!"

Tian Keshu turned and left. No matter what she said to her younger sister, it was useless; her sister only knew the Song family was rich. That money belonged to someone else; it couldn't possibly become theirs. If that money were theirs, the Tian family would have already taken it.

Tian Kexian looked at the wontons on the ground, still seething with anger. When she saw how happy Song Erge's wife was, she felt that her happiness had been ruined by her sister.

Since her so-called uncle wasn't around, it was no use for Tian Kexian to blame him.

That day, just as Song Fenglan got out of the car and was about to enter her home, Jiang Yufei arrived.

"Fenglan." Jiang Yufei held a basket of fruit, having waited specifically for Song Fenglan. Jiang Yufei wanted to have a good talk with Song Fenglan; the more she stayed at home, the more uneasy she felt, and she knew that every moment was a good time to say those things.

"Is something the matter?" Song Fenglan asked.

"It's nothing, it's nothing, I don't need your help," Jiang Yufei said. "I just wanted to talk to you."

“What is there for us to talk about?” Song Fenglan asked. “Just because you say it, does that mean I have to listen?”

"No, it's not that. I just wanted to talk to you," Jiang Yufei said. "I... I apologize to you. I was wrong before, and I have deeply realized my problems. Do you know Tian Keshu's sister? She's the sister-in-law of the Qin family, the sister of the one mentioned earlier."

"What's wrong with her?" Song Fenglan asked, puzzled. The matter of the Tian Keshu sisters should have nothing to do with her.

“Tian Kexian miscarried, and it was a fully formed male fetus,” Jiang Yufei said. “This is retribution.”

"She has never offended me." Song Fenglan was clear that it was Tian Keshu who had offended her. Whether Tian Keshu's sister had a miscarriage or not had nothing to do with Song Fenglan.

Song Fenglan entered the house, but she didn't let Jiang Yufei in. Jiang Yufei had thought that people like to hear gossip, and that if she talked to Song Fenglan about it, Song Fenglan might let her in. But Song Fenglan still wouldn't let her in.

Jiang Yufei wasn't unhappy. It was all because she had offended Song Fenglan so much in the past, and now there was no way she would let her in.

When Jiang Yufei's husband, Lu Ping, saw her return with fruit, he asked, "Are you giving this fruit away?"

“It was originally meant for my cousin Song Fenglan, but she didn’t want it,” Jiang Yufei said. “I went to her, but she still wouldn’t let me into her house.”

"Why are you going to see her again?" Lu Ping asked, puzzled. "Didn't you say she couldn't help you?"

“I didn’t expect her to help me, at least not now,” Jiang Yufei said. “I’m just thinking that she’s already back in the capital, and we can’t stay like this forever. Someone has to take the first step. Song Fenglan can’t take that step, so it has to be me.”

"Did you take that first step successfully?" Lu Ping asked.

"We didn't succeed this time, but maybe we'll succeed next time," Jiang Yufei said.

“You shouldn’t have offended her in the first place,” Lu Ping said. “Now, do you regret it when you think about your first love?”

"..." Jiang Yufei was unhappy. Why was her man talking about her first love? "I was blind. Weren't we young back then? Who hasn't been blind when they were young?"

Back then, Jiang Yufei was truly in love with her first love. She blamed everything on Song Fenglan, believing that if Song Fenglan hadn't lived in her house, she could have married her first love.

That evening, Song Fenglan and Qin Yizhou were in the room. Song Fenglan went to check on Qin Zihang next door to make sure he was asleep before returning to her own room.

“Jiang Yufei came over today. She was talking about the Tian family,” Song Fenglan said. “It’s about your older brother’s ex-wife’s family.”

"The Tian family's affairs?" Qin Yizhou asked, puzzled. "What does that have to do with us?"

“Jiang Yufei thought I hated the Tian family, that’s why she told me this,” Song Fenglan said. “Tian Keshu’s sister miscarried, and it was a boy. What’s there to talk about? It’s inappropriate for us to gloat over someone’s miscarriage. It was a life.”

“She wants to make up with you,” Qin Yizhou said.

“Yes, I don’t want to make up with her at all,” Song Fenglan said. “I’ve never liked her a long time ago. Jiang Yufei doesn’t like me either; she always looks at me with displeasure. Over the years, she’s wronged me countless times. Just because she apologizes, I have to forgive her? No way!”

Even if Song Fenglan didn't have time to be angry with Jiang Yufei, she still couldn't accept Jiang Yufei.

Fei's apology.

"If you don't want to forgive her, then don't," Qin Yizhou said. "Didn't she also go to my parents' house on the second day of the Lunar New Year?"

“Your parents were just giving face to your aunt. Didn’t you see? Your parents didn’t give Jiang Yufei’s child a red envelope. Everyone else’s children got one, but hers didn’t,” Song Fenglan said. “Such a young child just watched others receive red envelopes. If it were me, I wouldn’t have brought my child. But Jiang Yufei acted like nothing happened; she still took her child to her parents’ place.”

Song Fenglan didn't quite understand Jiang Yufei's thoughts. Jiang Yufei wasn't afraid of embarrassing her child, so no one else would care whether Jiang Yufei's child was embarrassed or not.

“Back then, she was very much in love with her first love,” Song Fenglan said. “She almost moved out for him. But it didn’t work out because her first love didn’t want her anymore.”

He talks about deep love, but when faced with a little trouble, he backs down and quickly finds another woman to be his wife.

"First love is always unforgettable," Song Fenglan said.

"You are my first love!" Qin Yizhou said.

"Don't you consider yourself my first love?" Song Fenglan glanced at Qin Yizhou. They didn't fall in love before getting married; something happened first, so it was a case of love after marriage. "Not everyone is so responsible. Marriage involves two families, and everyone considers many things. It's impossible to just look at whether you like someone or not."

At the time, Song Fenglan knew perfectly well that Jiang Yufei deeply loved her first love, yet she had no intention of leaving the Jiang family. Given the prevailing circumstances, Song Fenglan had to cling tightly to the Jiang family; she had to stay. Song Fenglan thought that if Jiang Yufei's first love truly loved her, they could still get married. But they didn't; the man didn't even try very hard.

“I admit I was a little selfish back then, and I didn’t dare to leave the Jiang family,” Song Fenglan said. “After all, I did ruin her marriage, so… my parents let her in, but they didn’t give her anything else.”

Regardless of whether Jiang Yufei's first love was good or bad, Song Fenglan did indeed cause her to not be with him. Jiang Yufei repeatedly tormented Song Fenglan, and Song Fenglan tolerated it all, partly because of Song Fenglan's background, and partly because Jiang Yufei didn't marry her first love.

Some things should be acknowledged; don't hide them.

“I did take advantage of them back then. That kind of environment can’t be measured in money,” Song Fenglan said. “Our family doesn’t always say that we gave them money. Giving them money also means they have to take risks.”

"Your heart is too soft," Qin Yizhou said. Song Fenglan didn't forgive Jiang Yufei, but she didn't resent her either. Qin Yizhou felt sorry for his wife. She always thought things through so clearly. When someone thinks so clearly and understands things so well, it often means that they have suffered a lot of hurt.

"Put yourself in my shoes," Song Fenglan said. "Your parents didn't want you to marry me, but you still did. I've never considered myself the culprit who ruined Jiang Yufei's marriage with her first love. If you could endure it, why couldn't Jiang Yufei's first love? You also bear the pressure, not him. He could have simply married Jiang Yufei and made her visit her parents' home less often, but he didn't."

Song Fenglan doesn't like to look for reasons within herself; that kind of internal conflict only makes her sad.

"So you can still be a little tolerant of her, and stand under the same roof as her," Qin Yizhou said.

“Hmm.” Song Fenglan nodded. “Not forgiving is one thing, but whether we live under the same roof or not is another. She’s not in our house, so it’s basically just a matter of one meal. Why make everyone unhappy? You saw it too, when we were eating together, Jiang Yufei didn’t dare to come close to me.”

"Indeed." Qin Yizhou recalled carefully that Jiang Yufei rarely approached Song Fenglan.

“That’s because she knows our family has become powerful again,” Song Fenglan said. “If our family wasn’t doing well, she wouldn’t have this attitude at all. You have to be strong and capable for others to respect you. By the way, we need to prepare for Zihang’s birthday party; he needs to invite his friends over.”

Song Fenglan hadn't forgotten her son's birthday party; she specially ordered a large cake and some smaller ones. Song Fenglan had originally planned to bake them herself, but fearing something might come up and she wouldn't be able to, she simply ordered them from a bakery. Besides the cakes, she also needed to prepare a lot of dishes, which Sun Mei might not be able to manage alone, so Song Fenglan asked her second brother to help her find two skilled chefs.

Even if the guests are all children, Song Fenglan has to make sure they eat well and doesn't skimp on the food. She can't let the children feel that they are eating poorly, otherwise, when they go home and tell their parents, their parents will think that Song Fenglan and her husband are stingy.

Song Fenglan wasn't that stingy; she prepared everything that needed to be prepared, and even did some simple decorating of the house.

"Is your hand fully healed?" Song Fenglan asked again.

"Look, it's all healed now. There's just a scar over there, but it will fade after a while," Qin Yizhou said.

While Song Fenglan and her husband were happily preparing for their child's birthday party, Li Hui and Guo Peng started arguing again.

The reason is simple: Guo Peng was supposed to work overtime, but he didn't go; instead, he went home. Then, coincidentally, the door wasn't locked from the inside. After Guo Peng went in, he saw Li Hui kissing the man who was playing the flute.

Guo Peng's face immediately darkened. It was already quite good that he managed to control himself and not kill the two despicable people.

Li Hui always said that Guo Peng had other women, but in reality, she herself had another man. Li Hui was frightened by Guo Peng's angry expression, and Guo Peng angrily said he wanted a divorce.

Then, Li Hui took sleeping pills and tried to commit suicide, but fortunately she was discovered in time and was sent for gastric lavage, which saved her life.

Guo Peng sat on a hospital bench, not quite understanding how things had come to this. Most of the money Guo Peng earned went to Li Hui. Li Hui couldn't have children, and Guo Peng hadn't divorced her, yet Li Hui brought other men home.

"How is she?" Guo's mother rushed to the hospital.

"It's alright, she's still alive." Guo Peng said with a heavy heart.

Guo Peng didn't know whether to say Li Hui was better off alive or dead. They argued, and he said he wanted a divorce. Li Hui said she wanted to die, and she actually tried to kill herself.

That was a living, breathing life!

Guo Peng couldn't let others think he didn't respect life; he didn't really intend for Li Hui to die.

"What do you plan to do next?" Guo's mother asked.

Guo's mother thought Li Hui was too audacious. How could Li Hui bring a stranger home? Just because Li Hui knew Guo Peng was going to work, did she let a stranger come to her house for excitement? It was clearly Li Hui's fault, yet she had the nerve to do this.

"This marriage can't be dissolved." Guo Peng couldn't just stand by and watch Li Hui die.

"Have you told her family?" Guo's mother asked. "With something this serious happening, we still need to talk to her family."

"Okay, I'll go make the call," Guo Peng said in a muffled voice.

Guo Peng, a grown man, couldn't possibly be indifferent to witnessing his wife with another man. But Li Hui had pulled this stunt on him, and Guo Peng was afraid that if she brought up divorce again and Li Hui really died, things would become very difficult.

Perhaps he shouldn't have married Li Hui in the first place. If he hadn't married Li Hui, none of these things would have happened.

Then he can have his own child, and his life won't be a mess.

Everyone in the family compound knew about Li Hui's situation, and they were all deeply saddened.

“I told you long ago, she and that man have a problem, but you wouldn’t believe me.”

"They said they would dance and sing together, and there were so many people around. If they dared to get so close in front of so many people, imagine how close they would be in private."

"She made a mistake herself, yet she still had the nerve to threaten suicide."

...

Everyone in the family compound thought there was something wrong with Li Hui. They thought she couldn't have children, and if it were any other man, he would have divorced her long ago. Yet Guo Peng still gave Li Hui most of his salary, and she still dared to go looking for other men.

Guo Peng contacted the Li family, who, upon learning that Li Hui was alright, had no intention of coming to Nancheng.

“If you still want her, then don’t get a divorce and continue living together,” Li’s mother said. “You’ve been husband and wife for many years, and she even had an abortion for you. She just made a mistake once, and she won’t do it again.”

"Mom, aren't you coming?" Guo Peng asked.

“We can’t go,” said Li’s mother. “With you here, your mother here, and your younger sister and brother here, there are so many of you who can take good care of one person. We have things to do here and can’t go over.”

Li's mother had no intention of going to Nancheng. What would she do there? If the Guo family made her bring Li Hui back, that would be terrible. There wasn't a room for Li Hui in the house anymore. If Li Hui came back, what would happen to the child she had taken in to raise?

There are many problems here, and Li's mother believes that the best option is for them not to go to Nancheng. As long as they don't go, the Guo family can't force them to persuade Li Hui to get a divorce.

“My daughter married you, and now that this has happened to her, you have to take responsibility,” Li’s mother said. “Don’t just focus on work all day; you need to take care of the family a bit. If you satisfy her, she naturally won’t go looking for other men. You two are husband and wife; you should discuss things together and not cause any more trouble like this.”

"..." Guo Peng understood everything Li's mother said. The Li family wanted to be hands-off managers, so Guo Peng had to marry and manage Li Hui.

Guo Peng just wanted the Li family to come and see Li Hui, but none of them were willing.

Guo Peng went to Fan Yani's house to find his mother and told her about the Li family's attitude.

“They’re afraid you’ll insist on getting a divorce,” Guo’s mother said. “If they were here, they would have to keep Li Hui in check. If they’re not here and something happens to Li Hui, they’ll come after you.”

With red eyes, Guo Peng punched the wall.

“Since you’ve decided not to get a divorce, you should talk to Li Hui properly,” Guo’s mother said. After what happened, Guo’s mother was also afraid that Li Hui would continue to cause trouble. “As long as she doesn’t make the same mistake again, that’s fine.”

"I..." Guo Peng couldn't swallow this insult, but he had to.

Li Hui was too demanding; Guo Peng was no match for her at all.

"You haven't eaten yet, have you? Eat something first," said Guo's mother. "Eat something, then go see Li Hui. When you get there, talk to her properly."

Guo's mother sighed. Her eldest son had married such a thing, and now this thing was clinging to their family and they couldn't get rid of it.

"Mom," Guo Peng said, his voice choked with emotion.

"Eat something first," Guo's mother said, repeating the same thing.

Since such a big thing happened between Li Hui and Guo Peng, Fatty Sister-in-law called Song Fenglan that night. Song Fenglan happened to be home and listened to the call.

"You wouldn't believe it, Li Hui was caught red-handed, and that man ran away as soon as he pulled up his pants," the fat woman said. "Li Hui attempted suicide by overdosing on pills and is still in the hospital. She even tried to break you up with your man; I don't think she's a very faithful person. Her man was already very good to her, and she still went looking for other men. After this incident, her man lost all face. Even though she's made such a scene, Guo Peng still doesn't dare to divorce her, and I heard her family refuses to come."

“Then they can’t get a divorce,” Song Fenglan sighed.

"Yes, we can't leave." Fatty rarely called Song Fenglan, but she had to talk about Li Hui. What Li Hui and Shi Guilan did back then was disgusting.

"I wish them well," Song Fenglan said. "Let's lock them up."

If this couple isn't together, who is? Someone like Li Hui can just keep ruining Guo Peng's life, and Guo Peng is willing to spoil her.

"That's exactly right," said the plump woman. "I just wanted to tell you this one thing. You go ahead and get busy; I should head back too."

“Okay.” Song Fenglan nodded.

The plump woman was making the call outside, not at home, so it wasn't appropriate for her to say much. Song Fenglan understood that the plump woman wasn't unwilling to talk; she was asking for money on the phone. It was already quite kind of her to call and tell Song Fenglan about this one thing.

After returning to the capital, Song Fenglan rarely thought about the people and events in the southern city.

"Mom, did you just hang up like that? What about Brother Xiaohu?" Qin Zihang hadn't forgotten Zhang Xiaohu. "Doesn't he want to talk to me?"

“Your brother Xiaohu’s mother makes phone calls outside, unlike us who have a telephone at home. She doesn’t have Xiaohu with her, so Xiaohu can’t talk to you,” Song Fenglan said.

"If Brother Xiaohu were here, I could have him come to my birthday party," Qin Zihang said regretfully. "I never had such a big birthday party back in Nancheng."

"It's our fault for not handling it for you."

"A birthday party?" Song Fenglan asked.

"No, no," Qin Zihang quickly shook his head. "I just miss Brother Xiaohu."

When Fatty Sister returned home, she saw Zhang Xiaohu studying diligently. Ever since Qin Zihang returned to the capital, Zhang Xiaohu had been working hard without anyone telling him to. It seemed that he really wanted to go to the capital to find Qin Zihang. She wondered how long this drive would last.

On the hospital rooftop, nurses and others were trying to persuade Li Hui, but Li Hui ran up to the rooftop when they weren't paying attention.

"My husband wants to divorce me, I don't want to live anymore!" Li Hui said, but she didn't actually jump.
