Chapter 1 So-called Marriage

Inside the largest wedding hall in L City.

As the solemn and romantic wedding march played softly, the bride, dressed in a long-train white gown, walked into the hall with her father's help.

The bride's face was covered by a thin lace veil, and her beautiful face could be vaguely seen under the veil.

The white strapless design perfectly accentuated the bride's curvaceous figure. It is said that a woman is most beautiful when she wears a wedding dress, and at this moment, she is an absolute beauty.

Four adorable flower girls, carrying flower baskets, busily scattered flowers behind the bride, and the atmosphere began to liven up.

In the very center of the solemn and sacred hall, the priest and the groom had been waiting for a long time.

Bai Xiaoruo slightly raised her eyes and, through the veil in front of her, saw the man she was about to walk towards.

He stood tall and straight, his pure black handmade suit impeccably tailored. The expression on his face was obscured, but it was definitely not a happy smile.

The bride's father led her to the groom, stopped, and finally placed his beloved daughter's hand in the groom's hand. He then patted the back of her hand twice with heartfelt words, his eyes suddenly reddening.

Bai Minglei sighed and looked at his prospective son-in-law: "Mingyu, from today onwards, my daughter Xiaoruo is in your care. I hope you can treat her well, cherish her, and be genuinely good to her."

Such a deep father-daughter bond is truly heartbreaking to watch.

Bai Xiaoruo, however, was already numb, and there was no trace of emotion or sadness in her eyes.

If her father truly cared for her well-being, why would he hastily marry her off to a complete stranger for the sake of her sister and so-called family interests?

Over the years, even on the day my mother passed away, my father's eyes never reddened. But today, he's once again playing the role of a loving father, reluctant to part with his mother.

It's incredibly ironic, really.

If today's bride were the older sister, the father would surely be crying his eyes out even more.

Xian Mingyu glanced at the small, white hand that Bai Minglei had just offered to him, but the affectionate word "Dad" stuck in his throat, and he couldn't bring himself to say it.

Although from today onwards, Bai Minglei officially becomes his father-in-law, and he has an even more complicated relationship with the Bai family.

But this marriage, and this bride, were never what he wanted.

If he doesn't love her, how can he be sincere?

But given the current situation, all we can do is verbally agree for now.

The days ahead are long.

Even if you don't like it, you can't hold a grudge.

"Don't worry, I will definitely..."

What did Bai Minglei just say her name was again? Xiao Bai? Or Xiao Xiao?

The words that were on the tip of Xian Mingyu's tongue suddenly came out.

His mind wasn't on that at all, and he never even thought about remembering her name.

"I will definitely take good care of her. She is the only one I will love in this life."

Bai Xiaoruo's heart trembled for a moment, and she stared blankly at the man in front of her.

Does this count as a confession?

No, no, this isn't how you confess your feelings.

Bai Xiaoruo secretly mocked herself: Idiot, what are you thinking? This is your wedding, not your dating scene.

Perhaps it's because no one has ever said such sweet words to me before; hearing even a little bit of nice talk makes me feel dizzy.

After hearing Xian Mingyu's answer, Bai Hui nodded in satisfaction and turned back to the audience seats below.

With Xuan Mingyu holding Bai Xiaoruo's hand, facing the priest, the wedding officially began.

The priest solemnly recited the vows in his hands—

"...Mr. Xian Mingyu, whether in poverty, sickness, hardship, pain, wealth, health, happiness, or bliss, are you willing to stay by Miss Bai Xiaoruo's side and love her for the rest of your life?"

"I do."

A clear, cool, and unpretentious male magnetic voice.

The priest turned to look at the bride beside him—

"...Miss Bai Xiaoruo, whether in poverty, sickness, pain, wealth, health, joy, or happiness, are you willing to stay by Mr. Xian Mingyu's side and love him for the rest of your life?"

One second, two seconds...

The bride, veiled in white, hesitated at this moment.

The audience members began to whisper among themselves, wondering why the bride was so hesitant.

The groom remained expressionless throughout.

He didn't care whether she was willing or not.

She never consulted him about who she married.

The bride's expression was obscured; her breathing was shallow, and she clutched her bouquet tightly in her hands.

"Miss Bai Xiaoruo?" the priest asked patiently again.

"Ah, yes... I... I'm willing."

Bai Xiaoruo lowered her head in annoyance as her wandering thoughts were brought back.

How embarrassing! She actually spaced out in that situation.

The priest cleared his throat and continued, "Now, in the name of God, I declare you husband and wife. You may now exchange rings, and the groom may now passionately kiss his beautiful bride."

Two flower girls held the rings that the bride and groom were about to exchange; the custom-made platinum diamond rings lay quietly in a velvet box.

Xuan Mingyu first took the woman's ring from the flower girl's hand, and then slowly took Bai Xiaoruo's hand.

When her father handed her hand to him earlier, he hadn't had a chance to hold it properly. Now he realized that her hand was very soft and small, not the kind of delicate hand with well-defined bones. Even with lace gloves on, it still felt so soft that he couldn't help but want to take good care of it.

He lowered his eyes and slowly slipped the ring into her ring finger.

Bai Xiaoruo also took the men's ring from the velvet box in the hands of another flower girl, and, imitating Xian Mingyu's earlier action, carefully grasped his cold, broad hand—

This was the first time in her life that she had taken the initiative to hold a boy's hand. Her heart skipped a beat with nervousness, and she accidentally slipped the ring onto his middle finger.

Xuanmingyu glanced at the ring on his middle finger and frowned slightly.

"You wore it wrong."

The next second, he "kindly" reminded her in a voice that only the two of them could hear.

"Ah...yes, I'm sorry."

His words reminded Bai Xiaoruo that she had put the ring on the wrong finger for him. She quickly took off the ring she had just put on his middle finger and put it on his ring finger instead.

She didn't put it on him incorrectly on purpose.

It's inevitable to be nervous about your first wedding.

Besides, this man in front of them... they've only met twice.

This wedding was the first time we'd had such a significant exchange.
