Chapter 269 The Situation Escalates

Bai Xiaoruo got up very early today.

Although it's Lunar New Year's Eve, no fireworks are set off in the United States.

She felt uneasy, her mind filled with thoughts of her grandfather, as if something had happened.

She suddenly opened her eyes and sat up in bed; Xuan Mingyu was still asleep beside her.

She looked out the window; it was dawn. The IV needle in her hand had been removed the night before.

She threw back the covers, got out of bed, walked to the sofa, and took Xian Mingyu's phone from his coat pocket. He had told her the password before; it was his birthday.

After unlocking the door, she walked to the French windows, intending to call her grandfather.

She had left the phone number of the nursing home before, and sometimes when she missed her grandfather but didn't have time to visit him, Bai Xiaoruo would call that number.

Fortunately, she still remembered the number.

I dialed again and again, but I couldn't get through no matter how many times I tried.

What happened?

Bai Xiaoruo looked at the number dialed on her phone. Yes, it was the number of the nursing home.

In the past, my calls would always connect quickly, but why today...?

Could it be that something happened to my grandfather?

"I just told you to get up early yesterday, why are you being so obedient today?" A man's coat was draped over her shoulders. Bai Xiaoru was startled and turned around. Xuan Mingyu had already woken up a step behind her.

He noticed it the moment she got out of bed.

Seeing that she was standing in front of the French windows making a phone call without wearing an extra layer of clothing, I was afraid she would catch a cold.

"Sorry, did I wake you up?" Bai Xiaoruo pressed the button on the still unreachable phone and handed it back to him.

She didn't mean to take his phone to make a call; she just hadn't brought her phone with her when she was hospitalized.

"No. What's wrong? Who are you calling?"

“I…I called the nursing home several times, but I couldn’t get through. I’m very worried. Could something have happened to my grandfather?”

"Your maternal grandfather?"

The caregivers for Feng Zhiyuan's courtyard were changed to members of the Xian family a long time ago, so the old man should be fine.

She was overthinking it.

"It's probably too early; no one at the nursing home is up yet. I'll call back later to ask."

"Really?"

"Okay. Now that you're awake, get dressed. Breakfast should be ready by now. Let's go back and eat."

"good."

Hopefully, she's just overthinking things, and that Grandpa is alright.

***

Back home, in the yard, the servants were busy running around. Some were setting up ladders to hang little red lanterns on the branches of the trees; others were busy pruning the flowers and plants in the yard and giving it a fresh makeover.

Seeing Xian Mingyu helping Bai Xiaoruo back, Jian Yuemei, who had just stepped out the door, quickly went forward to support her, "Xiaoruo, are you feeling better? Is there anything else that's bothering you?"

"Auntie, I'm fine, it's just that I have some indigestion. Thank you for your concern."

"This..." Bai Xiaoruo didn't have any indigestion at all. Jian Yuemei glanced at Xuan Mingyu next to Bai Xiaoruo. This was probably just Xuan Mingyu trying to comfort her and not let her worry too much. "Yes, it's just indigestion. It's alright. Come, come, come in and eat something. The kitchen just made some millet porridge, it's still warm. It's best if you eat something light now."

"Um."

......

Xuan Mingyu fed Bai Xiaoruo some millet porridge and some vegetables, and she felt tired and wanted to sleep.

After comforting her and getting her to bed, Xuan Mingyu went to the balcony to call Gu Yao and ask him about the nursing home.

[Mingyu, I advise you to stay in the US for a while longer this year. A lot of big things are happening in L City right now, so it's best if you don't come back yet.]

"What happened?"

[The fact that you and your sister-in-law were secretly married has been exposed by someone. Even the photos of you accompanying her to the hospital for a check-up have been posted online. Your sister-in-law is now a celebrity on the news headlines. Not only that, but her background has also been completely exposed. The Bai family is in complete chaos.]

[Don't come back right now. I'll handle things at the company for you. The media have already tried to break in for interviews several times.]

He rarely appeared in public with her, and he even turned down many gatherings that required couples to attend, all to protect Bai Xiaoruo and keep her out of the spotlight. But now...

Sure enough, what I feared happened.

Besides a few of their friends, the Bai family also knew.

Has the Bai family decided to fight to the death with the Xian family, even at the cost of exposing Bai Xiaoruo?

That's impossible. What good would it do them to expose her? She's not their precious darling, but their shameful second daughter, enough to make them lose face. Why would they choose to expose her voluntarily?

If it's not a member of the Bai family, then who could it be?

Who else could harbor such deep hatred towards Bai Xiaoruo?

Bai Xiaoruo is currently pregnant. If she is forcibly exposed to the media's hype, it will definitely frighten her and the baby. Who will benefit the most in the end?

"I understand. What about the nursing home? Have you found anything?"

Gu Yao was silent for a few seconds on the other end of the phone. "[Mingyu, you'd better be prepared for what I'm about to say, especially... about your sister-in-law. She's pregnant right now, so it's best not to let her know.]"

"What exactly happened?"

[That nursing home was on the news this morning. It was hit by a rare and massive fire that burned for a full day and night before being discovered and reported. When firefighters entered, the place was almost completely destroyed; the doors and windows were locked beforehand, and everyone inside... perished.]
